Chapter 13

I am back in Abnegation, sitting in my room on my bed, drawing in my notebook. I couldn't stop thinking about Four and I wanted to see him again. I didn't notice that I was drawing a sketch of Four until I look down at my notebook to see that I drew a picture of Four's face. I continue to stare at the drawing and I'm amazed that I was able to draw his face without making any errors or flaws even though I wasn't paying attention. After staring at my drawing, an idea pops into my head and I get off my bed. I walk over to my drawers and open one of them, taking out some colored pencils. I take out a dark blue pencil then walk back over to my bed and start coloring in Four's eyes. After I'm done, I stare at the drawing, seeing the eyes pop out against the rest of the drawing. I smile at my work then rip the drawing out of my notebook. Usually, I keep all of my drawings in there but if something is important to me, I rip it out and place it in a special folder, where I put all of my other drawings that I don't want people to see. Right after I place the drawing in my folder and put it back in the drawer, a knock sounds at my door and I answer, "Come in." The door opens and Mom walks in, a smile on her face. "Hello, Beatrice. How are you?"

"I'm fine. Is there something you need?"

"A package came in for you from Four," answers Mom.

My eyes widen, wondering what he got me. I walk towards Mom and take the package from her. I tear it open and see a small rectangular box. I open the box to see a flower design bracelet with single cut diamonds. It was very simple but also extravagant. When I pick up the bracelet, I see a note underneath it. I pick it up and silently read it to myself.

I saw this bracelet when I was in the Pit with Zeke and the others. I thought of you when I saw this so I decided to get it. I hope you like it and I would love to hear from you again.

Sincerely,

Four.

I smile; I couldn't believe Four would get me something so nice and expensive as this.

"Do you want me to put it on for you?" Mom asks.

"Sure." Mom takes the bracelet from my hands and clasps it around my left wrist. I look at the bracelet and smile, it went well with my outfit. I am wearing a knee-length, light purple dress with flower patterns all over it. Purple flats with sparkles on the toes complements my dress.

"That Four is such a gentleman," states Mom. "Are you thinking about taking him as your husband?"

"I think so. He is so much kinder than all of the other men I met but I'm not sure."

"What are you not sure about?"

"Well…I don't know if Four is one of those men that just wants to marry me because I'm a princess. I've met those kind of men before and they only wanted me so they could be royalty."

Mom walks up to me and lays a comforting hand on my shoulder. "I know that Four isn't one of those men. When he brought you to his house after you were attacked, Four looked after you and made sure you weren't hurt or anything. He checked on you every hour to make sure you were ok and that you were resting properly. I'm pretty sure Four wouldn't be that way to you and that he'll respect you for who you are."

I smile. "Thanks, Mom."

"You're welcome. Now, you should write Four a letter."

"Ok." Mom leaves my room and I walk over to my desk. I take out a piece of paper and I start writing.

Hi Four,

Thank you for the bracelet. It's really pretty and I can't believe you would buy this for me. This must have cost you a fortune. I don't know how to repay you for this. I really enjoyed our date yesterday and I know I already told you this but I just wanted to tell you again. I hope we can meet again sometime to go out again. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Tris.

I fold the note up then grab an envelope from the corner of my desk and place the letter in it, sealing it up. I walk out of my room and downstairs to the living room. I see Mom reading a book so I lightly knock on the wall to get her attention. She looks up at me and nods, telling me that she's listening. "I'm going to the post office to mail my letter."

"Ok, be careful, honey."

I nod then walk out of the living room. I walk out of the palace and head towards the post office. Each of the kingdoms has a post office in the middle of the kingdoms but these post offices have pipes that run underground to the other kingdoms. They deliver any packages/letters in about ten minutes so the person will get their mail the day that it is mailed out.

On the way, I'm greeted by other Abnegation citizens and they give me some form of hello. I greet them back and continue my way to the post office. Once I get there, I walk in and stand in front of the counter, waiting for someone to come and take my letter. A women in her late thirties with black hair pulled back in a bun and brown eyes walks towards the counter. She is wearing a purple blouse with a purple work skirt. She smiles at me before saying, "Hello, your highness. How may I help you?"

"I want to mail this letter to the kingdom of Dauntless."

"Ok, that'll be twenty-five cents."

Depending on how big the piece of mail is determines what the cost of the mailing is. It's nothing expensive; it's usually between ten cents to five dollars. I take out a quarter and hand it to the woman. She places it in the cash register then walks over to a black pipe. The woman places it under the pipe and the letter is sucked into the pipe. "Ok, your letter has been sent. Do you need anything else?"

"No, that's it. Thank you."

"Have a nice day, your highness."

I walk out of the post office and head back to the palace.

Three days have passed since I mailed my letter to Four and I haven't heard anything from him yet. I'm worried that he doesn't want to hang out with me or anything but I keep on hoping that I'll hear something from him.

It is an early morning and I am in Cara's room, talking to her about boys and such. A knock sounds at the door and Cara says, "Come in." The door opens and Susan walks in. "I don't mean to intrude, but there is someone here for you, Princess Beatrice," she says.

"Really? Who?"

"A young man from Dauntless. He says his name is Four."

My heart starts to race and I could feel butterflies in my stomach. He came to see me?

"Go to your man, Tris," Cara says, giving me a slight shove.

I blush, getting up from her bed. I follow Susan out of the room and into the living room, where Four is talking with my parents. Once Four sees me, he smiles at me and I smile back. "It's nice to see you again, Tris," says Four.

"You as well. May I ask why you are here?"

"You said you wanted to see me again so I came here. I'm glad you like the bracelet."

"Yes, it's very beautiful. I hope I can pay you back somehow."

Four shakes his head. "No need, it's a gift from me to you."

"So, what do you plan to do today?" Mom asks.

"Whatever your daughter wants to do," answers Four.

"I can show you around Abnegation," I suggest.

"Sure." Four gets up from the couch and walks over to me.

"Take care of my daughter while you are out," Dad says, glancing at Four.

"I will, sir." Four holds his arm out for me and I take it, smiling at him. We walk out of the house and into the heart of Abnegation. I show Four the markets and the different items that the people sell. I take him to one of my favorite restaurants for lunch that serves only breakfast. I love their scrambled eggs for they make it with chess and it came with triangle-shaped hash browns. I would eat my eggs with those hash browns and it tastes amazing. I convince Four to try this concoction and he does, which he says that it tasted really good. We spend a few more hours in the markets before heading back to the palace. We are talking about random things when Four suddenly stiffens, staring straight ahead of him.

"Four, what's wrong?" I ask. I look ahead of me and see Marcus Eaton, one of the council members in Abnegation. Marcus is in his late forties with graying black hair and dark eyes. He is wearing a purple dress shirt with dress pants and shoes. He slightly bows to me. "Good evening, your highness. How is your day going?"

"It is well, Marcus. How is your day?"

"Fine." Marcus turns to Four and his eyes narrow. "Hello, young lad. What is your name?"

"It's Four," spits Four.

"That's an interesting name. Why would someone name their child Four?"

Four doesn't say anything but instead keeps on glaring at Marcus. I glance back and forth between the two. I wonder if something bad happened between the two of them. I then notice that Four is shaking and I know that I have to end my conversation with Marcus and get Four away from him. "Do you need anything, Marcus?" I ask politely.

Marcus turns to me and a smile appears on his face. "I just wanted to talk with you to see how you are doing. I was also wondering if I can talk to Four alone."

I hear Four take in a breath through his teeth and I grab his hand, giving it a light squeeze. "Actually, we need to have back to the palace. My parents are expecting us for dinner and I don't want to keep them waiting."

"I see. Well, I don't want to keep you waiting. Have a good rest of your day, your highness. Four." Marcus walks away and Four lets out a breath when Marcus is gone. I turn to Four, my eyes showing concern. "Did something happen between you and Marcus?" I ask.

Four looks down at me, giving me a smile. "It's nothing."

"Four-"

"I'll tell you someday but not today, I promise."

I want to press on further but I decide not to. I just give him a slight nod, telling him that I understand. "Just so you know, I'm here for you if you need anything." I stand on my tiptoes and kiss him on the cheek. He smiles at me before interlocking his fingers with mine. We continue our way to the palace and I almost forget about our confrontation with Marcus.
