Fez’s Backstory

Anna Leigh Robbins and Margaret Saar

With the salty Atlantic Ocean air blowing in his face, Fez sipped his cachaca sitting in the sand as if he was glued to the ground. He is surrounded by his family while taking in the warm sun’s heat like a moth to a bright light. From his mother and father all the way to his second cousins, Fez has many loud family members. He had always felt like the outcast among them because he was the best and only dancer in Brazil. Little music was played which gave Fez no opportunities to express his secret talent. He lived each dreary day in the normal routine with no excitement or any change throughout the week. Questioning his cousin Carlos, Fez asked, “Do you ever get tired of everything being the same here? The people, the food, the routine?”

“Of course not! What else could you ask for; life here is perfect.” Carlos replied. His family saw nothing wrong with the average Brazil lifestyle and Fez couldn’t stand it anymore. One rainy day, along the Brazilian coast, a shipment from America was imported in a massive boat called the Vista Cruise. While his family was sprinting inside like swarm of wasps, Fez saw his opportunity. He had to make his decision of whether to stay or go. He rapidly snuck around the oblivious guard and went down to the bottom room of the ship. Thinking and worrying about his risky choice, Fez was filled with guilt and had begun to climb back up the ladder to reunite with his home. He took one step and was thrown to the ground by the force of the moving ship. It was too late and the boat had already started moving. Fez heard footsteps along the stairs he took to get down coming close to the ladder. He jumped up and hid like his life depended on it. The sailor, Captain Red, with a grimace on his face, sniffed the salty air, “Is anyone in here?” he yelled. Nothing but silence filled the room. Fez was holding his breath behind the trunk with sweat beading down his face. Ignoring what he thought he had heard, Red made his way back up the ladder.. The boat continued to sway back and forth as the foreigner drifted off to sleep.

A pelican stood on the tip of the boat, making all the noise he wanted to wake up everyone. Fez jolted up while hitting his head in the process. Confused by his surroundings, he quickly remembered his daring decision from a couple of days before. The boat suddenly stopped as if it hit something. Fez poked his head up to the top of the ladder and recognized his location from a book he read on Florida. He watched the ships crew begin to unload boxes to the shore; he took this time to sneak around to the deck and watch from a distance. Fez saw a huge truck that said ‘Sweet Home Wisconsin’. He quickly ran down the ramp and hid behind a box in the back of the truck. Red jumped in the driver’s seat and started the car. Fez had a long journey ahead.
