I’m completely and utterly trapped. My wings are pinned to my sides so I can’t fly, and the dust constantly falling into my eyes is irritating.
Shift back, my dragon, Star huffs, prodding me to take back over. I mutter out a curse.
Why didn’t you say that an hour ago? I ask, exasperatedly.
Um..... Star shrugs, struggling to pull her wings free. I chuckle to myself, and Star sends me a menacing glare, the subconscious me and Star having a staring contest. Star’s amber-golden eyes bore into my hazel-golden eyes.
Star sighs and breaks away, scratching feebly at the pit. We were lucky our wings were drawn in when we fell, if they were flared they surely would have broken.
How did we get into this mess again? I ask, Star trying to pull her talons free.
We are in werewolf territory. Star responds snarkily.
That’s because we’re getting revenge. They killed mother and father! I snarl. Star is silent, her attempts at escaping finally stopping.
Wait.... if we gain their trust and are accepted into their Pack.... we could tear their Pack apart from the inside out!
A slight malicious snarl crosses my lips.
Yes, that's what mother and father would have wanted. I respond.
Suddenly, the pattering of feet catches my attention, and I stiffen.
“Sir, Alpha, I think we’ve caught something!”
We’re shifting back. I shift back quickly, before pulling on the clothes I had managed to stuff beneath one of my scales under my neck.
They won’t know what we smell like, they haven’t seen a dragon since Alpha Viktor killed the last of the Winged Auras. Star says.
“Alpha, we know that dragons have been extinct for decades, why are we trying to find them?” a voice complains.
“Stop complaining, Cade!” Another voice commands. His voice oozes authority. No doubt that’s the Alpha.
The one we kill. Star says, nodding her giant head approvingly.
“Beta Jaeyln, check the trap.”
“Yes, Alpha. Who’s down there?!” I look up just as another head peers down.
“Um, hello?” I call, forcing myself to look confused and innocent.
“Um, Alpha, Sir. We have a problem. There’s no dragon, only a girl.” Jaeyln mutters, and he pulls back, and another head takes it’s place.
“Who are you, and why do you trespass on my territory?”
The blue eyes glaring down at me are somewhat intimidating, but within the back of my mind, Star hisses and draws herself up to her highest, scales and wings flaring.
The blue eyes narrow, and suddenly the face disappears.
“Get that rope and hold on!”
Moments later, a massive wolf comes soaring down into the pit and lands beside me.
He grunts, jerking his head.
He wants you to get on his back. Star says.
There is no way I’m getting on my parents’ murderer’s sons back. I spit back.
Star snarls at me, and grudgingly, I mount the massive black wolf.
He gets to his feet, and I let out a startled noise, lurching forward to wrap my arms around the wolf's neck, burying my hands in his thick mane of fur.
The wolf's body shudders slightly, and I can feel his muscles ripple beneath his skin. The wolf trots back, before running forward and taking a huge leap. He howls through a mouthful of rope, and right as he lands, there’s a sharp tug and he’s pulled up by the rope.
I lean forward, clutching the fur at his neck, and press myself against the wolf’s rigid spine as he clambers over the lip of the pit. I quickly dismount, and am surrounded by soldiers.
I could disintegrate them in a moment. I think harshly.
And that would give them a fully acceptable excuse to kill you. Star adds.
The wolf shifts back and immediately, a soldier drapes a large cape around the shifter’s shoulders.
“Alpha,” the soldier bows respectfully. The Alpha ties and buttons his cape up, and regards me with a cool gaze.
“Who are you and why do you trespass in my territory?” He demands.
Welcoming. Star comments dryly.
“My family has gone missing,” I say, lifting my eyes up to appear innocent. The Alpha’s face softens for a fraction of an instant.
“What’s your name?” He asks.
Star! Quick! What’s a non dragon name? I panic.
Leila! Luna- wait no that’s the Alpha’s mate.... er..... Moon! Rose! Crystal! Fred!
Star. Really? Fred? That's not even a female name!!
I start as the Alpha arches an eyebrow, obviously waiting for my answer.
“Um. I... I don’t....”
“Did you hit your head on the way down?” He frowns, looking concerned.
Say yes! Star yells.
“Y-yes. The last thing I remember is that I was running and I just fell.”
“But how did a girl as petite as you fall through that trap?” The Alpha asks.
“I’m not sure.”
“Alpha, let’s not pester the poor girl.” Someone else steps forward and slings his arm across my shoulder casually.
A low growl escapes the Alpha’s threat, and I suppress my own growl. Get this vermin off of me!!
“Beta Jaelyn.” The Alpha says tightly. “I’m in charge here. Lead the troop back to the Pack.” The Beta nods and departs, ordering the small group to turn around. It doesn’t matter if they leave. Star’s warned me about two guards up in a tree who won’t be leaving anytime soon.
After a few minutes after the Beta and he soldiers disappear, the Alpha whirls on me, pinning me against a tree.
“What are you, exactly? My soldiers and Beta may believe you’re innocent but I don’t! So tell me! What are you?”
