The next morning, I wake up and stretch my arms out, satisfied when I hear a soft crack. The events from last play in my mind and a smile forms across my face. Fo-Tobias and I kissed and it was the best first kiss ever. I get up from my bed, making my way over to my closet. I open it then take out a plain, knee-length purple dress and change into it. I slip on a pair of light purple flats then brush the tangles out of my hair. I French braid my hair then walk out of my room and downstairs in the dining room. I see Mom and Dad already there but Caleb and Cara are not here yet.
"Good morning, Beatrice," greets Dad.
"Hi, Dad. How did you and Mom sleep?" I ask.
"We slept well, dear," Mom answers. "And you?"
Wonderful, I thought. "Good." My dreams were mostly full of Tobias and I getting married and having kids.
Caleb and Cara come down then and I notice Caleb's hair is slightly ruffled and Cara is straightening her shirt. "Sorry we're late," apologizes Cara.
"It's all right," reassures Dad. "Take a seat; breakfast will be served soon."
They sit down and I make eye contact with Caleb, wriggling my eyebrows at him. Caleb narrows his eyes at me then shakes his head, a small smile forming on his lips.
Susan then comes out and places the food on the table. She then walks over to Dad and whispers something in his ear, handing him an envelope. Dad takes the envelope and thanks Susan, who nods and walks back into the kitchen. As I place some scrambled eggs on my plate, I watch Dad out of the corner of my eye open the envelope and read the contents. After a few minutes, Dad shakes his head, whispering, "I can't believe her."
"What's wrong, dear?" Mom gently asks, placing a hand on Dad's.
"Remember when Beatrice was attacked by those men?" Mom nods. "They found the culprits but Jeanine is sticking up for them, saying that they were doing the right thing. She claims that if Beatrice marries a council member, society will collapse and there will be an outbreak. I have a feeling that Jeanine was behind the attack on our daughter; that bitch."
"Sorry, but I don't trust that woman. Ever since she became a council member, Jeanine thinks that the kingdoms will fail and that we should all be ruled by one power instead of five. I hope she doesn't try to start anything."
"Is Jeanine that bad?" Caleb asks.
"Yes," answers Cara. "She kept trying to steal the power from my parents."
"Who were my attackers?" I ask. I never learned who my attackers were and I actually forgot about it.
"They were the two men that you didn't get along with," Mom answers.
"Peter and Eric?"
She nods. I kind of figured that Peter was one of the men, for he was the only one I knew that called me Stiff. I don't know whether I should be shocked or not from finding out that Eric was the other guy who attacked me. "Who was the other guy that attacked you and Hana?"
"Someone named Edgar, he was an accomplice of Eric."
I nod, tuning out the rest of the conversation between Dad and Mom. It wasn't until they were talking about Dauntless when I remember the question I need to ask. "Mom, Dad?" They stop talking and turn to me. "Does the name Tobias sound familiar to you?"
They ponder over my question before Dad answers, "I believe that was the name of the prince of Dauntless."
My eyes widen at Dad's answer. That has to be a coincidence, there is no way that Four is the lost prince of Dauntless.
"Why do you ask, Beatrice?" Mom asks.
I shake my head. "No reason, I just wanted to know."
"Is there something on your mind?"
"It's Four, isn't it?" asks Cara, a knowing smile on her face.
I smile, nodding my head.
"I'm guessing you have chosen a husband then?" Dad asks.
"I think so."
Mom claps her hands together, a smile spreading on her face and tears forming in her eyes. "I'm so happy for you, sweetie."
"Is that ok if I can go over to Dauntless and see him?"
"Sure, you can take the carriage if you want."
I nod then finish eating my breakfast. I get up from my seat, after excusing myself, and start walking towards the door. "By the way, I'm spending a night in Dauntless." I leave before my parents could say anything else.
I arrive in Dauntless a few hours later and make my way towards Tobias' house. I have a backpack with clothes for the next day and other necessities. I also brought my drawing book so I could show Tobias my drawings and maybe we could come up with an idea together. I soon find myself in front of Tobias' house and knock on the door. The door opens and Bud answers it, his eyes widening when he sees me. "Princess Beatrice, what are you doing here?"
"I know I came unannounced but I wanted to see Four," I answer.
"Sure, please come in." Bud steps inside and I make my way into the house. "Four, the princess is here for you!" Bud screams at the top of his lungs, making me cringe from the loudness of his voice. "Sorry about that; he'll be down in a minute." Bud goes into another room and right when he does, Tobias comes down the stairs. "Tris?"
I smile. "Hey, how are you?"
"I'm good though I'm surprised you're here."
"Well, I wanted to see my favorite guy, and the good thing about this is that I'm spending the night as well."
He smirks. "Really? And where are you planning on staying?"
"I was hoping that my favorite guy would let me crash at his place for the night."
"I don't know, I would have to check my schedule."
I raise an eyebrow at him.
"I'm just kidding. You can spend the night here. So, what do you want to do then?"
"I want to learn more about Dauntless and what the people do?"
"Fun or training wise?"
"Ok, but you might want to put something else on."
"Good thing I came prepared." I take off my dress to reveal the clothes I have hidden underneath. I bend over to roll down my pant legs then replace my flats with boots. I stand up straight, fixing my black tank, before letting my hair out of my braid and putting it into a pony tail.
"How did you get those clothes?" Tobias asks.
"I may or may not have gone into the attic of the palace, look through my mom's Dauntless clothing, and borrow some articles of clothing."
Tobias shakes his head at me. "I don't know how you are Abnegation but either way, you are acting like a Dauntless."
"Is this my first step in training?"
"So what's next?"
"Well, learning how to shoot a gun, throw knives, jumping on and off a train, learning to fight-"
"Wait, what did you say?"
"Learning to fight."
"Jumping on and off a train?"
"Yes that. People in Dauntless actually do that?!"
Tobias nods. "How do you think we travel from kingdom to kingdom?"
"I thought all kingdoms had a car or carriage."
"Nope, we travel by train. When we travel to the kingdoms, the tracks are outside of the kingdoms so the noise doesn't disturb the people. However, in Dauntless, there are tracks everywhere that leads to certain parts in the city. There are also two different trains: one for the city and one for the kingdoms."
I nod along, getting confused from his explanation.
"You look confused."
He chuckles. "It's not that hard. Now, let's head over to the training building. I'll show you how to throw knives and shoot guns."
"What about the train and fighting?"
"Fighting we'll do later and the train will be last. If you don't know how to jump on and off a train, then you'll get seriously hurt or worse." As we walk out of the door, Tobias leans in and whispers, "And I don't want to see you get hurt." I blush as his breath tickles my ear. "I hope you haven't forgotten about last night."
I look at him and whisper back, "How could I, Tobias?"
He smiles then leans down and kisses me on the lips. I kiss him back, wrapping my arms around his neck. It wasn't until a few moments later that I realize we are outside. Even though I told my parents that I want Tobias as my husband, I want to announce it publically and not have someone catching us kissing like this. I break away from the kiss, breathing heavily, and say, "Someone might see us."
"I don't care," is all Tobias says before pulling me closer to him and kissing me again. I melt into the kiss again then throw caution to the wind. After a few good minutes of kissing, we break apart then walk hand in hand to the training building.
