Joshua opened the front door and Emily peered over his shoulder and saw a squad of grinning Spearkanans outside waiting for them. Emily whimpered when she remembered the last time she faced these gruesome beasts.
‘It will all be alright…Joshua will protect me’, she said to herself.
“Joshua it’s so good to see you again.” One of the Spearkanans growled.
“What are you doing here and how did you find us?” Joshua demanded. “Talk Nail, before I do something to you and your kin.”
Nail hissed at the threat. “We have simply come for the Changeling. Our Master Reiki has asked for us to bring her to him personally.” He looked to Emily and grinned. Emily shrank back at the grin. "She looks delicious and weak.”
Another said as he licked his lips. “Tasty.”
Nail growled at the foolish Spearkanans. “She is not for eating you fool.”
“I will not let Reiki kill the Changeling,” Joshua said narrowing his eyes. “I will protect her with my life.”
Nail chuckled. “That is eventually going to be your downfall.” He flicked his wrist. “Take the girl.”
The Spearknanas growled as they charged towards Joshua.
“Joshua!” Emily screamed as she took a step forward.
Nisha grabbed hold of Emily and held her back. “No don’t.”
“But he needs our help.”
Nisha shook her head. “Not from you.” She looked to Hannah. “Help him.”
Hannah nodded as she let Karissa go who was hissing. “Karissa don’t even think about it. Fight your instincts.”
“What’s wrong with her?” Emily asked.
“Her Spearkanans side is telling her to fight,” Hannah said as she watched Karissa’s body shake. “She’s trying to fight it but I don’t know how long that will last.”
“Right Hannah you need to go and help Joshua,” Nisha said. “I will stay here with Karissa and Emily.”
Hannah nodded as she ran off right into a Spearkanans who had taken a chance and stalked away from Joshua with several of his kin. Hannah lifted her hand to try and stop the four Spearkanans but not before they surrounded her while one grabbed her hand.
“Hannah!” Emily screamed.
One of the Spearkanans looked to Emily as she screamed and grinned as he pulled Hannah close to his body. “If you want me to release her then come with us Changeling.”
“Don’t do it, Emily.” Hannah cried before the Spearkanans placed his hand over her mouth.
Nisha stepped forward in front of Emily. “I won’t let that happen. If you want the Changeling you’re going to have to go through me first.”
One of the Spearkanans chuckled as he raised his hand towards Nisha. “That can be arranged.” He said as he let loose a beam of green energy to Nisha.
Emily screamed as the energy shot through Nisha’s chest. Nisha gagged in pain as she slowly turned to Emily before falling to the ground.
“No!” Karissa, Joshua, and Emily yelled together when Nisha hit the ground.
Karissa jumped up and hissed dangerously at the Spearkanans.
One of them grinned at her. “Hello, Karissa the traitor. It’s good to see you after all these years.”
“Arsen,” Karissa replied through a hiss. “You’re looking as horrible as ever.”
Arsen chuckled in delight. “Why don’t you come and say that to my face. Or has years of living with the enemy made you a weakling?”
“I will show you who is the weakling,” Karissa said as she charged at Arsen raising her hand as she did so and sent out a blast of energy at him.
Arsen grinned and ducked as the energy beam went straight past him hitting another Spearkanans in the process. The Spearkanans who was hit exploded in a cloud of dust.
Arsen barely looked behind him as Karissa attacked him.
He chuckled as he dodged her attacks. “You are weaker than I remember. It’s pathetic.” He kicked Karissa sending her to the ground on her stomach.
Karissa tried to stand from the ground but Arsen came up and slammed his foot against her back. Karissa screamed in pain as she was forced to stay underneath Arsen’s foot.
“Pathetic.” Arsen spat at her. “You don’t deserve to live. How about I put you out of your misery?” He removed his foot from her back and bent down to grab Karissa’s long hair and pulled her up into the air. Karissa screamed in pain as he raised her by her hair.
“Karissa!” Emily cried out as she took a step forward.
“No Emily don’t!” Karissa said through her tears. “Run away! Get away from here.”
Arsen turned to Emily and gave her a big toothy grin. “Ah yes, I almost forgot about you, Changeling. Just stay there while I kill this weakling. Then you will be next.”
Hannah cried out through the Spearkanans hand over her mouth.
Arsen turned to the Spearkanans who held Hannah captive. “Brog shut her up. We don’t want any distractions.” B
rog nodded as he looked down at Hannah and slammed his hand on the back of her head. Hannah widened her eyes before she went limp in the Spearkanans arms. Brog chuckled as he put Hannah’s limp, unconscious body over his shoulder. “Hannah!” Emily screamed as her body shook with anger.
Arsen turned back to Emily and snickered. “Reiki will enjoy controlling her mind.” He tilted his head. “Does that anger you Changeling? You know he might even make her fight one of us to the death. Although I think the odds she has against one of us is pretty slim.” He shrugged.
Emily suddenly let out a scream as lightning hit the ground next to her feet.
Arsen widened his eyes before turning back to Brog and two others. “Hurry and get back to the Master. Make sure you give that girl to him. She may be of some use to us.”
The Spearkanans nodded as they ran off. Arsen turned back and took a step back in shock when he saw Emily’s body change.
Joshua had finished with his fight and looked over at Emily as harsh wind suddenly appeared around them. “Emily!” Joshua tried to cry over the wind.
Emily barely heard him over the red hot burning rage she felt inside her. She didn’t realize it, but her body was slowly changing. Large black spots bigger than Joshua’s appeared all over her body.
One of her eyes changed to bright yellow with a tinge of blue while the other turned into forest green with a tinge of yellow and blue. Her skin turned to white and green. Large white wings appeared behind her back with a long white spotty tail appeared behind her as well.
Karissa widened her eyes in amazement. “Her true form.”
“Interesting.” Arsen spat tightening his grip on Karissa. “Very interesting. Reiki won’t like this but I think he’s up for the challenge. He will enjoy ending your life.”
Emily narrowed her eyes at Arsen as her wings stretched away from her body. “Let Karissa go and get away from here or else.”
"Or else what?” Arsen asked with a growl. “What are you going to do?”
"Allow me to demonstrate,” Emily replied as she flicked her wrist at Arsen.
Razor sharp ice flew out of Emily’s hand and cut through the hand that gripped Karissa’s hair. Arsen cried out in pain as his hand was sliced off. Karissa fell to the ground in a heap by his feet.
“If you don’t get out of here I’ll remove the other one as well.”
Arsen growled. “You haven’t seen the last of me.” He said as he ran off.
Joshua came running over to Karissa as the wind started getting stronger around them. “Are you alright?” he asked as he kneeled down beside her.
Karissa nodded. “I’m fine.” She looked to Emily to see her body trembling. “You need to calm her down. In this state, she might destroy us all.”
Joshua nodded as he stood and slowly made his way to Emily.
“Emily,” Joshua called over the wind to her.
Emily opened her eyes to look at Joshua. “You shouldn’t be here. Leave me.”
Joshua shook his head. “I am here to protect you remember? I am not leaving you.” Using his speed he flashed by Emily’s side.
Emily shook her head as she felt her hair dance in the strong wind. “I am too out of control. I’m dangerous.”
“Not to me,” Joshua said as he grabbed her arms and pulled Emily in and kissed her on the mouth.
He felt the wind slowly disappearing around them as he kissed Emily. Joshua pulled away from the kiss to look at Emily’s frightened eyes. He noticed that her body did not change back.
“I’m here for you Emily,” Joshua said gently. “I’ll always be here for you.”
Emily sighed before falling into his arms. “Thank you.” She whispered.
“Joshua,” Karissa called out behind him. Joshua turned to see Karissa kneeling on the ground beside Nisha.
“Oh no.” he said as he went to them.
He put Emily down next to Karissa as he went to the other side of Nisha. Joshua looked at the deep hole in her stomach.
"She’s not going to make it,” Karissa confirmed. Joshua shook his head.
Nisha started coughing out blood. “I’m sorry.”
Joshua smiled as he grabbed her hand. “You have nothing to be sorry about.” He looked to Karissa. “Take Emily inside.” Karissa nodded as she grabbed Emily and walked inside the cabin.
