Chapter Six: Something wicked this way comes.

Anthony stashed the sword under his bed then left to see Amanda at the hospital. Anthony reached the hospital in a short amount of time. Once there his confusion over everything quickly turned to anger because no one was willing to disclose anything to him about Amanda. He wasn’t family and according to law they could not tell him if she was even there without her previous consent. He was arguing with the front desk attendant when he decided that conversation was going nowhere. He ran past her and headed towards the back of the hospital to where the Emergency Room was located. He got there just in time to see one of the paramedics who brought her here.

Anthony’s anger showed in his voice when he yelled, “HEY MAN WAIT!”

The paramedic turned, “Yeah what?”

“Where did you take my girlfriend?”

“She was admitted and taken up to the third floor. I didn’t hear what room she was in, sorry.”

“THANKS!” Anthony shouted and ran for the elevator. He pushed the button for the third floor as the lights started to flicker. He got to the third floor and felt a chill in the air like he never felt before. The air temperature was dropping rapidly as he made his way down the hallway. He could see his breath as he exhaled. He was getting more and more freaked out as each second ticked by. He looked around to see no one in the halls. No doctors. No nurses. Not even a candy striper. The lights completely turned off and the hairs on the back of his head stood on end. He felt afraid for the first time in a long time. He felt something was coming and was afraid that it might be after him.

He turned around to see a man without a face walking towards him. The closer the man got to him the more the veil of darkness pulled back from his face. Anthony could tell this ‘man’ was well groomed and had bleached blonde hair. Anthony noticed two things about how this man moved. It was both snakelike but at the same time very graceful. Anthony felt his heartbeat quicken and his breathing get heavy. He felt his muscles twitch and weaken like he was running a marathon. The sweat started pouring out of his pores like water through a sieve.

“Our time wasn’t supposed to come for awhile and yet here you are.” The “man” looked Anthony up and down. Anthony could hear the condescending tone in his voice when it said. “It’s so hard to believe my father was concerned with you.”

The more this ‘man’ spoke the more Anthony grew weak. He slowly fell to one knee as he lost control of his extremities. The fear inside grew as if someone was pouring Miracle Grow on it. He wanted nothing more than to look away. He did not want to face this THING in front of him. He couldn’t move his head and his eyes were irrevocably stuck looking straight at this ‘man’. When it spoke he felt like his ears were going to pop.

“You are so weak and pathetic. You haven’t even prepared for me.” The ‘man’ said with a chuckle.

Anthony was even weaker now. He could feel the life being sucked out of him. He knew right now he would either have to fight or die. However, he wasn’t sure how he could because he couldn’t even lift his arms. The only thing he noticed he could do was use his mind and he certainly was doing a lot of that at the moment. He was thinking as fast as he could and then this ‘man’ spoke again.

“I see the fight in your eyes. I would have thought you wouldn’t need to think so hard, Priest wannabe. Ask yourself this one question. What gives you the right to interfere in my grand work? Your little girlfriend belongs to me and maybe soon you will too.”

“Priest?” Anthony thought to himself. What defense would a Priest have against this? The neurons in his head were working overtime. Priests have the power of their Faith. He has never met a Priest that battled anything like this thing in front of him. Then as if being struck by lightening the answer hit him. Priests use prayer and their Faith to fight against the evils in the world. Some have had to perform exorcisms and come face to face with the enemy. He knew what he facing now and there was only one way to fight back. He could feel the breath of his enemy on his neck and a hand on his back.

Forcing the words out of his mouth Anthony said, “STAY BACK, foul beast.”

“Ahhhh. I can see you are starting to figure things out a bit here. Good, Good. I wanted a challenge after all. So what is the answer? What gives you the right to interfere?”

Anthony stared into this foul things eyes and said, “Faith”

This ‘man’ suddenly shot straight up and took a step back. Anthony saw that there was a look of fear now in his enemy’s eyes. There is only ONE thing that can show that much fear in the eyes of the faithful. Anthony felt warmth return to his body as if he was wrapped in sunshine. This was a demon that stood in front him. This demon just happened to wear a very friendly face. “ In the name of Jesus, foul thing, you are NOT welcome here. I command you in HIS NAME to leave this place.” The demon stepped back as being pushed by some invisible force. Anthony felt strength return to his body. Anthony rose and faced down his enemy without fear. His breathing was still heavy but he was able to say his prayer very clearly.

“St. Michael, the Archangel, defend me in battle. Be my protection and the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke I humbly pray. And do thou Oh Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.” The demon recoiled in fear as Anthony said, “Once again in His Name I cast you away. She is no longer yours. She is under MY protection and I am protected by my Faith in someone much more powerful than you.”

Anthony watched in awe as the creature in front of him turned and started to run down the hall way. He saw it heading towards the window at the end of the hall. He saw it jump towards the window but instead of breaking through, it slipped through as if it became intangible for a moment. Anthony had heard stories about how demons can bend the light to make things look a certain way. He stood there for what seemed liked forever thinking about what just happened. Anthony knew now what Jonathan meant. There was no going back.

The lights came back on and the air got warm again. He quickly looked around and saw that once again there was no one there. No nurse or doctor or candy striper. He was dumbfounded that he could not find a single witness to what happened. He walked up and down every hallway looking for someone but with no success. He started looking at all the clipboards that were next to every door. He went to every door leading up to the nurses’ station that was located centrally to every room. He looked at their patient board behind the counter and saw the name A. Rogers and the room number next to her name was 345.

He walked down the hallway to where her room was located. He stopped outside her door. He looked at the doorway next to him and sighed deeply. He took the clipboard out of the holder and began reading her chart. It read Amanda Rogers and went over her vital stats. She was 17 years old and was born in Jamestown. There was obviously more to her story than she ever told him. He hesitated there for a while. He wasn’t sure he was ready to hear the answers that she had for him. He couldn’t help but feel that his life was out of his control. He felt like a lowly pawn in someone else’s chess game.

He pushed the door open and went inside. She was lying on the bed crying. She must have heard everything that happened between him and the enemy. He walked up beside her and said, “We need to talk.” He paused to wait for a response and she nodded for him to continue. “I know there is more going on with you than what you have told me. I know what is in your “parents” bedroom in your house. I can only imagine how they got you into this but none of that matters now. I love you and I am not giving up on you. As long as there is breath in my lungs I will love you.”

She started crying even harder than before. She looked up at him with those beautiful blue eyes and spoke, “I don’t deserve your love. I have done some horrible, horrible things. I have told you so many lies that I am afraid once you know the full truth you will hate me. Before I tell you everything that you want to know, I need you to know that I love you too and that’s why I am going to tell you the truth.”

“I know. You’re afraid of something that will NEVER happen. I am committed to the path that I am on and this path includes you, for better or for worse.”

She nodded and replied, “Thank you. My job was to watch you and report everything we did together back to him. I even had to record a lot of our interactions so there would be something to show him. Charles and I were never really together and he only beat me when he was told to. I went to his place under orders because HE wanted you there. He never told me why. If I even attempted to ask a question I would be punished. Like the day we met. I hesitated to do it because from everything they told me about you. You seemed like a good enough guy and that you never caused any trouble. I was tortured for that hesitation in ways you can never imagine. He wanted me to get close to you and there was nothing that was going to stop that from happening. He knows you very well. Not just your life story, he knew things about you that I was able to see once I met you. He knew you would defend me when you saw Charles hitting me.” She paused and shrugged saying, “You were predictable I guess.”

Anthony let it all sink in before responding. “So it was all a lie then? Everything that we have done together? Was any of it real?”

“I loved you from the very first moment I saw you. No one in my entire life ever did anything like that for me. You came in to save me, even though I knew it was a set up, you didn’t. You went head first into danger to protect me. You just did it again right to HIS face.”

Anthony gestured with his thumb towards the hallway as he said, “Who is he? I know what he is but what is his name?”

Amanda wiped her eyes before saying, “Remus. I can’t tell you for sure what he is but I do know he is only part demon. I saw his “father” once and it was the worst experience of my life. I overheard them talking and the word Nephilim came out”

Anthony scratched his head as he replied, “Nephilim? That word is very familiar for some reason. Did they say anything else or is that all you know?”

“That’s all really. I know he wants you for some reason. His father gave him the order directly to get you on their side.” She stopped wiped the last of tears away then looked him the eyes. “Please forgive me for what I have done to you.”

“I love you babe. You didn’t even need to ask for that. Now get up and get dressed. You are coming with me and I am NOT going to let you go again.”

She dressed as quickly as she could because she was excited to be free from her captors. This is the first time in her life that she can remember being free. Her life story is something she is not ready to share yet with Anthony but in heart she wanted him to know. She didn’t know where to begin and starting the story was always the hardest part. She had no idea how he would take the news that she has a brother and a sister. That they were all slaves for as long as she can remember. She decided she would tell him when the time was right.

They left the hospital together and walked to his house. The walk was long and they didn’t talk much. She held onto his arm the same way she did the first time they met. He knew that things would be a little rough for them for a while and that things outside of them are going to get worse before they get better. They arrived just after dusk and soon found themselves down in his bedroom cuddling on his bed. He would not make the mistake of falling asleep with her again but he held her until she fell asleep then moved down to his place on the floor.

He would be awake for a long time thinking about the day’s events. He was in the middle of maelstrom that was full of danger, demons and dreams. He decided that no matter what events would happen his life from now on he would be ready for them. Then that word came back into this head. Nephilim. He knew he heard or read that word somewhere. It burned inside his head and he needed to know the answer. He soon found himself upstairs at the family computer. He connected to the internet and went to his favorite search engine. He typed in the word, Nephilim.

There were several thousand search results that came up. He clicked on the first link and saw a picture of Noah’s Ark. This wasn’t what he was expecting. He read the first paragraph. There was a lot of information about the flood that destroyed the ancient world and then some information about the giants that lived in that time. They went on to describe how it was the “sons of God” who came down and impregnated women. Their offspring was called the Nephilim which meant “to cause to fall.” Apparently they were the reason why God sent the flood. These half demon/half human offspring brought about many evils in the world.

He stopped reading and thought to himself that if one of these Nephilim are running around again that it can’t be good. He read on. He noticed this wasn’t an official website sponsored by the Church but the people who assembled it knew some of what they were talking about. The last line of the website was ominous enough to send a shiver up his spine. It said, “God promised he would not destroy the world by flood again so the worry we have here is that if the Nephilim come back into the world what will be there be here to stop them?”

He got up and went into the kitchen to get a drink of water. He had a really bad feeling that they since he knows that at least one was around that someone would have to stand up to it. Is this why his dreams showed him as a Knight? Jonathan did give him that sword so this may be true. He finished his water and went back down to his bedroom. He gently pulled the sword out from underneath the mattress where he put it earlier. He was able to retrieve it without waking Amanda. He went out to the large area at the bottom of the stairs. He drew the sword from its scabbard and just looked at it. It was one of the most beautiful things he ever seen. He hated the idea that instead of being able to hang this on the wall, he would soon be using it to slay his enemies.

He put the sword back into its scabbard. He walked back to his room and put the sword underneath the bed. He laid down on the floor and sighed deeply. His mind was racing worse than it was before he went to use the computer. The more he learned about what was happening to him the more he thought his life was out of his control. He felt that no matter what he did he would have to accept his fate. He knew that God gave him free will but when the fate of the world hangs in the balance he didn’t feel very free to decide anything. The last thing that went through his mind before he fell asleep was about the irony that was his life. He could see the future but couldn’t see the present and that scared him more than any demon ever could.
