The Black Friday Games

Chapter 1

Although it was a windy day, there were hordes of people outside of Target. The day was November 27 in the year 2086. There were twenty-four people from twelve random states. The rules were very strict, which states that a male and female from each state will be picked. These contestants were expected to fight it out for the best deal, even if it cost them their life.

A girl named Katniss Everdeen with hair as long and brown as a tree’s branches, and Peeta Mellark with dirty blonde hair were chosen from Alabama, both of whom will play an important role in this story. Other contestants include, Rue and Thresh from Ohio, Cato and Clove from California as well as Glimmer and Marvel from New York. The others are unimportant. The contestants were armed with weapons by Haymitch. He had long, dirty blonde hair and was an alcoholic. Another man named Cinna was in charge of design and debut of the contestants. The third part of the team is Effie Trinket, who was in charge of telling the contestants what to say to earn the favor of those watching. Everyone is controlled by the government like a captain is in control of a ship, except this captain is cruel and unforgiving.

“I’m not sure about this Haymitch”, Katniss said.

“Don’t worry you will be fine, all you have to do is look like you know what you’re doing”, responded Haymitch.

“I agree with Katniss, the games are just like being tortured”, Peeta added in, “I mean, we don’t know what we’re doing.”

“Well neither does anyone else. You are in the same boat, just like everyone else”, Haymitch said, “now let’s pick your armorment because you have some tough competition and you will need all the help you can get and all the other contestants have said the same thing, ‘I don’t know how to use these’, “ Well that is why you are here, to find your strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage. First, I must ask, what do you think you would be good at? Or do you think you wouldn’t be good with anything”.

“I am pretty good with a bow”, Katniss said, “I haven’t had much training but I know how to shoot it”.

“Alright let’s see what you got”, responded Haymitch.

Katniss pulled out an arrow quickly and shot the bow at a target a hundred yards out. The arrow hit its mark more than well.

“Beginners luck”, Haymitch smirked, “try it again”.

Katniss shot again at the same target and the arrow yet again hit its mark but split the previous arrow in two.

“Well missy, looks like you have your weapon of choice. Target shooting is your strength.”

Archery was a breeze for Katniss and that’s what she loved to do. Every morning she would go out and hunt for her family.

“Ok so we know what she’s good at, what about me?”, Peeta stuttered, “I still don’t know what I’m good at.”

“Well what do you do on a regular basis?”, Haymitch responded.

Peeta sighed and said, “I work around the bakery, I lift bags of wheat…”,

“That’s it! Your skill is strength! Like father Like son.” exclaimed Haymitch. “Here throw these.” Haymitch handed Peeta small, round, weighted, iron balls that if you can become accurate at throwing, can easily take out your target. Peeta, Haymitch and Katniss were all impressed with the accuracy of Peeta’s throws. Just like Katniss, Peeta didn’t miss his mark. Katniss excelled at archery, while Peeta excelled at shotput.

“Alright, let me give you the run-down on the arena.” Haymitch said, “Target is a big store. Target has a lot of obstacles. Target has a lot of products you can use to your advantage. If you make it to the final five, hordes of crazy buyers will come and try to steal the best deal trampling anything and anyone in their way. Your best chance to survive is join up with other people that you are comfortable with and defend the deal. Another option is to wait and watch, if you see that the deal is about to be over run, swoop in and help defend it. If you’re successful and still alive, eliminate the others outside you two, if you’re able to do that you win, if not, you better get the deal off the platform that came down and get out of there. You never know what will come and guard it if it’s not gone. If you do exactly what I just told you, you should get close to or actually win.”

They all agreed on a game plan and went to their respected rooms.

The next morning was game day. They were a firecracker ready to explode with emotions. Peeta was silent, Katniss was silent, and Haymitch was silent. At breakfast and lunch no one spoke a word except to pass this or pass that. It was now 3:00 in the afternoon and they awaited the call to gather. Suddenly there was a knock at the door, and a guard appeared. He told that it was time for Katniss and Peeta to leave. They got up, with hesitant faces and walked out the door. The guard led them down a long hall, which was barely lit, to two doors. The doors had the state they were from and they awaited for the store to open. Over an intercom, an announcer said,

“Welcome to the 175th annual Black Friday Games at Target. The doors will open in 3-2-1.”
