Kuekuatsu Chapter 5

F208

Clad with dark marble floors and tiled with onyx stoned walls. The Main lobby of the Onyx tower emanated with an aura of dark elegance. As soon as the wooden double doors closed behind her, Scarlet began walking through the spacious lobby. From the corner of her left eye, she could recognize various portraits that decorated a section of the wall, all of which were submitted by students of the Onyx castle. One portrait in particular was done by a close friend of hers; it depicted the frozen terrains of her homeland. Scarlet then passed through a circle of lounging chairs, surrounding a floor painting of a black scarab blessed with an amethyst aura. Ahead of her, Scarlet could see the hall way that leads to the castle dorm rooms, and on each side of the hall ways entrance were stairs to the second floor. The young fire mage veered toward the staircase on the right and arrived at the second floor. Sitting bored and aloof at her post, a front desk receptionist painted her nails with a light shade of purple, while unaware of the blood covered red head that was approaching her.

“Excuse me, where can I find Professor Spriggs?” She asked politely. “It’s urgent.”

With a bored expression still on her face, the receptionist’ eyes panned up to look at Scarlet, and when they did they widened in shock at the sight of dried blood, stained on her uniform and cloak. The woman dropped her brush as her mouth slightly opened before saying.

“Wha…What hap—”

“Please!” Scarlet interrupted. “There’s no time to explain, I need to know where Professor Spriggs is.”

“Oh…Y-Yes of course.” The receptionist replied as she regained her composure.

Scarlet watched as the woman pulled out a drawer from the file cabinet behind her, and then picked out a binder labeled, “Exam Room Schedule”. She then flipped through a few pages, used her forefinger to scan through the list of names, and eventually stopped when she found the correct information.

“Professor Maya Spriggs is currently overseeing an exam in room F208.” She said after reading the information.

“Okay, thank you very much.” Scarlet nodded, before walking toward the hall way on the right.

“Wait,” the receptionist stood up from her chair. “Shouldn’t you head to the infirmary first?” She asked.

“I’ll be fine!” Scarlet gave the woman a quick wave without looking back, and entered the hall way.

Classrooms that were filled with test taking students under the watchful eyes of their teachers were on each side of the hallway. Scarlet took a quick peek into some of those classrooms as she continued down the black stoned path. She half expected to see her friend Sally in one of those classrooms, because it was after 6.p.m. according to the wall clock she saw in the last room. Scarlet recalled the moment she last saw Sally, and how they discussed their schedules. Sally told her that she would be a part of the last batch of students, to take their finals at the end of the day. And since Sally was an Onyx castle student it made sense that she would be in one of those classrooms, but which one?

Focusing on the task at hand, Scarlet eventually reached the end of the black stoned hall, and turned left at the corner where a new red stoned hallway had begun. The red shaded color scheme of the hall exuded a fierce and bold atmosphere. Scarlet began checking each room numbers from left to right; glancing at the top of each door she passed by. It wasn’t until she reached halfway down the hall that Scarlet found the right room number. Scarlet then leaned against the door, and peered through the small square window and saw who was inside. There were about twenty-four students in rows of six who were focused on completing the work that was on their desk. While their instructor kept a watchful eye on them from the comfort of her own desk. Scarlet let out a sigh of relief when she found her, the woman in her late thirties with long jet black hair, fair skin, and a uniform similar to Scarlet’s, but with the word Professor embroidered in the left breast of the blazer. Scarlet raised the back of her right hand up to the door, and softly knocked three times. Two students who were closest to the door looked up when Scarlet knocked. The fire mage pointed toward the Professor, and hoped they understood what she wanted. One of the two raised their hand, and waited for Spriggs to call on them.

“Something wrong Jin-May?” Professor Spriggs asked. Her voice was light hearted, firm, and carried an accent.

“Scarlet’s outside, I think she wants to see you.” She answered after putting her scaly hand down.

“Scarlet?” Spriggs repeated the name in surprise as she rose from her seat.

The Professor quickly approached the door, and looked through the window to see one of her most talented students standing outside; wearing a blood stained uniform and cloak. Spriggs covered her mouth to silence her gasp as she examined Scarlet’s appearance. From the other side, the fire mage gestured her teacher to join her in the hallway. Professor Spriggs nodded in response, and then turned halfway to face the diligent test takers.

“Class,” She said aloud, grabbing their attention. “I am going to step out for a moment, everyone please continue your exams, and when you are done, place it upon my desk and wait for me to return.” She ordered before opening the door and closing it behind her.

“Scarlet, what in the name of Amaterasu has happened to you?!” Spriggs wanted to shout but managed to control her voice into a whisper. “Who did this?”

“I know you have a lot of questions.” Scarlet whispered back. “And I promise to tell you everything, but right now there’s someone that needs my help.”

The professor paused for a moment then asked, “Okay, what do you need me to do?”

“There’s a werewolf outside the southern entrance, his name is Kuekuatsu. I need you to let him in for me, so I can get him to the infirmary.”

“A werewolf? Why is he here? And what exactly have you gotten yourself into?”

“Professor, please! I need you to open the gate for him.”

“Before I do anything, I need you to tell me what’s going on. And why are you covered in blood?!” She whispered back, being careful not to yell.

Scarlet sighed, realizing that her professor would not back down.

“Okay look, it’s not my blood, it’s his. He got hurt when he saved me in the forest from another werewolf. So I brought him here so he can get medical attention, even though he said he’s fine. I just want to make sure he’s okay.”

“But what about you?” the professor stepped closer to Scarlet and put her hands on her shoulders. “Are you okay?”

“Yes Professor, I’m fine.” Scarlet nodded, appreciating her concern.

“But it wasn’t just an animal attack. There’s a lot more going on.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have reason to believe that someone has used the forbidden spell known as Dream Spark, on Kuekuatsu. It’s the reason why he came to save me.”

“Dream Spark?!” Spriggs could not believe what she heard. “Are you sure it was that spell?”

“Yes, it’s the only one that explains what happened.” Scarlet nodded.

“I know it sounds crazy but it’s true, and now I need your help to find out who used it, and why.”

“Scarlet….this….this is…” The professor sighed and rubbed her forehead. “For starters, I can’t guarantee that I can get your friend permission to enter the academy during these hours.”

“But you can do it right?”

“It’s...possible.”

“Okay, that’s good enough for me! Let’s go!” Scarlet grabbed her professor by the arm and began sprinting down the hall, with her professor trying to keep up.
