The Next Move
“Come on! We’re leaving!” Sasuke shouted as he rushed into your room. You heard him stuffing all your things into your bag before he grabbed your wrist and began a brisk pace out the door.
You were practically tripping over your own feet, “Sasuke wait! What’s going on? Where are we going?”
“Far away from here.”
He answered no more questions for the time being and merely pulled you along. Having memorized the hideout, you figured out that Sasuke was pulling you towards the exit. You were actually ′leaving’, leaving?
As soon as you climbed the steps in front of the main door, putting you outside, you felt the sun on your skin and it was bliss. You hadn’t been outside since Sasuke and you arrived at the hideout--well, he might have but not you.
The warmth of the sun instantly made you feel a little happier and the fresh air practically coated your lungs and cleansed you. You wanted to stay out here forever and bask in the freedom you felt.
“Come on, we can’t stay here.”
Sasuke pulled you along for some time before you got a break. Your break being him carrying you bridal style because you kept tripping over roots and shrubbery. It wasn’t all your fault, though, he was just going too fast and wasn’t warning you of anything beforehand so you could make sure to avoid it.
Eventually, after a long time of stretched silence, Sasuke stopped running and set you down. He was panting, you even heard him collapse to the ground so he could catch his breath.
“What’s going on?” You asked, confused.
Sasuke took a few deep breaths, “I… I killed him. We couldn’t stay there anymore, it wasn’t safe.”
“You killed… Orochimaru?” You were baffled, but Sasuke offered confirmation. You then slumped down next to Sasuke, taking everything in. “What do we do now?”
Sasuke stiffened and you felt it as you were sitting so close next to him, “I need to go after my brother.”
“Itachi…” You whispered, thinking back to all the wrong that single Uchiha had done to an entire clan. His entire clan.
“I don’t expect you to come with me for this one.” Sasuke interrupted your thoughts. “This time, things will be much more dangerous. I don’t know if I’ll be able to protect you all the time.”
You pondered this information, “How much more dangerous?”
There was silence for a couple minutes and you wondered what could be so awful it would be hard to tell you. You were actually starting to hate all the quietness. “I’m going after the Akatsuki…”
The wind chose that moment to blow past you, throwing your hair out to the side before it died down again. “Itachi’s with the Akatsuki?”
“Orochimaru told me a couple months ago. Probably his way of telling me I needed to train harder.”
The Akatsuki are a criminal organization comprised of missing S-Class ninja. Their main goal is to capture all of the tailed beasts to unleash the Ten-Tails--your father told you stories of them as a child. They’re powerful individuals, stronger than any foe you had ever faced before, and they were ruthless. They would do anything to reach their goals, even if it meant the deaths of those in their way. You really didn’t want to get involved with them.
“Is there no other way to get to your brother? Couldn’t we draw him out somehow? Alone…”
“Let’s hope things can be that simple.” You heard Sasuke shift around before you felt his hand on your knee. “Thank you, for not running away. For sticking with me all this time.”
You smiled, “I’d never leave you.”
There was a brief moment of pause before you felt Sasuke’s lips on yours; a gentle kiss. It was so sudden and you hadn’t even expected it that you just sat there in shock and did nothing. The kiss felt like minutes had gone by but in actuality, it had only been a few seconds. Then he pulled away.
“I might die if we do this, going after the Akatsuki, and if that’s the case, I don’t want to go before you know how I feel about you.” You reached a hand up to your face and touched your lips, still feeling the lingering sensation. “You different,” he went on, “You’re not like Sakura or Ino, or any of the other girls. Maybe it’s just because you can’t see, so you’re not seeing the physical me. But I like that about you, because you’re the first person to see me for what I am on the inside and you haven’t run away.”
The two of you basked in each other’s presence for a while, sitting comfortably and talking while you caught your breath. There were even a few more exchanges of passionate kisses.
“Sasuke, can I ask you something?”
“What do you know of the Otsuo clan?”
“Only what everyone learned in at the Academy: they were a powerful clan and were fundamental to the prosperity the Land of Fire now has. I guess you could say they’re one of the reasons the Land of Fire exists and why it’s such a great power today. But then they all died out from assassins or illness. Why?”
“I think…” You reached for your bag, you were going to pull out your book--you wanted to tell him everything, no more secrets.
You heard a faint hum followed by a low whistle. Immediately you pulled out a kunai and held it at just the right angle in front of your face. The shuriken bounced off the small weapon and thudded to the ground. Sasuke and you quickly got on your feet, ready for a fight.
“Well, well, looks like you were right, boss. These two look like they’ve got a lot of valuable things on them.” A man emerged from behind a tree, sword in hand, ready to charge.
A few more men came out, surrounding you, there was nowhere to run. “Let’s hope they don’t mind parting with their trinkets.”
