I was only six when my parents sent me to Japan. I went from Hong Kong to Tokyo so quick. I don’t remember much about my past, but I do remember that I was sent away because I didn’t know how to control my quirk. My quirk is earthly manipulation. No I can not manipulate the earth itself. But I can manipulate any earthly minerals or elements. For example, Fire comes from the earth so I can control it, water comes from the earth so I can control it. So you see why it would be a very difficult quirk to master, and none of my family has a quirk so they are no good in helping me.
Do I think that them not knowing how to help me justifies them sending me to this hell hole? Absolutely not. But I do see the why in the situation. I had a good relationship with my family I think. But they were just concerned that it would destroy me if I didn’t know how to control my ability. I think they wanted to send me to somewhere where they knew what they were doing. This place I can say they are definitely training me to use it, but not in a good way.
I’m nine so I’ve only been here for three years. I think they’re going easy on me, because I’ve seen what they’ve made people older than me go through. They destroy these kids mentally, and make these kids do things that steals their childhood away. Who would do such a thing?
Anyways today we are getting new recruits. Recruits as in new guests that will have to do the same fucked up shit we have to do or even worse.
I overheard at lunch yesterday that the recruits were eighteen, nine, and five. People say that the youngest you can recruit is five, but people pay big money to send kids here so who knows. I’m the youngest here, they call me the avatar. Ya know that old show on Nickelodeon? Yea cause the bald dude with the arrow on his head can control all the elements and more, and I can do the same thing so yea.
It’s about 5:30 am right now. They wake us up at 5:00 to get the day started. We used to choose if we ate breakfast, but they said it made us weaker so we have to eat breakfast. My friend Tara is anorexic so she asks if I can eat her food because they don’t really supervise the kids. Shits really fucked up here but that’s just the beginning of how ass this place is. Title get worse.
Right now I stay in a dorm alone. I look in the mirror in the small bathroom. I pull up my long ass hair into a high ponytail and put on my uniform. The uniform consists of a black shirt with a grey design on the front, grey shorts/ sweat pants, and black sneakers. For the girls we wear the same shirt, but with leggings and the shirts a little tighter.
I hear the bell ring meaning it’s time for breakfast. I hear the metal door to my room slide open. I quickly exit because it closes after 1 minute. I walk with the rest of the recruits down the stairs. I feel a bump on my hip and look beside me to find Tara and Luna.
Tara is from Thailand. She has the Water quirk so people call her Katara , Luna has a Fire quirk so they call her Azula. So we are basically like the Avatar group. Tara got here last year, and Luna got here a few months ago. We just stick together, just us.
“I heard the new recruits are all boys!” Luna whisper yells, since we are all supposed to keep quiet in the mornings.
“Shush Tara we aren’t supposed to talk” Tara whispers back.
“Hmph, but one of them is our age, don’t you care to talk to them?” She retorts.
“Jeez Luna, we all come from messed up backgrounds, it won’t be any different for them. I’m sure they aren’t here to make friends or chat with anyone” she says nudging Luna in the side.
Once we obtain our food we sit at our usual table on the (five-twelve years old) side of the cafeteria. We only get two options for breakfast. On Monday- Thursday we get Fried rice, salmon, milk and fruit. And on Friday’s we get ramen, eggs, fried rice, Salmon, bacon, and ramune.
“Sweet it’s Friday!” Luna yells opening her bottle of Ramune.
“Shhhhhh” Tara says.
Luna replies by rolling her eyes.
As I’m slurping up my ramen I realize that the table is shaking. I’ve only been here for three years, I haven’t fully controlled my powers yet. So when I’m not paying attention my quirk starts to go off. The table is metal and wood so the two elements together triggered my quirk.
Usually the only thing that can stop the spasm is hitting me, and the guards like to take advantage of that.
Tara quickly steps in my foot and I stop.
“Thanks” I whisper. She replies with a smile and continues her meal.
It’s about 7 am and everyone is just chatting up a storm before the bell suddenly rings and everyone goes quiet.
“Today residents five through twelve will go to training room a and residents thirteen through eighteen will go to Training room b” the intercom announces.
We all get up and head to the second flight of stairs to the training room.
We all enter and go find a spot on the mat.
“Today before we start training, we have two new recruits going us today. First we have Touya Todoroki. His quirk is Blue flame. demonstrate your quirk boy.” The Trainer says pushing him slightly up to the front.
I watch attentively as he uses his quirk, I can see clearly that he is harming himself using his ability. He is burning himself.
“That’s enough” the trainer finally says, after watching his skin bubble up.
“As you know, in this age group we have a few children who possess element quirks like yours. But we have a child who possess all the elements” Touya freezes and looks around. As if he’s scared to be challenged.
“Tera Wang, Earthly Element manipulation quirk. She can control every single earthly element known to man. She is are most prized child. But I see your quirk is very powerful considering it overpowers the host” the trainer adds.
“So with that I want you to fight each other. This battle will be considered a power test. For Tera it will test if her ability is stronger making her go up in her tank. For you it will test if you are more powerful than the top ranked.” He concludes.
Everyone sits down on the grass and I make my way up to him. I bow to him signifying no hard feelings. He does the same.
I get in a stance and feel the elements around me. There is a lake just behind the building, we are surrounded in plants and rock, and the gates are metal wire. I’m ready.
He gulps as he gets into a position.
“Now!” The trainer yells.
My eyes glow a dark red and the ground begins to shake beneath him.
Before I know it his skin is bubbling again, and a blue light flashes before me. I dunk and avoid his charge. Now I am in the position he started in and he is in mine. He tries to run after me but before he can, a single block of earth throws him across the field.
He throws another flame at me, again I dodge it. I knock the air out of his lungs with a slab of metal stolen from the water spout on the building.
For twenty minutes we continue to fight constantly, it’s 30-0 basically and I can’t sit here and watch him get defeated by me. It’s almost sad.
I bend down to tie my shoes. He’s in the air right now, hanging on a root for dear life, so he probably won’t be able to get to me.
Boy am I wrong because suddenly I feel a burning sensation on my side. I roll over yelling in agonizing pain.
I can’t make words, all I can do is scream. I’ve been burnt by Luna on accident, her burns don’t even come close to the burn I feel now. I weakly stand up to look at my burn. He burnt my uniform shirt so I can clearly see the damage he’s caused.
The burn as we speak bubbles up and pops like boiling water. It’s red and wrinkly and my skin is practically melting away. Tears fall so fast it drops on the burn, making it sting all the more.
“IM SO SORRY I-“ Touya gets out before I try to speak back.
“It’s ok just- Ah- just go get some medical attention. This hurts you more than it hurts me” I say. He just freezes and looks at me like he hurt his mom.
“It’s ok, I’m fine really.. ah fuck- just go ok?” I say, urging him to just leave. He nods before running with the guard back inside to the nurse.
“Well Tera, this means you have lowered in your rank, and Touya has taken your place. You’ve disappointed me today. Do better next class” the trainer tells me before leaving me alone outside with the guard.
I follow the guard back inside after the others to retreat to the nurse.
After my wounds are treated and bandaged up it’s about 4 pm. That dude burned me so bad that the wound had to be cured quickly before it became a third degree burn, and those burns are nasty.
It took them hours to heal it to the point where they had to put me on Anesthesia because it hurt so bad. I was screaming the entire time so I guess they wanted to shut me up.
At four we eat lunch.
The nurse gave me the go to eat lunch and told me to see her tomorrow for a follow up treatment.
I make my way out of the lunch line and sit at the table. To my surprise my friends have invited Touya to sit and eat with us.
I stay silent and and just eat my spring rolls.
“Ok we can explain” Luna starts. I look up, stop eating, and wait for her to explain.
“Oh well- um he apologized, you said it was fine, and um he’s new so” she tries to explain but fails miserably.
“That’s a lame excuse.. but I don’t actually care anyways. No hard feelings” I say continuing to chew my food.
“Does- Does it still hurt” he speaks up.
“Nah, they put something on it so I’m fine. And look I get burnt all the time. It’s probably gonna happen more than once so don’t sweat it” I say.
He stares at me, he looks guilty. He looks as if he’s done something horrid and will never be able to move past it.
Damn Tara said people go through shit before coming here... but what the fuck did he do to feel this guilty for burning me on accident?
It’s 10 pm. Along with training we also do regular school so we aren’t dumb. I just got done with my final class and decide to join my friends on the rooftop.
“Hey Tera!” Keigo yells. I wave at him before sitting on the bench next to Luna and Tara.
“Sorry for the burn thing, um but Touya is coming-“
“Look guys in not mad at the guy ok? And to me it sounds like every time you invite him somewhere that I’m gonna be you make him feel bad about today.” I blurt.
“Oh... I thought you had some type of grudge against him. That burn looked nasty” My friend Taro assumes.
“You guys know I don’t hold any grudges. He isn’t any different. And especially for his first day here you guys are making it harder than it already is. I mean he already goes through so much with his quirk, he doesn’t need to feel guilty about hurting someone with it. So can we just leave today’s events alone and talk about something else? Ok like my life sucks but I’m not the only one who’s life sucks give him a break” I say.
They all point their attention behind me. I look behind me to see the white haired boy standing at the rooftop door.
I feel like he’s gonna cry but I don’t know.
He walks slowly towards us and squats down to my level.
“My life sucks too”
