Love or Tradition

Chapter 23

When the door to the cell opens, I look up to see Tobias, Zeke, and Uriah standing there, their guns pointed at Marcus. A smile appears on my face when I see them, but the smile disappears when I feel the scissors press against my throat. "Let her go, Marcus," orders Tobias.

"That's not going to happen, boy," spits Marcus. "You drop the gun or I'll slit your fiancé's throat." I can see Tobias start to lower his gun and that he is trying to figure out what to do. Then, I notice that Marcus' foot is sticking out farther than the rest of his body. I gesture to his foot to Tobias and he nods, getting my message. He looks at Uriah, who is closer to Marcus, and nods his head towards the foot. Uriah nods in confirmation then shoots Marcus' foot. Marcus howls in pain then I throw my head back, hitting Marcus in the face and making him stumble back. Zeke charges at Marcus, knocking him to the ground and kicking the scissors away from them. I feel myself relax as Tobias and Uriah run over to me, cutting the ropes from my wrists and ankles. Tobias lifts me up from the chair, cradling me to his chest. "You're safe now, Tris," Tobias says to me, placing a kiss on my forehead. I place my head in the crock of his neck and close my eyes, breathing in his scent. As Tobias walks out of the place, I close my eyes and I'm lured to sleep.

The next time I wake up, I find myself in a hospital room with the bright lights shining in the room, making my eyes hurt from the harsh light. I try to move my hand to cover my eyes only to find something holding it down. I look to my left to see Mom holding my hand, with her head on the bed. I gently squeeze her hand to tell her I'm awake, hoping that it will wake her up. Surprisingly, Mom slowly opens her eyes and they widen when she sees that I'm awake. She lifts her head off the bed then wraps her arms around me. "I'm so happy that you're awake," Mom mumbles into my ear then kisses my head. "I was so worried about you."

"How long have I been out?" I ask her.

"You've been missing for about a week and you were asleep for two days. It was stressful for all of us, especially Four; he hasn't left you since."

"Where is he?"

"In the cafeteria. We've convinced him to get something to eat since he hasn't eaten anything those two days. I laid my head down so I could get comfortable but I must have fallen asleep. Were you up long?"

"No, I just woke up. Is Dad and Caleb here as well?"

"Yup, along with Cara, Prince Will, Princess Christina, and your friends from Dauntless. They are all worried about you, sweetheart."

A smile appears on my face knowing that I have family and friends that care about me. I was worried that they wouldn't find me but I never gave up hope, even when Marcus told me they wouldn't come. Speaking of which. "What happened to Jeanine and Marcus?"

"They were taken into Candor and are awaiting their trail. They will put them on truth serum to see what they have done and what their punishment should be."

"They should be locked up forever, those monsters."

"Mom, you don't know what they were planning. Jeanine told me her plan and it was horrible. Did you know that she was the one behind the death of King Amar and Queen Evelyn?"

Mom widens her eyes. "No, I didn't."

"Yeah, and Marcus went in on it to because Evelyn divorced him then married Amar and had a son with him."

"Wait a minute, how could Amar be Four's father? He looks nothing like him."

I get confused by this. "Does that mean Evelyn was pregnant with Four when she got divorced with Marcus?"

I feel so sorry for Tobias because that would suck if Marcus was his father. "Do you want me to go and get Four?"

I nod then Mom kisses my forehead before leaving the room. A few minutes pass before Tobias comes in, with a smile on his face. He walks over and takes my mother's place, gently taking my hand in his. "How are you feeling?"

"Kind of sore, but I think I'll be ok. How long will I be here?"

"The doctors didn't find anything serious in your body so I think you'll be in here for about a day or two then they'll let you go."

I groan, leaning my head back against the pillow. Tobias chuckles at me and I glare at him. "Hey, I hate being in hospitals. The beds are so uncomfortable and the lights are too bright for me."

"Would it be better if I lay down next to you?"

I think about if before nodding my head. I move over and Tobias lays down next to me, wrapping his arms around me. I put my head on his chest, listening to his heart beat. "How bad am I?"

"Some cuts and bruises, nothing too serious for stitches, you're dehydrated and malnourished, and have a small concussion."

I nod then a knock sounds at the door. "Come in," I say.

The door opens and Christina pops her head in. "Hey, I was wondering if you wanted some company."

"Sure, come in." Christina comes in as well as the rest of my friends. "Hey guys," I greet.

"How are you doing, Tris?" Marlene asks.

"A little sore and tired but I'll be ok."

"What happened to you over there?" Uriah asks.

I freeze at this, thinking of what Jeanine and Marcus did to me in that cell. Zeke suddenly slaps Uriah upside the head. "She's not ready to talk about it yet you idiot."

"Guys, don't argue," orders Shauna. "Tris needs her rest and not give her this stress."

"All right," Zeke says, putting his hands up in surrender.

"Pansycake," Uriah mutters under his breath.

"What did you say?!"

Zeke and Uriah hang their heads, making me chuckle. "I missed this."

"Really?" Lynn asks, surprised. "I would do anything to get away from these two and their bickering."

"I would too but when you are locked in a room with no one to talk to, it's a little depressing having no one make you laugh or comfortable."

"May I ask how you got kidnapped?" asks Will.

"Actually, when I was heading towards Abnegation, I heard a branch snap and I did look around but saw no one. I figured that I was imagining things and continued walking until I felt something hit the back of my head. The next thing I knew, I awoke in the cell with Marcus and Jeanine."

"Why would they do that though?" Zeke asks.

"Jeanine had this plan to get rid of the kingdoms and put a new system in for she thinks the kingdoms will fail. That's actually why Four's parents were attacked that day." I turn to Tobias with a sorrowful look. "Jeanine and Marcus were the one that came up with the idea to kill your parents. They were ones that also kidnapped you and gave you memory serum." I see Tobias tense up and I rub my hand up and down his arm, trying to sooth him. "I'm sorry."

"It's all right," he says. "They will pay for that and hopefully be sentenced to life in prison."

I snuggle closer to him, feeling myself relax and my eyes get heavy. Tobias notices this then turns to the others. "I think she needs some more rest."

"All right, we'll leave to let you rest," Christina says, then walks over to me. She gives me a short hug. "I'm glad you're ok."

"Thanks," I say to her. Christina smiles then leaves the room with the others, leaving Tobias and I in a comfortable silence. "Will you stay with me?" I ask him.

"Of course." He gives me a short kiss on the lips. "I love you, Tris."

"I love you too." I close my eyes, falling into a peaceful slumber.
