Chapter 11

Emily just sat on her bed when someone knocked on her bedroom door. “Come in.” she called out as she turned on the lamp that was sitting on her bedside table.

Karissa opened the door slightly and peeked her head in. “Is it alright if I come in?” Emily nodded.

Karissa chuckled as she walked in and closed the door behind her. “Good because I was going to come in any way.”

“Is there something that you wanted from me?” Emily asked as she gulped nervously.

Karissa smiled. “Yes, I wanted to talk to you.”

“About what?”

Karissa slowly made her way to the bed and sat down next to Emily. “I wanted to tell you about my past. Why I was considered a traitor to my kind. I know that you wanted to know.” She sighed as she pulled up her shirt and showed Emily her back. Emily sucked in a deep breath as she saw her back was full of scars and scars of lashes. Between those long and deep lashes were two large white scars.

“The white scars that you see used to be where my wings were. They are what’s left.” Karissa said as she pulled down her shirt. “It all started years before you were even born. I was living with the Spearkanans. We weren’t like the Karannas who cared for one another. But if one of our own got hurt or killed we would hunt down those responsible and destroy them. I didn’t know any other way of living before I met Joshua. He taught me life other than violence. I know sometimes I can be a bit frightening so you must forgive me.”

Karissa smiled slightly before continuing with her story. “I was killing his kind when he found me. I knew who he was. Everyone knew who Joshua was. I wanted to kill him but for some reason, I couldn’t make myself do it. He could see it as well. He knew that I was different even if I didn’t know at the time. Joshua offered me a chance at a new life.” Karissa paused and shook her head. “Being the stubborn person I was I declined his offer and spread out my wings to fly away when he stopped me. ‘I won’t give up on you Karissa. There is still a chance for you.’ I didn’t even look at him before flying back home, leaving him to clean up my dirty work. There was a part of me deep down in my black, cold heart that was curious to find out what he had meant.” She laughed. “I guess that piqued my curiosity.” Karissa stood from the bed and turned to face Emily. “This is the part where things get ugly. Are you sure you still want to hear it?” she watched as Emily nodded eagerly.

“Alright. I had a friend who was also the son of our leader Reiki. His name was Zeke. One night he kept following me and pestering me. He could tell that something was different about me. I couldn’t tell him that our enemy was coming here to see me. I tried to dismiss him but he wouldn’t leave. It was too late anyway. Joshua was already in the room waiting for me. When he spotted Joshua he tried to attack him but I stopped him. I tried to explain to Zeke that he was offering me a deal but he wouldn’t listen.

Karissa brought her arms to hug her chest. “He tried to attack Joshua but I stopped him by jumping out in front of him. He growled and said that I was crazy to trust the enemy. He would stop me from making this mistake. Even getting the guards.” Karissa looked down towards the ground. “I didn’t think of my next action as he turned his back to me to open the door Ignoring Joshua who was warning me not to do anything rash I rushed in front of him and pushed him away from the door.”

Emily saw that she was struggling to continue with the story. “It’s okay Karissa. You don’t need to tell me.”

Karissa shook her head. “No, I do. You need to hear it.”

“You killed him didn’t you?”

Karissa nodded. “I didn’t mean too but that’s what ended up happening. I held him in my arms as he slowly died. Joshua tried to take me away but I wouldn’t leave him. The guards came in and saw Joshua and I with Zeke in my arms.

Joshua vanished before they could attack him. They ripped me off of Zeke before I could try and save him and struck me across the face calling me a traitor to my own race. I screamed as they dragged me by my hair away from Zeke. The Spearkanans who had caught me brought me unto Reiki with Zeke slowly dying. He died right in front of me before they could do anything.”

Karissa shook her head. “They were angry beyond belief. They took pleasure in torturing me and even called me a traitor and a spy saying that I was working for the enemy. They ended up ripping my wings off my back and throwing me in a dungeon chaining me to the wall.” Karissa smirked. “I stayed down there for about a week with no food or water before Joshua came for me. I was very weak when he came. They had beaten me and used every torture technique that you can think of on me for what I did. Joshua offered me to take me away and this time, I agreed. I knew that I would die if I stayed where I was. I had no place with my own kind anymore. He healed me of my injuries. He apologized for not being able to restore my wings but I didn’t care. That was years ago and I have been living with him ever since. He is like a brother to me.”

“I’m so sorry that you had to go through that,” Emily said.

Karissa waved her off. “It’s all in the past. I no longer care.”

“Thank you for telling me Karissa.”

Karissa gave her a small smile before turning to the door. “Try and get some sleep.” She said as she walked out of the room closing the door as she did so.

Emily laid down on her bed after Karissa left the room. She stared at the ceiling as she thought about what was shared. Eventually, she slowly fell asleep.
