Chapter Sixteen: There is a first time for everything.

Anthony finally came back to consciousness three days later after he was safely back at the Seminary. His eyes slowly opened with him not recognizing where he was at first. He looked over to see Amanda was sleeping in the desk chair right next to him. Even though she was sleeping all cock eyed in that chair that didn’t stop him from thinking she looked like an angel. He was happy to have her back despite what trouble his actions might bring to him. He tried to sit up but his broken ribs hurt too badly for him to get up all the way. He let out a groan that Amanda noticed so she said, “You have three broken ribs. I wouldn’t suggest doing that on your own again.”

He laid his head back on the pillow he said, “I will need to get up. I have to use the bathroom something fierce.”

“I will get Jonathan to help you up. I am still pretty weak myself.” She started to get up when he reached for her to stop.

“Hold on a second babe.” His left hand grabbed his ribs as he said, “Man this hurts.” After wincing from the pain he finally mumbled out, “I love you.” A part of him wanted to say more but I love you pretty much summed up what he was thinking.

She closed her eyes staying silent for a moment before finally saying, “I tried to protect you from this-“

Anthony cut her off, “I know. I saw it all. Thank you for trying but from now on I need you to just be with me. It’s my job to protect you.” He laughed.

“Alright. Hun. I love you.” She leaned in and kissed him.

Anthony breathed in her scent and realized that he missed that part more than he thought he would. She always smelled so good, some combination of lilacs and lavender. He sighed as she got up to leave. She returned a minute later with Jonathan in tow. He helped Anthony slowly sit up and get out of bed. Anthony almost fell when he tried to put weight on his legs but Jonathan stopped him. Slowly Anthony got the strength to stand up while holding onto Jonathan and soon they were on their way to the bathroom. “So how did the battle go? I take it we won because I probably wouldn’t be here if we didn’t.” Anthony asked after finishing his business.

Jonathan tilted his head to side then said, “We took some losses but overall it wasn’t that bad. We secured the state hospital in a matter of twenty minutes. The Death Knights didn’t even put up much of a fight. It seemed their leaders ran shortly after the battle began.”

Anthony breathed a sigh of relief then said, “Thank God it wasn’t that bad. Has the Council met since then?”

Jonathan shrugged as he said, “I don’t know, you will have ask them.”

Anthony sighed before saying, “I am sure they will get to me soon me soon enough. I am going to be out of action for a while. Ribs take forever to heal.”

Jonathan’s obvious concern came through as he spoke, “Yeah Sister Ann Marie said it could take a month, maybe two before your 100% again. I am just glad that your alive my friend.”

“Thanks. Same here. Although I know a few things now that I wish I didn’t.” That thought brought Anthony’s legs to a halt. He turned to Jonathan and asked, “By the way I need to ask, have you ever dreamed of the past or from someone else’s point of view?”

Jonathan's face took on a look of shock before saying, “Can’t say that I have. I always dream of the future through my own eyes. Why? Have you?”

Anthony raised his eyebrows and looked at the clock on the wall before saying, “I fell through the pipe into the underground tunnels that run under the state hospital and was knocked unconscious. It happened then and I saw a few things. I usually only dream of one event at a time but that time I dreamed of several things through other peoples perspectives.”

“Odd. I never knew that was possible, heck it wasn’t all that long ago that I thought seeing the future wasn’t possible.” Jonathan smiled at Anthony who returned the gesture in kind.

“It was very unnerving to see things through other people’s eyes.” Anthony said as they entered his room.

“I can only imagine how bad that was.” Amanda said as she stood up.

“Considering that I saw Remus killed both of our fathers, yeah not very pleasant at all.” Anthony said as Jonathan helped get back down to the bed.

Amanda’s face remained calm but Anthony could tell under the surface she had emotions brewing so her response was to be expected. “What? Remus did what?”

Anthony raised his hands as he talked trying to give a visual cue, “He distorted light somehow and caused the two cars to hit each other. You were in the backseat when it happened.”

Amanda stayed calm and asked, “You saw that? Wow. I don’t even remember it happening.”

“That is weird considering you saw that one as a kid.” Jonathan commented.

Anthony gestured that he agreed with Charles as he said, “Yeah I know right. On top of that Charles is still alive.”

Amanda wasn’t looking at either of them; her eyes were down as she spoke again, “Yeah I knew that. He visited me many times when I was captive.”

“So he was the one in the chair.” Jonathan said.

“What chair?” Anthony asked.

“As far as we can tell it was an old electric chair but he was using in some arcane fashion to control the other Death Knights.” Jonathan said as he sat down in the second desk chair.

Anthony looked at Jonathan and said, “So there is a human element needed to control the Nephilim. That explains why Charles was recruited. For a while there I thought it was just because of his connection to me.”

Amanda raised her head as she said, “That was part of it. I remember Remus telling Charles that he will have the power to set the world on fire. I had no idea what that meant at the time but I guess this is it.”

Anthony went on to explain to them the rest of what he saw when he unconscious in the tunnel. After he finished he asked for something for the pain. Amanda went over to the closet and grabbed a bottle of Vicodin. She opened it and took out two pills. She got a glass of water from the sink and brought them over to Anthony. He swallowed the pills with a sip of water. Every movement hurt his side. He had no idea how much pain he could actually take before this happened.

They asked him about his time in the cell and told them he didn’t want to discuss it. He did, however, show them both the burns on his chest and stomach. He watched Amanda’s reaction to seeing the mark on his chest. She was good at keeping her calm in all areas except for her eyes. He learned almost on day one that her eyes told the hidden story of what she was feeling. This time her eyes were a mixture of worry and fear. He looked her right in the eyes and said, “Does this mean something?”

The look in her eyes did not change as she said, “Yeah it does. Remus wants you for something much bigger than I ever thought.”

Jonathan interjected, “That certainly doesn’t sound good.”

“Tell me something I don’t know. HA!” Anthony blurted out as his head started to swim. “The pain killers are starting to work and I need to rest for a bit.”

“I will be back later to check on you later. See you then.” Jonathan got up and departed.

Amanda was getting up and Anthony grabbed her arm. “I need you to stay. Come on lay down next to me. I need to hold you.”

She looked down on him with even more concern as she said, “Are you sure? I don’t want to bump you wrong and hurt you.”

He smiled as he said, “I will be fine. Having you here with me will help me heal.”

She lay down next to him snuggling as close to him as she could. Anthony found it hard to believe that this was only the second time they shared a bed together. Their wedding night was just a week before but it seemed like forever ago. His mind was slowing down as the drugs coursed through his veins. He started to itch here and there causing him to scratch himself. A thought came into his head and he found it hard to get the question out.

Suddenly a thought popped into his drug riddled mind and he asked, “You have a brother named Scott right?”

Amanda was perplexed by the questions but answered, “Yeah, why do you ask?”

Anthony’s head was swimming and his speech was clearly affected by it as she spoke. “I dooon’t knooow. I heard Rebus call him unholy…..that’s all.”

Amanda was having a hard time understanding him so she asked, “Rebus? You mean ReMUS?”

“That’s what I said Rebus.” Anthony laughed and slowly drifted off to sleep.

The next few days were mostly a blur to Anthony because of the pain killers. His body was mending but not nearly fast enough for his liking. The Council did not make an effort to summon him or even visit him for that matter. Anthony was worried that by choosing to rescue Amanda that they would willing to sever his status his amongst them. Anthony’s only visitors were Amanda, Jonathan and Sister Ann Marie. Sister Ann Marie on more than one occasion warned Anthony not to push himself too hard.

Anthony didn’t feel like waiting to heal. He would try as often as he could to sit up by himself then when he was able to do that he tried to stand on his own. The burns on his chest and stomach were mostly superficial wounds yet the idea of having Remus’s mark on his chest forever was a bit alarming to him. He would have trouble breathing which happened every time he got up to walk. There were times when the pain would be overwhelming making the pain pills useless. He didn’t let the pain slow him down despite Sister Ann Marie’s objections. He felt he had to get back in fighting shape as quickly as possible.

After finally being able to stand on his own he then started walking on his own. Amanda was very worried about Anthony’s persistence because he came close to re-injuring himself on several occasions. Amanda made sure they had food delivered to their room and eventually Anthony would have enough. Anthony would not see much outside of his dorm room this whole time and figured it was time to change that.

Anthony tried to hide his frustration as he said, “I want to go outside. It’s a beautiful day and I am sure our little spot down by the river is just as beautiful as ever. C’mon, I am going a bit stir crazy in here.”

Amanda’s face crinkled as she said, “I don’t know. Your ribs aren’t healed that much yet and you can still barely walk.”

His voice had a sound of desperation to it when he said, “All the more reason for me to do this. Trust me; if I stay in here much longer I am going to lose my mind.”

Amanda's tone was that of compassion as she said, “Alright. I still don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“You can tell me you told me so if I hurt myself again.” He laid on the charm topping it off with a huge smile.

The look on her face brightened a bit, “Deal.”

Amanda was holding onto Anthony’s arm in her usual way as they made their way down the stairs and out the back door. Anthony was walking on his power just a little slower than he would normally. Amanda stopped short when they got to the spot. Anthony turned around and hugged her close. “I know it’s scary for you babe but I really doubt Remus will try that again. He got what he wanted already.”

Amanda's concern came through as she said, “If something should happen you wouldn’t be able defend yourself or me.”

Anthony looked around and then said, “I did not to go through all of that just to live in fear. Besides, look around you. Ever since you got captured they put regular patrols on both sides of the river.”

That was enough for her to go the rest of the way. She trusted Anthony and his trust of his fellow Knights was enough for her. They reached the spot and Anthony lowered himself to the ground wincing as he did so. Amanda’s face showed her concern but said nothing. Anthony got himself down with a grunt and leaned back resting on his hands. He let the sun soak in to him and felt completely at peace. He decided it was time to ask her about her brother again despite how much he enjoyed just sitting there.

Anthony struggled to raise his right arm but managed to get it around Amanda as they sat together. He then said, “As you know I had a dream about that woman giving birth and how that evil presence went into the baby. I think I know who that was.”

Amanda was eager to hear more so she replied, “Really who?”

He hesitated for a second before saying, “Your brother Scott. What was your brother doing for them?”

She looked down and spoke with a very low voice, “I don’t really know. Scott changed quite a bit once Remus came into the picture. I didn’t see much of him when I was in the Middle East. It was almost like something was awakened in him by Remus’s presence. I never saw any more than that. Sorry wish I could help more.”

He reached his hand over and placed it on top of hers, “It’s alright babe. I know Scott is a big part of their plans. I wouldn’t have seen what I seen if it wasn’t important. Isn’t it funny how once we find something out that something else that’s just as big comes along? It’s a little frustrating to be honest with ya.”

“Yeah I know.” She thought deeply for a moment before speaking again, “If it helps there is one other thing that I noticed but didn’t think much of it at the time.”

Anthony nodded his head as he said, “What’s that?”

Her eyes finally met his again as she said, “His appearance slowly changed over time. He lost all of his hair and eventually his skin turned chalk white. My mom said he was really sick and that’s why it was happening.”

“Interesting. I wonder what that was all about.” He then remembered what he was told her mom and asked, “Speaking of your mom. Are you ok?”

Confused, Amanda responded, “Yeah why wouldn’t I be?”

“I figured one of them would have told you when you were captive.” Slowly he stood up and took a step forward staring out onto the river.

She got up and turned him to face her. “What about my mom?”

Anthony was at a loss for words but was able to mutter, “She’s….dead.”

Amanda lost all color in her face and seemed to lose control of her body as she fell to the ground. Anthony reached out to stop her fall as best he could and wrapped his arms around her. As he did that he felt a twinge of pain in his side forcing a groan to escape his lips. She started sobbing uncontrollably and held her hands over her eyes. She pushed Anthony away causing him to grunt again with pain. She slapped him across the face a couple of times with him making no attempt to stop her. She continued her assault until she hit him in the ribs once and reflex took over causing him to grab her hands. “I am sorry she is gone but hitting me won’t bring her back.”

She pulled her hands free and walked away. “I know that. I knew there would be consequences when I chose to be with you but I did not expect this. Why did you have you have to be so perfect? Why did you have to save me? HUH? WHY???”

Tears came to Anthony’s eyes as he said, “I saved you because it was the right thing to do. I chose to love you because I knew in my heart that I would do anything for you. That was more than enough for me.”

The tears stopped flowing as she said, “I know…I am sorry if I hurt you. I don’t really blame you for anything. This is Remus’s fault and I know that. He wasn’t here for me to hit. Sorry hun.”

Anthony showed her that half smile again as he said, “It was bound to happen eventually.”

Confused by what he meant she asked, “What was?”

“Our first fight.” He stared at her with a lopsided smile on his face.

She couldn’t help but laugh and elbowed him in the stomach. “Why do you have to do that?”

“Do what?” he asked wide eyed.

Acting like she was surprised he didn't already know she said, “Lay on the charm and look at me with those eyes of yours. Your eyes are so penetrating like you can see through me trying to see my soul.”

With that lopsided grin still on his face Anthony asked, “What if I am?”

She elbowed him again then pulled him in for a kiss. “Jerk.” She said softly after she pulled away.

Anthony got back down on the grass, laid back then spread his arms and legs. Amanda cuddled up next to him on his left side. They would remain there for the rest of the day just holding each other. Anthony’s thoughts drifted to why the Council hasn’t come to see him yet. It was really frustrating that none of them came to see him just for a visit. He had thought they had grown to be friends over the last year. He tried to defend them in his own head thinking up reasons like they might be busy with training or something like that. The more he thought of excused for them the more he got angry at them because none of the excuses seemed good enough.

It was getting harder and harder these days for him to control his anger. He was angry at the world for many things. Remus for killing his father and trying to ruin his life. Charles for torturing him and helping Remus. The Council for not even checking in on him while he recovered. His face took a very stern countenance which is something that did not go unnoticed by Amanda. She brought her hand up to his face and rubbed his cheek. He brushed her hand back.

“What’s wrong?” Amanda asked, half scared to hear the answer.

He practically barked out his response, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just can’t control my emotions anymore. I have been through so much in the last year that I think I am starting to lose it. The more I think about Charles and Remus the more I got upset. I swear I can still hear Charles laughing at me.”

She again put her hand to his face not allowing him to swat it away. “I know how things can seem bad, but remember the lessons of Faith that you taught me. Offer it up to God and let him deal with it.”

Anthony was clearly frustrated as he said, “I wish it was that easy for me. You have no idea how bad the things are that they did to me. I just don’t know how to deal with it.”

For the first time in their many conversations Amanda sounded annoyed by Anthony’s words. “OH I have no idea, huh? Do you have any idea how it was for me when I was with them?” Amanda was getting pretty upset and Anthony was afraid he went somewhere he shouldn’t have.

He responded with a lot let force in his voice, “You haven’t told me. You said Remus would torture you when you didn’t do as you were told and I didn’t ask what because I thought it might be something you would talk about when you were ready.”

“As you know Remus could talk to me in my mind. Well that wasn’t all he could do. Do you know what it’s like to have a nightmare while you are awake? He would force me to see these things for days on end and it’s a surprise I didn’t go completely crazy. Then I met you and everything changed for me. You showed me the right path on how to leave the past in the past and to heal. Although, the things he made me see still keep me up at night.”

He realized how he was acting, “Oh my God. I can only imagine how horrible that was for you. I am sorry babe. You’re right I should try to let this go and offer it up. I feel so ashamed for even trying to compare this to what you have been through. I feel like a jerk for real now.”

“I can forgive you for anything ya know. Just please don’t bring this up again. Thinking about those nightmares gives me the chills.” Amanda’s face showed her fear.

“I won’t I promise. Geez what a day. Seems like all we are doing today is fighting. Why don’t we do something fun?” Anthony said after a moment of contemplation.

“What did you have in mind?” She asked as Anthony watched the fear melt away.

He thought to himself for a moment and then said, “Let’s go watch a movie. Any movie that you want.”

She grinned, “Fine, I am going to pick out the cheesiest chick flick possible. You deserve to be tortured a bit today.”

Anthony laughed it off but wasn’t really looking forward to watching it. He was definitely NOT a fan of chick flicks. He made this little sacrifice in the hopes it would put her in a better mood. He hated the fact the he made her upset. He usually tried really hard to make her happy but when his mood slipped south so did his thinking. He made it through the movie without feeling the need to throw up his lunch which wasn’t very easy. These lovey dovey movies never seemed to be very realistic and usually involve subject matter he would rather avoid.

By the time the movie was over Amanda was in a much better mood so he felt he accomplished his mission. He saw that the sun had already gone down so he suggested that they to go bed. It had been a few hours since he took any pain medication so the walk back up stairs was a little painful. They crawled into bed cuddling close to each other. Anthony’s mood was definitely improved from earlier but what would happen once he fell asleep did not help matters. He had a nightmare of Charles torturing him again and laughing the entire time. It would not be the last one he would have this dream either.
