Warrior Cats - The RavineClan Chronicles - Book #1: Times Change Like The Wind

By Olivia N J Hamel

Fantasy / Adventure

Blurb

When three cats are thrown off a ship into the ocean, they never dreamed they'd wash ashore alive. To survive they unite as a tight-knit clan, but a cruel part of life is that times change.

CHAPTER 1

Three cats stood in the meadow in the small dip in the earth, surrounded by a tall hill that protected them from the threat of the outside. Two cats argued angrily as to what they should do, as they had been traveling for days on end after having been abandoned and thrown off the side of a ship into the ocean by their housefolk. They had no idea how to survive out in the wild, and had only been mere chance survived the ocean and washed ashore on this new strange land.

One tom leaped on top of a ledge that overlooked the clearing and a yowl rang from his mouth. “Rose, Ash—gather below this rock and hear what I have to say.”

The two cats did and listened intently for what he had to say; this cat had always been a leadership figure for them, being the strongest of them both.

The cat on top of the ledge was named Jack and he lashed his tail with authority. “We must unite, and form a clan. We must bring order into the midst of chaos if we are to survive,” he proposed.

Rose flattened her ears uncertainly. “We don’t know how! Our lousy housefolk tried to kill us, and by whatever god there is I would rather have perished in those tidal waves.”

“We can’t give up! Hear me out, we will never see our housefolk again, and we did survive—we can’t give up. I have heard stories of cats forming clans with ranks and duties; I think we can do it if we really give it a shot,” explained Jack, his eyes alight with determination.

Ash raised his muzzle to the sky. “He is right, Rose. We must do as he says.”

Rose still showed signs of being unsure of the whole thing, but nodded her approval anyway. After all, they all still did wish to keep on living—and how else could they do it? They needed food and hunting together as one would make everything easier. If they had a leader, everything would be easier.

“Then it’s settled,” declared Jack, pointing his ears forward. “From this day on we are no longer kittypets, we are cats of the wild. I name our clan WispClan, in honor of the ship that helped us end up here—the Crying Wisp.”

Excitement began clinging to the fur tips of Ash and Rose. This was definitely the right choice.

“Today and forevermore, I will be known as Tidalstar—tidal in honor of the waves that carried us to this land,” the first leader of WispClan went on, “and you, Ash, will be known as Sedgetail; I choose you as deputy of this Clan, to become leader in my paw-steps should something happen to me. Rose, I name you Beachfur in honor of how much you liked the feeling of the beach sand on your fur; you having conveniently always known a bit about healing herbs and whatnot, unlike me and Sedgetail—you shall be our medicine cat.”

And so, from that day on, the three cats lived alongside each other and made their shelter inside a large cave system, using designated dens for their different ranks—although most of the time they slept side by side, afraid to be alone in this new world that was so strange and foreign to them.

Erin Crowley: The concept here is really strong, but the execution is definitely lacking. Tenses, grammar, etc are all off, with at least one or more errors per 'Page' on my phone. The writing style is almost broken- sentences move into each other awkwardly, and are filled with an excess of "filler words", lik...

genlynne2379: I read the other review of this book and I must say that I disagree with it wholeheartedly. I do not believe the author put the apostrophes in the names just to be unique, but because the characters are supposedly of a different race than humans. They are Anmah. They should have different names a...
