Chapter 12

The next day Emily was awoken by Hannah roughly shaking her. “Come on get up sleepy head.”

Emily groggily sat up in bed and rubbed her sleepy eyes. “Hannah?”

Hannah giggled. “You’re so cute when you’re sleepy. Come on get up Sleeping Beauty.”

“What time is it?”

“It’s time to get up. Come on Joshua is going to teach you how to transform today.”

That woke Emily up. “He is?”

Hannah nodded as Emily jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom. "We’ll meet you outside,” Hannah called after her as she walked out of the room.

Emily rushed out of her room after she had gotten herself ready.

She found Karissa sitting on the couch in the living room reading a book. “Joshua and Hannah are both outside waiting for you,” Karissa said not looking up from her book. “Good luck with your transformation training today. I hope it all goes well.”

“You’re not coming?”

Karissa shook her head. “My powers do not lie in transformation. Although sometimes I wish that it does. I will not be of any use to you. I will be helping you with something else later though. Hurry up and go. You better get some training done.” Emily nodded in agreement and rushed out the door.

Joshua and Hannah were waiting for Emily when she walked out of the cabin. “Good. You’re finally here,” Joshua said as Emily climbed down the steps. “Now Hannah has already told you what we are going to do?” Emily nodded.

“Good. Now, not all Karannas can change their forms like you can. Hannah like some of our kind can change only a small amount of her features. I unlike the Changelings can change my form for a brief time. I can’t stay in that form forever. You will be able to with some practice. Like flying, it will be natural for you.”

"So when do we do this?” Emily asked.

“For you to fully change you will need to focus on what you want to change into,” Joshua explained. “Focus on that and you will shift into what you wanted.” Joshua raised his hand and Emily watched as it shifted into a lion’s paw.

Emily looked at it in amazement before it shifted back into a hand.

“That was just one part of your body,” Joshua explained. “When you get stronger you’ll be able to transform your entire body into anything you want.”

“I do have a question. When will I learn physical attacks? Like what you and Karissa did to those Spearkanans. Don’t get me wrong I want to learn how to change my body. Do I have the power like you do?”

“You don’t hold the power to perform energy blasts…” Joshua started to reply.

“She might.” Hannah butted in. “You never know?”

"She doesn’t!” Joshua said glaring at Hannah.

“Then how do I attack when I need too?” Emily asked.

“The legend says that the Changelings can control the elements. Earth, fire, water, wind plus ice and electricity. We would need to train you to master it. You also have super speed like Hannah, Karissa and myself.” He clapped his hands together. “Alright, I want you to focus on changing your hand into a lion’s paw.”

Emily nodded as she lifted her hand up to eye level and closed her eyes to focus on changing her hand.

“Visualize the thing that you want to shift into,” Joshua explained. “See it in your mind. Block out the sounds that you hear. When you become a master you will be able to shift without difficulty. Do you have a clear visual?”

Emily frowned as she tried to focus on her hand. “There are too many sounds around me,” Emily said as she opened her eyes. “I can’t consecrate.”

Joshua turned to Hannah. “Do you mind getting Karissa for me?” Hannah nodded as she ran inside.

“Karissa?” Emily asked curiously. “What is she going to do?”

“Just wait,” Joshua said as Karissa and Hannah walked out together.

“What’s up?” Karissa asked.

“Karissa I need you to do me a favour. I need you to block Emily’s hearing from sounds other than mine or Hannah.”

"What?” Emily asked alarmed.

“You need to focus Emily. Trust me Emily. This is the way to do it.”

Karissa smiled as she went over to Emily. “Can do.”

Emily took a step back. “W-what are you going to do?”

“I’m just going to block your hearing,” Karissa explained. “I need to control your mind for me to do that, though. Forget about the training you did.”

Emily looked to Joshua and Hannah who nodded in encouragement. Emily looked back to Karissa and took a deep breath. “Alright do it.”

“Do not fight me. I need you to focus on my eyes.” Karissa said as she placed her hands on Emily’s head. Emily did as she was told and focused on Karissa’s yellow eyes. She felt something tugging against her mind and immediately struggled to fight against it. “Do not fight me Emily. I need to enter your mind. I need to block your hearing for a short while. It only temporary.”

“Let her in Emily,” Hannah said.

Emily took another deep breath as she slowly gave in to Karissa. She felt the tugging getting stronger as she allowed Karissa into her mind. She could hear all sounds around her slowly drift away and felt at peace from the loss.

“Is it done?” Joshua asked as he looked at Emily’s dazed and peaceful face.

“Let’s see,” Karissa replied. “Emily, can you hear me?” Emily stared at Karissa’s open mouth and frowned slightly. “She can’t hear me,” Karissa said turning back to Joshua. “You try.” “Emily, can you hear me?”

Emily nodded. “Yes.”

“Can you hear Karissa?”

Emily looked to Karissa as she saw her mouth moving up and down. She turned back to Joshua and shook her head. “No.” “Good. Now I want you to focus on changing your hand into a lion’s paw.”

Emily nodded as she raised her right hand. She closed her eyes as she concentrated.

Emily felt fur all over her body and felt herself go down on all fours and felt a long tail grow behind her.

“Joshua,” Hannah whispered alarmed at the now mountain lion in front of her.

“Stay behind me Hannah,” Joshua said.

Emily opened her eyes and growled when she saw Joshua, Karissa and Hannah standing in front of her.

“Why is she growling?” Hannah asked nervously.

“Her brain is an animal as well,” Joshua explained. “Her powers are stronger than we thought. I didn’t think about her brain going animal as well.”

“What do we do?” Karissa asked.

“We need to let her see that we aren’t a threat,” Joshua explained. “She’ll eventually change back.” He looked down at Emily and took a step forward. Emily growled dangerously. Hannah gasped and grabbed hold of his sleeve. “Be careful Joshua.”

“Emily, can you hear me? It’s Joshua. I need you to calm down and change back.” Emily snarled.

“I don’t think reasoning is going to work,” Karissa said. “You’re going to have to put her to sleep, Joshua.”

Joshua nodded. "I know.” Emily turned to Karissa.

Karissa glared at her. “Don’t even think about it,” she growled.

“Karissa don’t,” Joshua warned. “We don’t want to antagonize her.”

“What do we do then?” Karissa demanded. “We can’t let her attack anyone.”

“I don’t want anyone to get hurt either. Can you control her mind?”

“I’ve never controlled an animal’s mind before.”

“This isn’t an animal Karissa,” Hannah said. “This is Emily. This is my best friend.”

Karissa gritted her teeth together. “Alright.” She looked directly at Emily.

Emily started hissing and clawing at the air as Karissa tried to enter into her mind.

“Karissa what are you doing?” Joshua demanded as he watched Emily howl at nothing.

“I’m trying to gain access to her mind but it’s difficult.” Karissa frowned deeply as she concentrated. “Something is blocking me.”

Emily turned to Karissa and growled before jumping onto Karissa and dragged her to the ground. Hannah screamed as Emily bit into Karissa’s arm.

“Joshua knock her out!” She yelled as Karissa screamed when Emily clawed her back.

Joshua ran over to Emily and pushed her away from Karissa’s bleeding form.

He tackled Emily to the ground before she could attack her again. “Emily listen to my voice. Sleep deeply.” Joshua demanded.

Her roars slowly disappeared as she slowly fell unconscious in his arms. He placed her body on the ground and watched as Emily slowly changed back into her human form fully naked on the ground.

Joshua looked away as Hannah ran over to Karissa who was groaning in pain. "Karissa oh my goodness.”

“Hannah take Emily inside and get her dressed. Put her on the bed.”

“How long will she be asleep for?” Hannah asked as she moved over to Emily.

“Until I wake her. Take her to bed while I care for Karissa.” He turned back to Karissa as Hannah left with Emily in her arms.

“J-Joshua. I-I’m s-sorry.” Karissa said weakly.

“Don’t speak.” Joshua hushed her. “There is nothing to be sorry about. Let’s have a look at these injuries.” He grabbed her arm and looked at the wound ignoring the blood. “I’ll be able to heal this with no trouble.”

Karissa smiled through her pain. “Just like old times huh?" Joshua chuckled as he placed his hand over Karissa’s injured arm and slowly healed it. “I need to check your back. This might hurt.”

Joshua moved to Karissa’s back and lifted her shirt up. Karissa cried out in pain as he did so. “I’m sorry Karissa.” He said as he ripped the shirt from her back and looked at the deep wound. “I’ll be able to heal it but it will leave scars.”

“That’s fine,” Karissa replied flinching. “It will add to the ones I already have.”

Joshua placed his hands over the long, deep wounds and healed them. “They’ll hurt for a while. All we can do is wrap them in bandages.”

Hannah came out of the cabin when Joshua was done.
“Hannah can you take Karissa to her room so she can rest please,” Joshua asked as he stood. “I’ll go see how Emily is doing.”

Hannah nodded as she walked over to Karissa.

Joshua walked into Emily’s room and went over to the bed where she was now fully dressed and sleeping deeply and peacefully.

‘I wasn’t expecting her to be that strong.’ Joshua thought to himself. ‘That was amazing though. I wonder what else she can do and exactly how powerful she’ll become.’

He bent down and touched her forehead. “Wake.” Joshua sat in the chair next to the bed as Emily started groaning a moment later. "Emily, can you open your eyes for me?” Joshua asked gently.

Emily slowly opened her eyes and turned to Joshua. He noticed that she was looking weak. “Joshua?”

“Hey, how are you doing?”

"Weak,” Emily whispered gently. “My body won’t respond to me.”

“Do you remember anything?”

Emily nodded. “Yes. I remember everything after I changed. I-I remember attacking Karissa.” Her eyes widened in fear. “How is she? I couldn’t control myself.”

“She’s fine. She’s resting. You need to get your strength back up as well.” He put his hand to her forehead and watched as her eyes grew wide in fear.

“I don’t want to sleep.”

Joshua gently hushed her. “Sleep is what’s best for you right now. You have drained your strength and need to build it back up. It’s why you can’t move. Don’t be scared Emily. I am here with you. Sleep deeply.”

He watched as Emily slowly fell back under his strong control as she was brought back under the deep sleep.

Joshua bent down and kissed her forehead. “I will see you tomorrow.” He stood and walked out of the room.

Hannah waited for Joshua outside Emily’s room. “How is she?” she asked as Joshua walked out.

“Resting. She was very weak.”

“I don’t think we’ll be letting her do that for a while.” Hannah smiled slightly.

Joshua shook his head. “No, it’s too dangerous for now.”

“You know that she would want to do it again. She won’t give up.”

Joshua sighed. “I know."
