Dear Life

(y/n) - your name

“Mama?” I groan out loud when I feel someone tap me on my face. I turn around to escape whoever was poking me but it just doesn’t stop.

“I’m up. I’m up.” I could barely hear myself as I sit up. I rub my eyes and notice that Jungkook was sitting on my lap, his eyes welling up with tears.

“Baby, what’s wrong?” I jump harshly and look outside to see that it was still storming outside. The sky was still dark and the living room lit up when thunder clapped. Jungkook whimpered and hid his face in my stomach. “Shh. It’s ok.”

Who am I kidding, I’m scared of thunder too.

I pick Jungkook up and get up from the couch, careful to not scare Jackson that was snoring away on the other couch. I quickly run upstairs to my bedroom and open the bedroom door.

Oh no.

Taehyung was tossing and turning on the bed, crying and wailing out in his sleep.

Shit! He’s having a nightmare!

I run over to Taehyung and put Jungkook down on my bed.

“Taehyung. Sweetie. Wake up.” I shake Taehyung lightly but he still doesn’t open his eyes.

Please wake up.

Taehyung suddenly jumps up, his eyes wide with tears. I take Taehyungs body and hold it close to me, trying to calm his shaking. He cries into my neck, his arms gripping my shirt.

“Shh. I’m here. It’s ok.”

He must have dreamt about his parents.

I rock Taehyung in my lap, humming softly.

“Come here kookie.” I bring my other arm open and Jungkook crawls into my arms, laying his head in my other neck. “You’re both safe. It’s ok, I’m here.” I continue to rock with the boys in my arms, trying to soothe their terrors away. Taehyung quiets down, his hiccups turning to soft sniffles before his breath evens and he falls asleep again. Jungkook knocks back to sleep the moment he was in my arms and I carefully move so I laid on my side with both boys next to me. Jungkook laid closer to my chest with Taehyung next to him. I draped an arm over them both, sometimes rubbing their hands or their backs and I soon fall asleep next to them.

“(y/n).” Someone shakes my shoulder and I swat them away. “Wake up.” they keep shaking me and I groan out in annoyance.

“Let me sleep. Stop annoying me.”

“Never! Now wake up!” I open my eyes and see Jackson hovering over me with a grin on my face.

“Your face is really punchable right now.” He looks at me in horror and takes a big step away from my bed. I get up and yawn, noticing that the bed was empty beside me.

“Don’t worry, they are downstairs.” Jackson nods to my open bedroom door and that’s when I hear the sounds of the TV.

“Why did you wake me up?” I turn to Jackson and his expression goes grim.

“We have to go back to the apartment building.”

Wait, does he mean THAT one?

“The owners of the building want everyone who lived in the building before the fire to come back and take whatever is there that was salvageable.”

“Everything would’ve been burnt down though.” I whisper and get up to close my bedroom door.

I don’t want Taehyung hearing of this, not yet anyway.

“I know. That’s what I thought too but apparently some items were saved. Not a lot.” Jackson says and hands me my phone. I saw that I received a message and a missed call from an unknown number. “I answered for you.”

“When do they want us to go over there?”

“Today actually. Now if possible.”

“Now!? You should’ve woken me earlier!”

“You’re hard to wake up! And I don’t want to die!” Jackson screeches out and I glare at him. I sigh out and open my bedroom door.

“Ok fine. Can you go and get the boys ready in Jungkooks room while I get breakfast ready. Both of their clothes are going to be in there. That reminds me, I need to buy another bed.”

“Ok sure. So we are bringing the kids?”

Why did that sound like we are an old married couple?

“Uh, yeah.”

“Cool, let me go get my shoes.”

I park the car a few blocks away from the burnt building and everyone starts to unbuckle as I get out of the car. I open the door and help Jungkook down from his seater and Jackson helps Taehyung down. I lock the car as Taehyung comes to my side and holds my hand as Jungkook holds the other.

“Ready?” I look down at Taehyung who was quiet the whole ride since we told him why were coming here. Taehyung nods and I look at Jackson.

Is this a good idea?

Jackson shrugs and walks off. We all follow him to the building and I feel Taehyung tighten his grip on my hand as we stood in front of it. It looked terrible. The whole building was black and almost looked like it was about to crumble anytime soon. I looked to my left and saw a few desks and boxes filled with stuff along with a few people hovering around them.

“I’ll look after them.” I tell Jackson and take both boys over to the boxes as a man in a suit walks over to Jackson to discuss funerals and wills. Taehyung instantly runs to the boxes and starts sifting around, trying to find anything that belonged to him. A few of the people that lived in the building recognized him and gave him their sympathies. This whole time, Jungkook huddled by my legs, playing with his bunny.

“Excuse me miss. Are you looking after Taehyung?” A middle-aged woman walks up to me with a box in her arms, her question throwing me off a little.

“Uh yes I am. Who might you be?”

“I was a maid that worked under Taehyungs parents.” She smiles at me and hands me the box. “I came here before everyone else to find whatever belonged to Taehyung.” I look into the box to see a few trinkets and toys. At the bottom, I saw a photo frame and took it out to see a happy family standing before the brightly lit amusement park. “Thank you for taking him in.” The woman smiled at me, her eyes glazing over with tears as she walked away, not before taking one last glance at Taehyung.

She must have brought Taehyung up along with his parents.

I feel someone tug on my pants and look down to see Taehyung with a sad look, shaking his head as I put the frame back in the box.

“I didn’t find anything.” He murmurs and I bend down with the box in my arms.

“What’s that mama?” Jungkook eagerly shoves his head in the box, not letting Taehyung see inside.

“This is Taehyungs stuff.” Taehyung looks up at me in shock and I nod, putting down the box on the floor. He looks through it, his eyes wide. Taehyung slowly takes out the photo frame of his parents, hugging it.

“Look at all the toys!” Jungkook shouts out and I shake my head, chuckling softly.

“They are not yours kookie. They belong to Taehyung.” Jungkook pouts and crosses his arms. “How about this. If you boys behave while we go out shopping today, we can get ice-cream afterwards.”

“Ice-cream! Ice-cream!” Jungkook jumps in excitement and I look over at Taehyung who smiled at me nodding.

He’s happy. I’m glad.
