Chapter 8

The next day Emily slowly woke to find herself on an unfamiliar bed, in a room that she had never seen before. She found that she was also alone in the room. Emily looked out the locked window to find that it was late afternoon. The events of yesterday suddenly came back to her and she sat up fast on her bed. She looked down at her hands and sighed in relief when she saw that they weren’t covered in dark spots.

‘Where am I? What happened to me?’ she thought as she looked around the room. Emily could hear loud voices coming from outside her bedroom door. Her breathing started picking up as her heart rate did. ‘I-I need to hide.’ She whimpered in fear and ran over to the bathroom door and closed it behind her.

J and Karissa walked in a moment later.

"Give her that tray of food. I’m sure that she’ll be starving when she wakes.” J said.

Karissa stopped when she saw that the bed was empty. J followed her gaze and gasped when he saw that the bed was empty. “Where did she go?” he asked as he looked around the room.

“The bathroom,” Karissa said as she set the tray down.“Her scent went in there.”

“I’ll go,” J said as he slowly made his way to the bathroom door.

He slowly opened the door and peeked in. “Emily are you in here?” He could hear her panicked breathing.

“Go away.”

He walked into the bathroom and saw her curled in a ball in the tub. "It’s okay,” J said as he slowly made his way to Emily. “I’m not here to hurt you.”

Emily shook her head as she whimpered in fear. “I said go away.”

J shook his head. “I can’t do that. Just calm down. You’re safe. Nothing is going to hurt you.”

"Where…. Where am I? Who are you? Where did you take me? Where are my parents?”

He put his arms out in front of him. “I know you’re scared but I will explain everything to you after you have gotten out of the tub. I need you to calm down first. We are not going to hurt you.”

Emily gulped nervously as J made his way over to her. J could see that she wasn’t going to settle down anytime soon.

‘I need to put her into a light sleep.’ He bent down in front of Emily and carefully placed his hand on her head. Emily flinched but did not pull away. ‘Sleep.’ He watched as Emily slowly closed her eyes as she went to sleep.

J grabbed her body and walked out of the bathroom. Karissa was still waiting outside when he placed Emily on the bed. “Karissa maybe you should wait outside,” J said when he noticed Emily slowly stirring. “I don’t want her to panic seeing you. I need to explain things to her first.”

Karissa huffed before walking out the door.

J watched as Emily slowly woke on the bed. She gasped when she saw J next to her and moved back away from him.

“I’m sorry I had to put you to sleep. It was the only way to calm you down.” He looked at her scared eyes. “I think it’s time that I introduce myself to you. My name is Joshua. I am here to protect and to guide you.”

“P-Protect me from what?” Emily asked. “Why do I need protecting?”

Joshua put his hand up to stop her. “I will explain everything to you.”

"What were those things that attacked me?”

"Spearknanas,” Joshua replied. “They are a ruthless race serving only one man. They were sent to track you down and your family.”

"Why am I involved in this?”

“You are special Emily. You are a Changeling. A child that has special abilities to change anything about her body. You can fly and have super speed like I do. Possibly much more than that.”

“So you’re like me?”

“Kind of. I’m a Karannas. As you can see I’m different from the Spearkanans. I can also change my form but I have other powers as well. I’m a little stronger than the Changelings. I am the only one who is.”

“So there are others like me?” Emily asked. “Is that what Karissa is?”

Joshua shook his head. “Karissa is a Spearknanas. You can tell the difference between us. And no you are the first of your kind.”

“Why isn’t she like the rest of them?”

“Because she is a traitor to her kind. She was forced to run away.”

“What happened to my parents? Why are they involved in this?”

Joshua sighed. “Your Mother used to be a Spearknanas and your Father was a Karannas. They fell in love and eventually had you. It is forbidden to fall for each other and they knew that. They decided to run away so they can be together. You are half Spearknanas, half Karannas but full Changeling.”

Emily gasped in shock. “But they look nothing like them.” “That’s because the more they took on human form the less of their natural selves was visible. The Spearkanans took them and now hold them captive.”

Emily shook her head as she absorbed this information. “This is unbelievable.”

Joshua nodded. “I know that this is quite a shock to you. It’s all true, though. Your parents knew that one day the leader of the Spearkanans would come for you. They tried their best to keep you hidden and to give you a normal life. There was an old legend which said that one day he would be defeated by someone powerful. You are this person.”

"Who is the leader?”

“A man who years ago was once my good friend. Reiki. He knows what you are capable of and wants you destroyed. He doesn’t want the old legend to be real. You are the only one strong enough to defeat him. Right now he holds your parents captive.”

“How do I defeat him? I’m not strong.”

“That is why Karissa and I will train you to develop your powers to help you become the Changeling.”

“Those black spots then….”

“That is part of who you are.” He looked at her carefully. “Are you ready to see Karissa?”

Emily gulped and nodded nervously. “Can’t she hide her appearance?”

“She can but it takes too much energy to do so. You need to get used to her appearance. She isn’t so scary once you get to know her.” He turned to the door. “Karissa you can come in now.”

Emily looked to the door as it opened and watched as Karissa walked in. She slowly walked over to Joshua’s side and looked down at Emily. “Hello, Emily.”

Emily gulped again. “H-hello Karissa.”

Karissa chuckled in amusement. “There is no need for you to be scared. I won’t bite.” She turned to Joshua. “When can she start training?”

“Tomorrow. I want her well rested before we start.” He looked to Karissa. “Are you ready to train her?”

Karissa nodded. “Wait you’re going to train me?”

"Yes. I’m going to teach you how to block the Spearkanans from controlling and entering your mind. You need to build up your mind to be able to block them out.”

“Am I able to do that since I’m half Spearkanans?”

Karissa shrugged. “Probably. You can’t use this ability on your own kind, though. So if you do have the ability you won’t be able to try it on me. Only Reiki can and I have no idea how he is able to do it.”

“What about my transformation abilities? When will I learn that?”

"Soon,” Joshua replied. “I want you to focus on strengthening your mind first.”

“There’s one thing that I don’t get, though,” Emily said. “You said that Reiki knew about the legend from years ago. How is that possible?”

Joshua looked at her sternly. “We are immortal.”

“Immortal.” Emily gasped as she widened her eyes in shock. “Does that mean…. Am I?”

Joshua nodded. “You are.”

"Wow.” Emily breathed.

"Do you want to come out and eat something?” Joshua asked as he looked at the plate of cold, uneaten food. Emily nodded as she stood from the bed and walked out with Joshua and Karissa.

Emily sat down eating her dinner at the table with Joshua. She looked over at Karissa who was quietly reading a book. “So how powerful are you at controlling minds?” she asked Karissa.

Karissa smirked as she set down her book. “You will find out tomorrow. And just to let you know I won’t go easy on you.” She wiggled her eyebrows playfully.

“Karissa,” Joshua warned.

Karissa looked at Joshua innocently before going back to her book.

Joshua turned back to Emily’s empty plate. “Have you finished?” Emily nodded as Joshua grabbed the plate and walked into the kitchen to place it in the sink.

“I think that you should get an early night,” Joshua said as he walked out of the kitchen. “You’re going to start practice very early tomorrow.”

“I don’t think I can. I’m not even tired.”

“Oh boy,” Karissa mumbled as she tried to hide a chuckle.

"I will help you with that,” Joshua replied ignoring Karissa. “Let’s go to your room.”

“You mean that you’re going to put me to sleep with your abilities?”

Joshua laughed. “I knew that you would figure it out eventually. Yes, I’m going to do that. Don’t be scared. Let’s go.” Emily gulped before following him to her room.

Emily and Joshua walked into her room. Joshua closed the door behind him and turned to Emily.

“Lie down on your bed.” Emily moved to her bed without saying anything and lay down.

Joshua walked over to her and sat down on the chair next to her bed. He could see that she was nervous and placed his hand softly on her arm. “There is no need to be nervous Emily. It won’t hurt. You won’t feel a thing.” Emily nodded as she took a deep breath to calm herself.

Joshua moved his hand to Emily’s forehead. “I’m going to put you into a deep sleep. You won’t be able to wake up until tomorrow morning. Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

‘Sleep deeply.’ Joshua thought. ‘Your mind is going deeper and deeper until your mind is empty. Your body is getting heavier as well.’

Joshua watched as Emily slowly closed her eyes as she slowly went into a deep sleep. His attention shifted from Emily to shouts outside the bedroom door.

“You can’t go in there. Stay away.” Karissa shouted at someone.

“I must go in!” another was shouting as they stomped down the hall. “I need to see her!”

"No!” Karissa yelled back. “You can’t!”

“Who is that?” Emily asked sleepily.

“Never mind about that right now Emily,” Joshua said gently. “Sleep.”

The door was suddenly kicked open and Karissa ran in with a visitor. Emily looked towards the door and gasped when she recognised who the visitor was.

“Hannah.” She breathed as she propped herself up on her elbows.

Joshua’s eyes widened and turned back to Emily. “Sleep deeply now.” Emily’s eyes rolled to the back of her head as she fell down on the bed and went into a deep sleep.

Joshua jumped up from the seat as soon as Emily was deeply asleep to face Hannah. “What are you doing here Hannah?”

Hannah looked down at Emily’s sleeping form on the bed. “Wake her up.”

Joshua shook his head. “No, she’s sleeping deeply and cannot be woken until tomorrow. I will say it again Hannah. What are you doing here? You weren’t meant to come.”

Hannah sighed. “I know but I went back to the house only to find that it wasn’t there. I was worried that something had happened.”

Joshua frowned in confusion. “What do you mean that it wasn’t there?”

“The Spearkanans blew her house and where I was stationed as well. I got the Grieves out of there before anything could happen to them. They are in a safe place.” She looked to Emily’s peaceful face. “You need to fill me in what happened after I left.”

Joshua sighed in annoyance. “I don’t need to tell you anything Hannah.”

“Tell me, Joshua!” Hannah said getting angry. “She was my Charge. I was supposed to look after her until the time was right. It was not my fault that I was sent away. That was all on you. Now tell me what happened!”

Joshua grunted. “Fine.” He turned to walk out the door with Karissa. “Follow me.” Hannah looked to Emily’s sleeping form before following Joshua out.

Joshua, Karissa and Hannah walked into the lounge room. Karissa went to sit on the couch to pull out her book as Joshua and Hannah walked over to the table to sit down. "So what happened?” Hannah asked.

“We were keeping track of her after you left but somehow we lost sight of Emily when she left your house. I eventually found her at the mall surrounded by Spearkanans. I managed to take them out while Emily escaped. She made it back at her house and that is when Karissa comes in.” he looked to Karissa who was still reading her book. “Karissa has told me that the Spearkanans that were at Emily’s house were controlling her mind when she barged in. Karissa was in her natural form when she killed them. Emily panicked when she saw Karissa and ran and hid. She fainted when Karissa found her. I came in soon after that and took Emily with us. And that is how we ended up here.”

Hannah slowly shook her head in disbelief. “I should have never left her. I should have just stayed put. If you hadn’t told me to drop and leave everything then none of this would be happening to her.”

"It would have happened sooner or later, Hannah,” Joshua replied. “Reiki wants her dead. We all know that. I needed you elsewhere.”

Hannah sighed as she looked down the hallway to Emily’s room. “I know.” She looked back to Joshua. “Do I have permission to stay?”

Joshua chuckled. “Yes, you have permission to stay. We are training Emily and I might need your help. She saw you before she fell asleep as well. You’ve got a lot of explaining to her tomorrow.”

Hannah grunted. “I know. That’s the part that I’m afraid of.” She stood and walked over to Joshua. “It’s good to see you again.”

Joshua smiled as he stood. “It’s good to see you too.” He said as he pulled her in for a hug.
