Adventure / Fantasy

The Beginning

She turned five moons old this morning, but it wasn’t a day to celebrate. The whole of ShadowClan had gotten Greencough. Her brothers Patchkit and Darkkit, her father Piketail, and her mother Morningflower had gotten sick. Echokit, Dewkit, and Duskkit had to stay in the leader’s, den while the clan was being treated.

“What’s going to happen to us?” The tiny gray kit with darker gray flecks questioned with fear in her eyes.

Echokit looked at her paws, “I don’t know Dewkit,” she sighed, “I don’t know.”

“Well maybe StarClan will make the sickness go away!” Duskkit, a large orange tom with darker paws said.

Dewkit perked up at the thought of that.

“Guys, I don’t think that StarClan works like that. They may be able to talk to Medicine Cats, and give leaders their nine lives, but I don’t believe they can help with a sickness.” The little black kit with eyes as dark as holly leaves said.

“I’m afraid not kits.” The deep voice said coming into the den. Berryleaf, the ShadowClan Medicine Cat, said gently.

“Berryleaf! What are you doing here?”

“Come outside little ones.” He swept the three kits over to him with his tail, and walked outside.

What lie outside was three bodies, one full grown and two tiny kits.
The three little kits stared at them in awe as they recognized their father and two brothers.

“No!” Echokit ran over there and buried her head into her father’s fur, while her brother and sister did the same, “Why did they have to die? Will Patch kit and Darkkit even be accepted into StarClan? They weren’t Warriors.” Tears started streaming down her fuzzy black face.

“Of course they will young kit. They were clan born, and StarClan will have a place for cats that were clan born.” Berryleaf nuzzled her.

The clan sat vigil for the kits dead littermates and father, and while Echokit’s brother and sister fell asleep, she got up, and went to the Medicine Den.

I will never let this happen to my clan again! Echokit vowed silently.

“Echokit,” The old Medicine Cat started, “what are you doing here?”

“I want to become your apprentice, and become a Medicine Cat!” Echokit stated, putting a tiny jet black paw down with confidence and courage.

“I will make sure Moonstar approves.” Berryleaf walked out of the den in pursuit of the clan’s leader.

She has to make me his apprentice! There’s no other cat who wants to do it! I will be the next ShadowClan Medicine Cat, and nobody will stop me!

Deleted User: This is a very clever story in the style of 19th century (and turn of the century) Gothic writing, very reminiscent of Stevenson's The Body Snatchers or even of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (less so of Frankenstein itself, since the author is more minimalist than Shelley's florid, Romantic rhetoric). ...
