Chapter 1

When she woke up the next day, for the smallest moment she forgot that he was gone. Zoe still felt the warmth from his body against hers and when she got up for her duties she felt his arms pulling her back into bed for just another minute. Life outside her bunker was painful. The crew meant well, but they all wanted to talk. She just wanted to work.

The dinosaurs were gone. Who would be damn fool enough to move Wash’s dinosaurs? Mal made for the kitchen.

“Which one of you bun tyen-shung duh ee-dway-ro took ’em? Huh? He ain’t even lukewarm yet and everybody wants to forget him?”

She had come through the door so silently that he didn’t notice her until Kaylee piped in with a quiet, “Captain...”

Zoe’s look was pointed. “No use livin’ in the past.”

Nothing else was said.

She hesitated. Why had she hesitated? Mal gripped her arm so tight that Zoe almost had trouble freeing herself.

“You so keen to die? What would Wash think of you, throwin’ yourself in front of Reavers? Life’s such a terrible burden that you’re so eager to be rid of it?” His tone had started at a dangerous whisper but now he was almost yelling.

“Hoo-tsuh! Woman, you make me so mad. Kao! Hoe-tze duh..Chiang-bao hoe...bhijoi!”

"Captain!"

"What?!"

"I'm pregnant!"

taosgw74: If this is the authors first attempt at writing, I'm floored. I was engrossed in the plot from the get go.

Matt_Darrow: I'm still reading but I like the gunslinger stuff. I detect a great use of creative momentum here. Keep up the inspiring work. I'll check back later after reading through the chapters a few times. Good job! Sincerely Matt_Darrow.

Mark Zhang: Hey! I've only finished the first chapter, but I thought that the overall flow of the story is excellent. That being said, there are particular aspects that could be improved, mainly regarding your descriptions of things in the story. Also, it's important to not introduce too many new items to t...

Jim Stafford: Alexander King's first book is a refreshing slant on speculative fiction, meshing satire and comedy with classic noir. The reference points (Starship Troopers, Neuromancer), and influences (Ellison, Gibson, Pratchett, Chandler) are clear, but work more as a road map than a template, at once self ...

Jean Tryon: As a beta, I found this story outstanding!! Plot, grammar, phraseology, etc Rachel gives us it all. She takes the story into the future from where due South ends. She is an exacting and thoughtful author.

Leah Brown: This was an amazing read! I was hooked from the very first chapter, holding my breadth to see what would happen next. The characters are rich and vibrant, and the world Danielle has created is fascinating. If you love YA, you MUST read this book. Such a smart, brilliant debut novel. I loved it!

teaandscones: Thank you for portraying the realities our soldiers face in such an accurate way but without over dramatizing or being overly preachy. As your Watson often said, most soldiers view their actions as nothing more than their duty.My brother serves, as have many members of my family, so I highly appr...

AkatsukiFreak31: When you requested I take a look at your novel in exchange for looking at mine, I had only expected to read the first chapter. because Sci-Fi is not my favorite genre. I did, however, enjoy this. I really enjoyed it. You do have a few spelling and grammar mistakes somewhere within the story. I ca...

Samuel Garbett: I love the style.I love the setting.I love the atmosphere. You've tapped into something fantastic here, from the clearly invested-in characters down to the language used to portray the genre perfectly.I'd consider myself hooked.
