The Real Hero of Canton

By HarrietH2O

Romance / Scifi

Chapter 1

Fess Higgins remembered.

When he stood up to his father for the first time - he remembered. When his father died and he became Magistrate - he remembered. As he slowly started to loosen the rules making the mudders’ lives hell - he remembered. When the first Mudders’ Unions were set up, and the decrees for fair pay were passed, and the harsh punishments were lifted -

He remembered.

Whenever he let his conscience win over his obedience to his father, he remembered how she’d nurtured him. Whenever one of the workers thanked him, tears in their eyes, for the improvements he had made to their lives, he remembered that it was her who had made him what he was today.

He looked with his mind’s eye at how the town had been before, and he remembered.

He looked at how the town was now - thriving and happy - with the mudders producing more clay now than ever, and he never forgot.

Whenever he walked past the statue of Jayne Cobb in the town square, he remembered who the real hero of Canton was. He remembered how her words had changed him; how she’d shown him that he was his own person. How she’d taught him to make his own choices.

The real hero of Canton.

The woman who had taught him to be a man.

Sandra Estrada: I loved every minute of it and I thank my lucky stars that brought me to the story, it's been a whirlwind of emotions, plot twist after plot twist but I never got tired of them. Abby and Kade's story is a hard one to understand but once you're submerged in their story and love, you can't help but...

Alex Rushmer: This was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it a lot Malfoy was always one of the characters that I liked a lot, so I like that a lot of this happens between him and Colette. I read the first couple chapters, and I enjoyed your writing style and am excited to see where you take this story. My com...

Hawkebat: Playing both Kotor I & II and Swtor I found the story line interesting and it held me until chapter 35 Very good story and plot flow until then, very few technical errors. I felt that the main character was a bit under and over powered, as it fought for balance. The last few chapters felt too f...

Greg Bastiansz: The plot overall is exciting and keeps the reader on edge. Could be read on one sitting. However, I have a couple of issues that needs the author's attention. The first been the glaring grammatical error. Proofreading is a must. Second the plot could have been thickened by adding substance and g...

LouiseJ2: I enjoyed the detail you went into with regards to the case. It made the UNSUB appear believable. The crisis in the middle of the story was my favorite part, very dramatic but not over the top. I feel like sometimes pairings can be overdone but I liked that some of the relationships were a little...

263Adder: Okay so I adore this story. I only knocked one star off plot for historical inaccuracies because I'm a bit of a stickler for that. The ending broke my heart though, considering you already changed history couldn't you (SPOILER) change it a bit more and have them together!!!! I want an alternative...

Jean Tryon: As a beta, I found this story outstanding!! Plot, grammar, phraseology, etc Rachel gives us it all. She takes the story into the future from where due South ends. She is an exacting and thoughtful author.

Destiny Green: The story was good and something different as a good LGBT story is harder to find. There were some parts that need to move more fluently but overall the writing style and skill is very good. I throughly enjoyed the plot and was excited to read what would happen to the characters.

CurlyRed: I read this entire book in just under 4 hours I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! i found myself emotionally attached to the characters and making personal connections that i had never experienced before while reading a book! PaulSenkel: If you like Arthur C. Clarke's Odyssey, especially The Final Odyssey, then you will probably also enjoy this book.
