Fate's Evil Curse

Kanade stopped when she realized that the picture led her outside of the Kuran estate. She swallowed her pride and kept moving as she approached the gate. She stared at the front doors, which had suddenly opened as she approached. Yuki peeked her head out to meet her gaze.

"Yuki!" Kanade waved her hand to get the girls attention and Yuki gave her a sad smile before nodding at her to give her permission to come in. Kanade jumped over the gates, walked up to her, and tackled the small girl into an embrace. "Is there something wrong?"

Her usual cheerfulness was absent and instead there was sadness inside of her. Yuki shook her head, grabbed Kanade's hand, and led her into the living room.

They sat down and Kanade watched in confusion as the pureblood stared at her hands with a pained look in her eyes.

"I know about your past with Kaname." Yuki blurted out.

Kanade's eyes widened as she heard her words.

"I see..." She trailed off. "Yuki..." She searched for the right words, but came up with nothing.

"I don't really know how to think of him right now, but I... if-- if you love him then maybe it would be better..."

"Yuki, the last thing I want is for you to make decisions about my happiness for me. I--I'm with someone as well."

She cursed herself for saying it. The picture from earlier floated into her line of sight; behind Yuki.

"With... Zero?" Yuki asked as she gripped onto her dress and her heart began to slowly drop, as she already knew the answer.

After their fight earlier that day, Kanade didn’t really know if they were in any way together. Everything was simply too confusing for her to put a label on it.

'Maybe it's better to make her think it though... so she can get over him.'

"We both have broken hearts Yuki… and we can't just wait around anymore hoping that the ones who broke them will jump back into our arms. We care for each other and want to mend each other's pain." Yuki nodded and the picture drew closer to the blonde girl. Kanade glared at it and it stopped, hovering inches away from her arm.

"I'm sorry... I'm really happy for you." Yuki choked out as she felt her throat tighten, too distracted by the sudden news to notice the picture.

"As am I." A deep voice said from the doorway. Kanade whipped her head back to see Kaname standing there with that pained look in his eyes he seemed to always have when he saw her.

Within that second the picture floated into Kanade's hand and she suddenly passed out.

Kanade sat up from floor and looked around in confusion. The atmosphere of the castle had suddenly changed and she began to hear voices in the other room. She pushed herself up and followed the voices to find her mother, her father, Noda, and Rido all gathered around Yuki’s parents. Kanade only then realized that she was seeing another memory of the past. Juri sat in a rocking chair, holding a newborn child in her arms. Haruka stood over her, smiling at his new son while Yuri sat next to Juri with the twins behind her and Rido stood in the doorway.

"Good boy, good boy, Kaname." Juri said. Kanade leaned over her from behind to get a better look. "He is such a good boy isn't he? AH! No way, he made such a weird face just now! It's a waste of his good looks."

Yuri laughed. "He did."

"How funny isn't it?" Juri chuckled. "Do you want to hold him?" She asked. The blonde woman nodded, grinning from ear to ear as she carefully took the child from her best friend's arms. She stared down at him, filled with joy.

"Maybe it is a good thing after all, to give birth to a new life, with all the hidden promises and unknown factors that come with it." Rido said as he watched them.

"I suppose so." Yuri said as she stared down at the child in her arms. She didn't really know how to feel about having a child, but now that she saw Juri with her beautiful, new son she loved the idea.

"Would you like to hold him in your arms? Huh, 'uncle' Rido?" Juri chuckled and nodded at Yuri to hand him over to her brother. Rido walked over to the pureblood’s side and he picked up the newborn with a smile plastered on his face. The baby suddenly wet himself and some of it dripped onto the floor. "Ah! I'm so sorry! I though it would still be fine but…"

He smiled down at the child, "It's because you are bad at changing diapers. I'm very good at it, because I have experience taking care of my brother and little sister."

Yuri started to become a little confused as she noticed his feelings begin to unfold in front of her. She was one of the few Takanashi's who felt other people's emotions while most others can see and touch them and something about his feelings didn't seem right. He was suddenly devious and vengeful. She stared at him in confusion as he walked off.

"Let me see…. I'll go and get you all cleaned up, Kaname, and I'll also go get changed out of my shirt, which you got all wet."

Haruka followed after him saying he would take care of it. When he got out into the hallway he saw that his brother had disappeared. Yuri began to become alarmed as his emotions floated away. She stood up and walked out of the room in search for him. The rest stared after them in confusion. Kanade quickly followed after her mother, the ominous air beginning to frighten her.

Yuri found herself in the basement in front of a set of mysterious double doors. She could feel Rido's emotions radiating from behind. Something was happening. There was someone else in there and it wasn't the child. Yuri swallowed her fear and pushed one of the doors open to find Rido being held by the neck by a disgusting creature. Kanade jumped back with fright. Yuri wanted to scream as she saw the bloody cloth holding the dead child in Rido's arms, she was so shocked by the scene in front of her she felt as if she was frozen.

Rido laughed and waved his finger in the creature’s face, "Don't go forgetting who it was that opened that lid of the coffin and brought your filthy carcass back to life, it was me!" Yuri gasped at the man's words. "I'm your owner now so be obedient while I devour your li--"

The creature threw Rido down to the ground with his blood smothered on his face. He looked back at the frightened girl who stared at them with her jaw dropped.

"Kanade?" He whispered with a hoarse voice as he stared at her in confusion, he felt as if he was seeing a ghost of the one he loved and lost.

“Huh?” Kanade mumbled.

"N-n-no." Yuri stuttered.

He took in her features and realized that she was simply a decedent.

Rido started to laugh uncontrollably, "It would have been better for you to have obediently let me devour you! The baby's life and my blood are nowhere near enough for your body to be fully restored to life. What are you going to do? Will you devour the members of your lover's kin or your own as sacrifices? The hunger that accumulated for thousands and thousands of years must be about to slam into you soon. I can't even wrap my mind around how harsh that must be."

Kanade looked around the room to see a second coffin. She cocked her head to the side in confusion and began to move forward, past her mother, slowly approaching the creature with curiosity. She knew that he was no threat to her, for he was nothing but a memory. She stopped at the edge of the coffin and stared up at him.

Rido went on laughing in the background as Kaname analyzed his surroundings. A dead child, a decedent of the woman he loved, and his kin outside of the doors probably searching for their missing son. He more than anything wanted to die, but the hunger was starting to envelop him. He came to the conclusion that there was only one solution. He reverted himself back into an infant as he did 8,000 years ago and left his fate into the hands of his kin.

Kanade watched in amazement as she realized the truth of how Kaname came to be known as Yuki’s brother.

Haruka opened the door to see Yuri on her hands and knees, panting furiously. She was overcome with all of the ancestor’s heavy emotions, overwhelming her. Haruka dropped to her side and pulled the trembling woman into his arms as he examined his surroundings. He felt his heart drop as he noticed the baby blanket ripped and covered in blood.

He kissed the top of the frightened woman's head, whom he thought of as a dear sister. He set her down and walked over to the blanket. Yuri could feel his sadness wash over her as he picked it up and sighed. He looked over and his eyes widened as he quickly picked up the child lying on the floor next to his unconscious brother. He embraced the infant out of relief and turned back to see Juri standing he doorway in confusion as the twins held their trembling sister.

Kanade leaned over the coffin and stared down in disbelief at what she had found. Haruka glanced over, reached into the coffin and picked up a drawing of a woman dating back to 10,000 years ago. Kanade took a step back as she saw her name written on the back of the paper.

The memory began to fade and all Kanade could see was the drawing. It was the same as the one she found in the box of pictures. She stared at it as it hovered menacingly over her. Kanade suddenly woke up screaming.

"Shhh." A warm hand stroked her hair. Kanade looked up to meet eyes with Kaname sitting beside her. She jerked back and scrambled to the other side of the bed in fear.

"What's the matter?" He asked.

"…Have…have you been lying to me…? How… old are you? Why did you have a drawing of my ancestor in your coffin?" She exclaimed. "Are you even my Kaname? Do you just have the same face and name as the man I fell in love with and just find my suffering amusing?"

"How did you know about the drawing?"

"I saw a memory… I saw you being awakened from your sleep after I died and… Did you know her? They said she disappeared after giving birth and died in the war…”

"Kanade…" He stood up, about to walk over to the other side of the bed to comfort her.

"Don't say my name!" She snapped. He stopped in place. She hated the feeling she got whenever he said it, the feeling of hope.

She looked up at him, realizing that they were alone. It had been the first time since they parted that day one year ago… the day where she let him break her heart. Suddenly, she felt her sadness that she was keeping bottled up inside of her since the moment he gave her the memories of her past life fall onto her light a heavy weight. She felt her tears begin to fall and he throat begin to tighten as she took in his radiant features.

“I don’t understand… I don’t understand anything these days. 11 years I loved you… and when I came back I thought maybe you kept me at a distance because of the thing I was born as… but now I was able to change the treaty and… you still cling to her… You weren’t like this back then... you’re so different… was this all just a lie? Are you really him?"

"I’m sorry… I’m not the same person you knew all those years ago. I deceived you… I pulled you into this game of chess, in hope to mend a wound that could never be sealed.”

"Even if you lied… even if you aren’t him… I'm trying to be happy, wearing a smile; but it's too painful inside.” She crawled over to the other side of the bed and held herself up by her knees so that they were the same height. He stood a few inches away… watching her carefully. “…Everywhere I go I see your face and I realize how much I need you… Do you feel the same? Are tired of the lying and deceit?”

Despite all the lies he had told her she could feel his emotions with clarity, he loved her, no matter whom he was.

"I am tainted… my existence is nothing but contradiction.” Kaname said, trying to hold back his urge to wrap his arms around her. “The best thing to do is to cast me aside. You won't need me anymore once you drink my blood, then you can go back to Zero and live happily with him.”

"How am I supposed to just let you go like you were just some toy?” She got down from the bed and stood in front of him. “You are the one who made me feel this way for you. You are the one who gave me my memories of my past life. You must take responsibility.”

"If you knew her then that must mean you’re one of them right? An ancestor? I wonder if I am the last to know.” She let out a dark chuckle. “… Did you…” She held her head downcast as she stared down at her feet. “Did you love her? My ancestor?” She glanced up at him through her bangs and he slightly nodded. “Is that why you care for me? Because I look like her?"

He let out a sigh and kissed the top of her head.

"It's better for you to just stay in the dark for now." He walked over to the door.

“Hatori is reincarnated…” She said. He stopped for a moment and stared at the door as he processed the information. He left the room without another word, leaving her in utter confusion.

"Where's Kaname?" A small voice asked. Kanade looked over to see her younger self with red eyes, clutching a teddy bear she had in her past life.

"Shut up." She growled at the little girl, making her cry. Suddenly she heard the door lock. Kanade ran towards the door she jiggled the doorknob, but it wouldn’t open. She tried to use her powers on it, but the door was magically sealed. She started banging her fists against it, still feeling his presence leaning against it on the other side. "Why do you do this to me? Why won’t you just tell me the truth? All you do is lie and lie and I can't take it anymore!" She screamed through the door. "I can't take not knowing.”

"Do not go back to that hunter. He cannot protect you." He said and then he was gone.

"Kaname!” She screamed as she pounded on the door.

"Do not open that door Yuki." Kaname told the pureblood who stood in the hallway, watching him in confusion.

Yuki turned towards the door with Kanade screaming on the other side.

"What are you doing Kaname? Let her out!" Yuki charged towards the door, but Kaname grabbed her arm.

"Kanade is being hunted. If you let her out, she will die."
