"Found you."

His eyes widened at the voice that followed weak breaths, sweat beading on both of their faces melodramatically, the small boys' uneven breaths making it out to be an event that it wasn't.

He blinked as he looked at his hands that reached out to the other boys' body as he giggled, pushing the other to the grass-cushioned ground.

His joyful laughter only quieted as he ran in glee.

These were the rare moments to live like the kids they were.
The beautiful daylight fog should've signalled the storm that almost always followed. Darkness that clouded their mere seconds, happiness so short they took it as a gift.

His eyes trailed the house in front of him, running in as he panted, the energy he'd lost perhaps blinding him, forgetting that what'd he'd done was crime-like. Or at least that's what the punishment for it said.

The loud thump in his heart sped up as the sound got louder, the feeling as heavy as the sweat coming on.

A tall man, with a suit, and a face he assumed was plastered on him permanently, stared at him distastefully. He swallowed at the scowling man, his face not exactly one of a judgmental parent. No- far worse.

"813 what are you doing. No running."
He snarled at the little boy who backed away, scared, but relieved.

His dad never let him off this easily.

"Go call 066 and tell him to set the table."
The man rose his voice when he saw the boy still standing there. "I said now!" He bellowed, his face turning a flushed red at the level he had to obtain.

His nods were almost as quick as the pace he ran out at. He looked at the boy that was still looking for him, yelling joking threats that would be taken out when he would find him. The seeker's face dropped as he saw the expression on the boy after his encounter.

"Did dad touch you?" The little boy shook his head as his words were stumbled on. "He- he called me to tell you to set up the table. P-p-pl-please come in. I'm scared."

The aftermath of disobedience served a punishment no one wanted to face.

The older one took his hand. Even if he was only a couple of months older, he took the duties of the eldest. Whether he he wanted to or not.

"I'll protect you. Don't worry."

His head went down as he carefully scaled down the bunk's ladder. He shook the hair blocking his forehead as if it was impairing his vision.

"Mother said I could get paints for my birthday tomorrow. I'll be 6 just like you," he shared proudly. His feet landed on the floor tiles with a thump, his eyes darting as he watched his brother wipe a thick substance.

"Did dad punish you for me?" His visible concern only made the other's head shake more vigorously.

"It's nothing. I just tripped."

"Promise?" The younger asked, sticking out his pinky.
066 laced his own pinky smiling weakly, swallowing grimly as he felt their fingers intertwine.
"I swear."

He yawned as he pulled away, staring at the younger impatiently. "Now let's go to bed, or a monster will eat us for staying up late." The younger crossed his arms, his eyes looking at him suspiciously.

"Will not."
"Will so."

The older sighed defeated. "I'm not doing this again. Come on, let's sleep. I'm tired." The younger watched his brother sleep. He did it every night before he went to bed just to be sure no monster would eat his older brother.

When he heard snoring, he leant closer to kiss the boy on the forehead.

"Goodnight," he whispered before rubbing his eyes tiredly, nodding in satisfaction as he returned to the top bed. 066 opened his eyes slightly, letting out light exhales.

He never did let his younger see him crossing his fingers from the back every time he made a pinky swear.
