Prologue

Death would have been preferable but then again it would be too merciful on my part.

I was born with a wicked heart after all. People's despair is my joy and their pain my happiness. Never has there been a man born like me. That is why they punished me. If you are asking who did this to me... Well you would think of me as delusional if I told you. I think of them as more evil than me though. Punishing me because I didn't behave like the good little boy they wanted me to - they are no different from me.

After all, between man and gods, gods are the more wicked ones.

"Done with your little work, Christophe?" The paper was quickly snatched from my hands making me glare at the man in front of me.

"You will never be forgiven if you keep acting like that. If Gabriel finds out about this then he'll kill you!" Sebastian crumpled the paper and threw it in the waste basket.

"That's why I'm writing it in the first place, Sebastian - So that he can kill me. Imagine the look on his face when he sees what he's done." I laughed and Sebastian sighed.

"Had I not known you for long I would have mistook you for a lunatic. You don't have to kill yourself just to be free you know."

"Living means cowering in the shadows at the thought of them hunting you down. If I die then at least I'll live leisurely in hell." I replied. Sebastian could only frown at my answer and I knew what his question would be.

"How can you even be sure that you'll live a happy life in hell? If life was such a bliss there then no one would be afraid to sin anymore."

"At least it's better in hell than in this cramped up canvas..." I muttered to myself while looking out the window.

That's right. This world I live in is not reality but a painting created by the gods to punish me. No matter where I go, the whole place is nothing but an illusion to mock me. Only this mansion and its people are my solace. The only real thing from this fake reality.

"At least, with me gone, then they might actually show some mercy and let you all go." I added and was quickly seized by the collar by Sebastian.

"Idiot! Do you think this whole mansion would want you dead? We serve you no matter where you go- even in hell!" He shouted angrily. I stared at him wide-eyed for a minute before laughing at him.

"Truly you are one I'd trust with my life, Sebastian." I answered and he replied with only an exasperated sigh.

"Well~ Might as well head on over to Town then!" I then stretched my body, jumped out from my swivel chair and went to grab my coat.

"And what on earth do you plan to do there?" Sebastian asked me curiously while following me down the stairs. The moment I reached the door, I gave him a side glance and winked.

"To have some fun~" I replied and shut the door before I could hear a reply.

That's right, no matter what I do, I will never be able to escape from this nightmare I alone created.
