Who is Batman?

Chapter 14

Making it back to the Batmobile, Batman placed Andrea gently inside the passenger seat and strapped her in. Turning to Robin, he said, “I’ll meet you back at home.”

“Do you think she’ll remember half of what she said tonight,” Robin asked as he stared down at Andrea who was still wrapped in his cape.

Batman shrugged, “I have no idea, Robin. I really do think it shock. I doubt she’s ever been kidnapped before.”

“Okay,” Robin agreed. He then climbed on his motorcycle and he sped for home.

Ten minutes later Batman drove into the Batcave and parked his car after dropping Andrea off at the door with Alfred. He’d done that just in case anyone had followed him from the crime scene.

Quickly getting out of the car, he strode for the elevator that would take him up into the house without stopping to remove his suit. Instead, he went straight to his bedroom, took off the suit and pulled on a pair of sweatpants.

Dick walked in and asked, “You want me to put the suit away?”

“Please,” Bruce said, “and I’ll try to get your cape from Andrea.”

Dick laughed as he picked Batman’s suit off the bed. “She really likes yellow.”

“Apparently,” Bruce agreed before heading to Andrea’s room. Walking inside, he found Alfred there with an ice pack sitting on the edge of the bed. “How is she?”

Alfred turned to look at Bruce as he said, “She’ll be okay but she’s going to have a horrible bruise tomorrow. She woke up for a moment asking about peas for her bruise. I told her I didn’t have any peas, but I did have this ice pack. She told me that was fine and promptly went right back to sleep. What happened to her?”

“I’m not sure,” Bruce said with a sigh. “She never really did tell us, she just kept talking about how pretty Robin’s yellow cape is. That yellow is her favorite color, and that she needed to let me know she hadn’t stood me up. Most of what she said was rambling nonsense. Although, she did mention that they wanted a ransomed for her.”

“Yes, but we already knew that. It sounds a bit like she was in shock,” Alfred mentioned.

“That’s kind of what I thought too,” Bruce agreed.

“She did mention a broken tooth,” Alfred said as he stood up to leave. “I looked, and as far as I can tell they all seem perfectly fine.”

“I’m so happy to know that,” Andrea slurred from the bed.

“I’m glad to hear it,” Bruce said as he saw her eyes open and look at him. So, he moved closer and mentioned, “Robin would like his cape back.”

Andrea hummed as she ran a hand over the cape that now lay next to her. “I figured he would. It’s really pretty, but it looks better on him.”

Bruce picked it up and handed it to Alfred, who quietly left the room. “So, can you tell me what happened tonight?”

“I had texted you and walked to my car,” Andrea began. “I received your second text and was about to text back when I heard something behind me. I turned, saw two men in ski masks, and dropped my phone when the one man hit me. I came to and found myself hanging over the bigger man’s shoulder. I struggled a bit, but the guy was like super strong and they tied me to a chair. Then you and Richard came and rescued me.”

Bruce nodded and said, “We heard a little bit of conversation before we came in. Do you really think your dad will do something?”

Andrea huffed and murmured, “If you knew my dad, you wouldn’t be asking that. Dad is… well, he’s a dad and he would move mountains for me if he thought that was what I wanted. Lately, we’ve butted heads, a lot, but I know he still loves me and wants the best for me. So, yeah, if he finds out what happened he will be here banging on your door by morning.”

Bruce closed his eyes, bowing his head. Then, taking a deep breath, he murmured, “I saved you as Batman and even though I didn’t see anyone, the possibility of pictures from tonight being leaked is a real possibility because they always seem to find me.”

Andrea yawned, grunting when it hurt her swollen cheek. Then, still slurring slightly, she said, “I’ll worry about that tomorrow. For now, lay down and hold me, please.”

“With pleasure, Baby,” Bruce murmured as he pulled back the covers to climb in. He frowned though when he saw she was still fully dressed, and asked, “Don’t you want to change out of these clothes?”

“It might make me feel better,” Andrea agreed. “A shower might be nice too.” So, Andrea got up and after grabbing clean clothes, she headed for the shower.

With a yawn, Bruce sat down to wait for her.

Andrea groaned as the sound of a phone ringing woke her. She was snuggled against a warm body and didn’t want to move, but the phone continued to ring unendingly. Finally, with a grunt, she rolled over and patted blindly on her nightstand for her phone. Feeling it with her hand, she brought it to her face, squinting an eye open for a second so she could see to hit the answer button.

“Hello?”

“Girl! Have you seen the news this morning?” Jeannette all but hollered.

Andrea cringed as she held the phone away from her ear. When the yelling stopped, she returned the phone to her ear and answered, “No, Jeannette. I was sound asleep when the phone rang.”

“Still asleep! Did you stay up too late at the fancy Gala you went to…?” Jeannette asked. Then, before Andrea could answer, she said, “Ooh, stop side-tracking me!”

“I wasn’t trying—” Andrea huffed, only to be interrupted.

“Batman was seen last night carrying a woman from a building. He put her in his car, Andrea!” Jeannette said, her voice growing louder as she went on. “He’s steppin’ out on me I tell you! If I ever get my hands on that man stealing woman, I will pull every hair from her head one by one for stealing my Batsy away from me!”

Andrea turned her wide-eyes to Bruce, who was now awake, his eyes open, behind her. She swallowed hard and murmured, “I’m so sorry to hear that, Jeannette. Perhaps it was innocent—”

“It was not! If it had been innocent, the girl would have gone home with the police who came out after that with two men in handcuffs,” Jeannette snorted.

Andrea sat up and pushed her hair from her face and felt like whimpering as she brushed over her bruised cheek. She almost hyperventilated as she thought about the fact, she had given Commissioner Gordon her name.

“Um, Jeannette, I need to go, but I’ll talk to you later,” Andrea murmured.

“Watch the news,” Jeannette grumbled before saying goodbye and hanging up.

Andrea turned to face Bruce and whispered, “I gave Gordon my name. If she finds out I was the woman.” She sighed. “Not only that, but I have a feeling my face doesn’t look too pretty just by the way it feels.”

Bruce gently ran a fingertip along her still swollen lip and agreed, “No, it doesn’t look pretty. Unless you want everyone to know about what happened you’re going to have to stay home from work for a few days.”

Andrea groaned and closed her eyes. “I might as well just quit because they weren’t really supportive when I took off the last time.”

“There are other jobs out there,” Bruce murmured as he pulled her back down to lay on his chest.

Andrea sighed, rubbing the unbruised side of her face against the lightly furred chest. She began to trail her fingertips up and down his arm as she hummed a random tune. Finally, a bit calmer, she said, “I guess, and I really don’t like that job much. Also, since I’ve been staying here, I’ve been able to put more money back, so my nest egg has grown quite a bit.”

“See, plenty of money means plenty of time to lay around with me doing nothing,” Bruce teased.

Andrea patted his chest as she reminded him, “You don’t have time to lay around doing nothing, Mr. Wayne.”

Bruce gave a heavy sigh which had her head coming up to look in his eyes. “Andrea, I don’t want you to have to work, I want to take care of you.”

Andrea tilted her head, wondering if he was saying what she thought he was. Swallowing hard she whispered, “Bruce, what are you…?”

“I love you, Andrea,” Bruce told her.

Tears filled her eyes and Andrea replied, “I love you too, Bruce. I think I have from the moment you looked at me the first time. There was such pain in your eyes, yet there was a loneliness in them that I understood too well.”

“You took that loneliness away and brought sunshine back to this cold, dark manor I live in,” Bruce said. “You have made life fuller for both me and for Dick. Before, I filled my days with work. I made myself into a playboy to hide my dark alter ego in the evenings. Then I spent my nights patrolling the city to thwart villains from creating havoc on Gotham. I had no life, even with all of that. All I was doing was existing until you came along.”

Andrea leaned in and kissed him softly and gently, so as not to put pressure on her still swollen lip. “I couldn’t do what you do without breaking, Bruce. I honestly don’t know how you do it.”

Bruce smiled and said, “It isn’t easy, but you make it easier because I have you being here to look forward to. Andrea, I love you so much, please marry me.”

A sob finally escaped Andrea as she fell forward on top of him to hug him the best she could while laying on a bed. “I will, Bruce. I want to be yours and only yours. I want to be a loving wife to you, and a good example to Richard, and maybe have a baby or two with you. I want it all.”

“I want it all too,” Bruce told her. “I have actually picked out a ring, with Dick’s help, and planned to have a romantic dinner to ask you, but last night…” he took a deep breath, holding her a bit tighter as he trembled. “Last night I realized I could lose you in a heartbeat, and I don’t want to waste any more time. I want to spend as much time loving you as I possibly can, for as long as we have.”

“I think that sounds like a wonderful idea,” Andrea murmured just as someone tapped on her door.

“Master Bruce, I hate to bother you, but I think there is something you and Miss Andrea need to see,” Alfred called out.

“What is it, Alfred?” Bruce asked as he stood up and opened the door.

“The news,” Alfred explained. “Footage was anonymously leaked about what happened last night and it’s all over the news how Batman saved Bruce Wayne’s mistress and brought her to his home.”

Andrea gave a cry and whispered, “Oh, no!”

Bruce stood frozen.
