The Eldest Brother's Burden

The weight on his shoulders is not easy to bear

Simply because it has always been there

It is instinct, it’s rote

The way it pulls at his throat

Young hands trained to protect and care


But not for himself, never himself

He does not want, he does not need

His father haunts his every deed

With his brother’s life, hung on a thread

To keep him alive, or make him dead
