chapter 8

In the pack, you were taught by the adults. You were taught how to fight and hunt, how to look after yourself. In the human world you went to school. You learned maths and history. How to read, write, how to run around and you learnt about other religions. Eleanor was just going into first year. (I live in Scotland so this is first year of high school.) So i was also going into first year, however i knew next to nothing when i first went.

All i did was stare into the darkness. i was wearing a pair of Mitchel's pyjamas, black with flaming skulls on it, staring into the wilderness. I was trying to calm down after everything that had happened today. All in one day i had come to a new house, met a very overprotective father, made some new friends and lost them. As much as i wanted to still be friends with Mitchel and Eleanor, her father had made it very clear he did not want me. I knew i would have to leave soon anyway but i didn't want to be forced.

I am also reluctant to leave. i may feel guilty about my pack but Adalwolf was still mean and i was still being forgotten. In fact they probably hadn't even noticed i was gone. They were probably still playing and hunting with each other. I want to go into the forest and hunt right now, feel the wind in my face and listen to the sounds of the forest. it's not like i was going back to sleep anytime soon anyway.

Finally making a decision i walked into the forest, situated at the back of Eleanor's house. the darkness became more absolute the further away i got. gone was the soft glow of a city in the distance. Gone was the buzzing of electricity. Gone was the alien land.

The sound of the forest engulfed me as walked silently through the tree's. I could hear a distant river and decided that was the best place to go. i could only somewhat see in the dark, as i went i was annoyed at how loud i was, i didn't have any shoes but even the pyjamas rubbing against everything was making too much noise. I wasn't used to having so many clothes on anyway. getting very annoyed i decided to ditch the shirt, sticking with only the bottoms. I t was easier to move quietly without having unnecessary articles of clothing.

Finally i found the river. there was a small water fall and a steep hill to the right, with the river continuing to my left. There was a soft glow behind the bush to my left, i decided to investigate. sneaking closer i prepared myself for a chase. Just as i was about to pounce the creature stuck it's head out. Large, wide eyes stared back at me, glowing a dull blue, it continued out showing of it's glowing wings and slick body. It looked like a big glow-y- wasp. It lifted a wing, then another and took off buzzing as it went. I felt like chasing it, where was such an odd creature going? what was it doing?

I was pulled out of my thoughts when i heard another buzzing noise, then another then another. Soon a whole horde of Glowing wasps burst out of the bushes. All of them were different colors. Blues, red, greens, glowing like light bulbs. Soon i had no choice but to follow, i was swept off my feet by the creatures and taken to a land more alien than the humans. A bright light grew steadily closer until i could take it no more and closed my eyes.

LINE-BREAK

All i did was stare into the darkness. I was wearing pyjamas bottoms, black with flaming skulls on it, staring into the wilderness.

Finally making a decision i walked back into the house.

The next day i woke up early. The sun was just rising and already the house was filled with shouting.

"Rory come on. you have to go to school!" i heard Eleanor shout from just outside my room. "I left some school clothes for you outside your door. We have to leave in... mm... 3 hours." With that she left leaving me to listen to her retreating footsteps. I went to the door and picked up the clothes, carrying them to the door in my room which looked a lot like a bathroom. Where you get clean and stuff. I personally don't mind splashing about in a river.

It took me about ten minutes to figure out how to turn it on. Another twenty minutes was spent under the water and ten minutes to get dressed, clean my teeth and make an attempt at my hair. I don't know how i know to do these things, or how to do them but i just let my instincts take over. Although i say it's my instincts it doesn't feel like it. It feels like i have been doing it for ages. practicing.

Then i made my way downstairs, into the living room. Eleanor was sitting on the sofa with a bowl in her hands watching t.v. I thought about sitting next to her but remembered the warning her dad had given me.

"Rory." he said it like i was nothing but mud he had to scrape off the bottom of his shoe. "I don't want you hanging around Eleanor. I don't want you to hurt her."

So i opted to go into the kitchen and get something to eat. I found some meat in the massive fridge in their gigantic kitchen. I scoffed it down and went back up to my room trying desperately to avoid Eleanor.

"Time to go!" Mitchell shouted from down the stairs. I ran down with my bag that i had been lent, filled with books and pencils and maths utensils. I followed Mitchell and Eleanor out of the door and into the garage. They picked up a two-wheeled metal frame, thing. The swung their leg over and sat down obviously waiting for me. Apparently my 'practising' didn't consist of sitting on dangerous looking vehicles.

"What is it?" i asked tentatively. They looked at each other and seemed to have a silent conversation. Finally Mitchell spoke.

"You can ride with me."

Eventually we were sorted. I was desperately clinging to Mitchell as he started pedalling and Eleanor was laughing her but off. The journey started on flat land, which i was grateful for. I started relaxing, feeling the wind on my face as the land started to go downhill. Big houses that lined the street, dwindled down into small country cottages. It felt like i was running in the forest again, but i was incredibly tall and there wasn't actually any trees or rivers but beggars can't be choosers, right?

We rounded a corner and i saw a sign that said SCHOOL, SLOW DOWN. I guess 'practise' includes reading, and hopefully writing too. I stumbled off the bike and stayed close to my friends, school was new. So many people and so small a space.

A Tall blonde girl came up to us with her hand outstretched.

"Are you new here?" i nodded my head shyly, unsure of what i was supposed to do, i looked at her hand and remembered the human greeting. I grasped her hnd and shook it gently.

"Ashley!" a Muscular boy asked from across the ground. He stood in a small circle with lots of strong intimidating boys. Ashley waved goodbye and wandered over to the boy, who dragged her into a kiss.

"Come on. You don't want to really be seen hanging out with her, or Henry - that kid - will pound you." pound me? i looked at her questioningly.

"He is the most athletic person in this school. He is also very possessive and Ashley is his girlfriend." I think i get it, but why does having a girlfriend make you possessive. It's not like he owns her. Is it?

The bell rings and i'm dragged to the office. We verify that i am in fact going to this school and get my timetable and locker password. We eventually made our way to our first class. We opened the door and was greeted by a bright classroom filled with staring people.

"You're late." said the teacher looking at Eleanor pointedly. Eleanor makes an innocent face and the teacher rolls his eyes. "Sit down." he says playfully. "Although we have a new student." he points at me and everyone's eyes shift to me. I start feeling uncomfortable, i need to get out, there isn't enough space in here, i need to run about not be stuck in a classroom.

I take a step back.

"Whats your name?" i force myself to calm down. I am not going to get out so i may as well get used to confined spaces.

"Rory."

"Well Rory you can sit next to Jennifer. Put your hand up please Jennifer." A girl with LOng black hair and pale skin with big brown eyes puts her hand up. I walk over trying to ignore the stares from everyone else. The teacher, who i find out is actually called Mr Brown, starts the lesson and i listen drinking in the information. Despite my first fears school is kinda cool. Well, first period Monday morning is cool.

All too soon the bell rings and we have to go to our next class. Mitchel and Eleanor show me around, it turns out they don't actually have any friends other than each other. Thankfully we all have the next period together, which was Maths. On our way they explain What not to do in the maths class. Apparently the maths teacher, ms Donegan was a really strict teacher.

It went similar to the first class, i and to introduce myself to the class then sit next to a new person. I was told to sit next to Garrett. Another strong boy, despite only being 13. He had the same kind of structure as Henry so, they are brothers? Probably. The lesson started and i was surprised to find it was easy. I knew all the answers and could answer them quickly.

The teacher handed out textbooks and notebooks and we had to do page 45. During the rest of the class, Garrett kept asking me questions. I answered a few of the m but got quickly annoyed. Why doesn't he just do it himself? It wasn't that hard

"Whats the answer to question 3B?"

"Go ask someone else." i snapped angrily. I had had enough of him asking questions and disrupting my concentration.

"Excuse me?"

"I said i wasn't going to answer any more of your stupid questions, answer them yourself." He turned an angry red and looked about ready for a fight, but the bell rang signalling the end of the lesson, i all too quickly jumped out of my seat, not even glancing at Eleanor or Mitchell. It's not that i was scared, no, i could take him easily, but i didn't want my secret out. Wouldn't look strange if a small, lanky-looking boy was stronger than the athlete of S1.

It was break now and i had found Mitchel and Eleanor, they were showing me my next classroom because i had English while they had French. We were wandering around the school, My friends pointing out all the classrooms and teachers i need to be careful of. Unfortunately Henry came right up to us.

"I heard you were being mean to my baby brother." he said towering over me and pretending that my friends don't even exist. As much as i wanted to keep my wolfness a secret i really felt like beating this guy up. How was i being mean/ it was his brother who was to dumb to answer the questions.

"Just cause he was dumb didn't mean i had to be nice." that was probably the wrong answer. A fist came flying at my face. I ducked to the left and grabbed his arm, flipping him over my shoulder and onto the floor. Well, that was easy. "Goodbye." i said waving and walking away. I went to my next class as the bell rang. I don't know where Eleanor and Mitchell went but i could find them later.

All through English Garrett was glaring daggers at me and the rest of the class kept their distance. I could only assume they had heard about my fight. A few lonely classes later it was lunch. I had my lunch card, but didn't really want anything to eat, the food at the school cafeteria looked a bit gross. I could handle no food until tonight anyway. It reminded me of being out in the forest, with Accalia hunting for food because the rest of the pack refused to give me any. Before i could sit down with Eleanor and Mitchel, Henry came over to me, not even saying a word as he punched me in the face. It came as a surprise so i couldn't really dodge. Instead i got hit right in the face and i swear i could hear a crack.

Now i was even more angry at him, as he went to punch me again i blocked with my arm and kneed him in the stomach. He grunted in pain and went to punch me again, i dodged and punched him, he grabbed my hand and pulled me straight into his other fist. Now with a Bleeding nose and a soon to be black eye i hit harder. I kicked him in the stomach ind punched his throat successfully winding him. He stumbled backwards and tried to catch his breath.

Just as i was about to go for another hit to the head, Mr Brown intervened. He stepped in the middle and i ended up punching him in the arm. There was a collective gasp from the now large audience as people saw what happened. As Mr Brown took me away in shame i saw Henry being taken in the opposite direction by another teacher.

He took me too his classroom and told me to sit down. We still had 20 minutes of lunch break so i figured i would be here for a while.

"I'm sorry, i didn't mean to punch you in the arm."

"No, you meant to punch Henry in the face." I looked down slightly guilty. One of my favourite teachers ( even though i've not met that many) telling me off and being disappointed does make you fell bad.

"He started it." i mumbled.

"I don't care who started it, neither one of you stopped it." I dropped my head yet again. "Rory, it's your first day here and you already have a powerful enemy. Since it is your first day i'll let you off, but if this happens again i'll have to send you to the headmaster." I nodded and left the classroom, feeling extremely bad.

The rest of the day went by smoothly, i didn't get into anymore fights and i had Mitchell and Eleanor in my last classes. At the end of the day i hopped on the back of Mitchell's bike and we made our way up the hill to our house. I skipped dinner and went to take a nap still disappointed in myself for getting in trouble. That night i dreamed of Mr Brown and what it would be like to have him being proud of me
