Him

Romance / Action

Blurb

Heidi Kirschmann had turned down the Military Police, her hard work and subsequent ranking had never been about that ‘honour’. It ached in her bones; the memories that filled her lungs, blistering along with this need to stand in this very courtyard after training. She had no idea of what was in store; that the drive she so verily clung to would lead her to some unknown end, one that may just prove she had been destined to fly rather than prance for much longer than the five years.

Prologue

To be here was to fulfil her death wish, or so her peers had snuffed. She could hear the echoes of their voices, somewhere between the blazing Sun and the squinting of her eyes. They had walked away from the recruitment drive and into the inner sanctum of Wall Sina to live the life of privilege among the Military Police. It was a life that she had refused: the life of those that had turned their backs on Humanity. Heidi wondered why she should think on them now, on what others had perceived of her vehement decision of protest. It had never been a source of contention in her mind and, given the state of things, it was a selfish consideration. What they thought, what they did, none of it was of consequence.

It didn’t entirely cross her mind, nor weigh on her brow that circumstance was why these memories had taken up her thoughts; it was the first inspection as a member of the Scouting Legion, a day that marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. All she felt was the same ache in her bones she’d bourn for years, warming her heart.

She bit the inside of her cheek, curled her toes a little, allowed it all to fill her lungs along with the crisp Spring morning air. Here, with the emblem of freedom resting against every breath, she felt a sense of peace and purpose. She had Eren and Armin at her side, in both a literal and a poetic sense, and beyond them, her friends from the the 104th trainees squad. The young men and women who had rallied together as they found their sense of drive. They were true comrades and people Heidi would trust with her life. Age hadn’t impaired their bond. Here it didn’t matter, just your mettle and your will to do your best for Humanity. Her five years of seniority had ebbed away to make room for sheer determination and idealistic views for this cruel world. This is where she belonged, not in the security of Sina or its undoubtedly abysmal patriarchy. This is where she would make a difference to Humanity.
