Chapter 6

A moment of silence passed between us, which didn’t take long to break.

“Like?” he insisted.

I sighed and looked at him, thinking that telling him about my doubts about time traveling wouldn’t be smart. “Not worth it.” I said, trying to avoid the topic.

He kept looking at me with an intense gaze that I decided to ignore. My thoughts went back to my theories and the possibility of being very high. But my thoughts drifted to my dear ones, Aria, Hannah and my mom.

They probably thought I was kidnapped, or worse. How was I going to explain this craziness? I trusted them my life, but wouldn’t they think I was going crazy and lock me up in a madhouse? Not a chance.

I missed them, so much sometimes it was hard containing myself breaking into sobs, but from the beginning of this journey, I knew tears wouldn’t do a thing. My mind even dared to go to my father, the man I had tried to despise since he committed adultery, but I couldn’t hate him. He made me the girl I was there, and from that, I would be forever grateful. But my mother came first, especially when she was the one left heartbroken and alone.

Suddenly he stood, startling me from my thoughts. I hadn’t even realized the silent tear running down my cheek. Cassius walked to the table across and started shuffling through some stuff I couldn’t see from the floor. He then threw a piece of cloth on my lap.

“What’s this?”

“The bandage you asked for.” He said in a nonchalant voice that had an angry tone with it. He had his back to me, refusing to look at me.

“Really? Is he a toddler or what? He can’t be possibly angry. I didn’t do anything!”. I thought, glaring at his back.

I rolled my eyes and ignored his attitude. My gaze went to the dirty cloth and snorted. “That thing probably has more bacterias than the floor of the bathroom at my high school.”

“No way in hell I’m putting that over my wound.” I crossed my arms and gazed at him with a challenging look.

He turned at me and arched an eyebrow. “Because the little princess of the future thinks she will lose her leg if she does?” deep sarcasm dripping from his voice. I looked at him blankly and blinked.

“Uhm...yes?” I said unsure of my answer.

A deep scowl crossed his handsome features. “Just put it.” he said with a final tone that left no room for discussion.

I looked at the supposed bandage with hesitation for some seconds. I sighed and gave up. I started bandaging my thigh were the deepest cut was.

If I loosed my leg and died, I was going to haunt his dreams for all eternity. And believe me, I’m a very persistent and stubborn person.

When I finished and a tight knot was made, a liquid kind of thing was in front of my face with the bag of goatskin that contained water.

“Whats that?” My nose wrinkled almost instantly at the sight of the bag.

“It will ease the pain. The water is for swallowing the potion.”

I looked at him like he was crazy. “Not drinking from there -I pointed with my index finger to the water- ever.”

I took the liquid from his hand and observed it. It was a tiny glass bottle that had a cork on the top. The liquid inside was a bright green and had bubbles inside, which made me think twice before I drank it. Just when I decided that maybe he wasn’t trying to poison me I took the cork on the top, but Cassius’ voice stopped me from doing anything else.

“Believe me, you are going to need water.” He said looking amused. I ignored him and drank the bottle to the bottom. The taste was weird. It tasted like that cheap artificially grape-flavored soda that was popular some years ago. And then the hot spicy stung my mouth.

My eyes grew wide and I started coughing desperately to get rid of the spicy in my mouth. For my luck, Cassius hadn’t taken the water away. I took it roughly from his hand and started drinking like crazy. When the water was finished, the hot spicy still stung my tongue. I opened my mouth so some cool air could take the hot feeling in my mouth. When it had passed a little, I looked at Cassius in disbelief.

“What the hell was that?!” My entire face was flushed and I felt like the temperature of the room had increased a hundred degrees.

Cassius couldn’t keep it any longer and lost his shit. He started laughing, clutching his stomach and pulling his head back. His laugh was smooth, if you could say it like that, and was kind of enjoyable. I shook my head at the thought to keep my anger at point.

“It’s not funny! My whole fucking mouth was in flames!”

And that just made him laugh harder. I crossed my arms in front of me and looked at anywhere besides him in annoyance. When he still didn’t stop laughing, I looked at him with an eyebrow arched. When he started to control himself, one of his arms was clutching his stomach and the other one gripping the table for support. His eyes were about to spill tears and he had a smile that fully reached his eye.

“Are you done?” I said with clear annoyance in my voice.

He looked at me and was about to start laughing again but I glare at him in time for him to shut up. He cleared his throat and straightened his posture but still with that dazzling smile that could make 100 ladies faint. And at that moment I realized how handsome he was. His hazel eyes were shining and his smile was perfect. What he did to keep it that way would be a mystery. He had a defined jaw and high cheekbones that made him look like a supermodel, and his hair was combed to the side. I had only seen his scary and hard side, and seeing him like that made me wonder how much I didn’t know about him.

“I am very sorry, but I could not help myself.” He said in his British accent that made me smile unconsciously. He sat at my side with his back against the wall and let out a sigh, and his smile started to dissolve.

“I hadn’t had laughed like that for decades.” he said in a small voice, that for some reason made me feel compassion towards him.

“Glad to be of service.” I said sarcastically, trying to be angry. He looked at me and I couldn’t avoid the chuckle that escaped my lips. A teasing smile made it’s way to my face and I pointed an accusing finger to his chest.

“I’m going to have my revenge someday.” I looked at him and his gaze seemed to see easily through me. He looked amused, to say the least.

I looked at my leg and try to move it a little. The pain was gone. In fact, I couldn’t feel my leg or move it. I moved my other leg and responded well like it was supposed to. I poke my thigh and felt nothing.

“You said it was going to ‘ease the pain’ -I said using air quotations- not making it dead!” I punched him lightly in the shoulder and crossed my arms. He chuckled and shook his head.

“You look like a five-year-old child when you try to show yourself tough.”

Not giving a damn about his opinion, I just gave him the middle finger.

“What should that mean?” he asked looking at my finger with more amusement than before.

I groaned not in the mood of explaining that is supposed to mean something insulting.

“How long my leg is going to be like this?” I asked, once again poking it with one finger to see if I could feel it.

“Depends on how bad is the wound.”

I nodded and sighed, looking through the window in front of me. The sun was shinning and the birds were singing with grace. “It must be around four o’clock maybe.” I thought with a sigh. I took my phone and bit my lip. It had 86% of battery since I hadn’t had use it in those two days. I knew deep down that I wasn’t going to use it in a long time. With that, I pressed the off button for some seconds to shut it down completely. I looked at Cassius, and before I could even process what I was saying, I asked.

“Do you trust me ?” I blurted looking at his eyes. The question took him by surprise clearly. He didn’t answer so I started rambling like I always do when I’m nervous.

“You know what? That was really stupid to ask. I mean, we know each other for some hours and you even try to kill me so don’t mind me. To be honest, I just wanted to know if you really believed my story or-” he put his hand over my mouth stopping my rambling.

“I think I do.” he simply said.

This time was me who was taken aback. “He trusts me? Like, really?”

“You do?”

“Enough for me to believe you and not kill you.” He said in a such a hard voice, that I knew his usual self was back.

I bit my lip and looked in another direction. It felt like the death threat was still up, and that scared me.

“You should rest now Lady.” he said in court voice that made me snort.

“I think I’m kilometers away of being a lady, Cassius.” I said saying for the first time his name out loud.

He gave me one of his smiles and just shook his head. And again my stupid mouth acted before I could even think what I was saying.

“You should smile more frequently. Looks good on you.” I blurted looking at his hazel eyes. Just as I said it I blushed red crimson and looked away from him and tried to hid it with my hair.

“What the fuck Liberty, really?!” My subconscious shouted at my stupid action. I just look to my left, avoiding his gaze and looking at the wall like it was the most interesting thing in the world.

I could sense his smirk from a mile and that just made me even angrier that I had boosted up his ego.

“You should really change your clothes La-”

“Lib. Call me Lib.” I said before he even dared to call me Lady again. I turned to look at him and he just shrugged.

“Well, then you should really change your clothes Lib.” My nickname rolled out of his tongue with that deep British accent that I loved.

“Because I look like a slut?” I suggested, in which he ignored me and started looking for something inside a bag. He threw something at my face and I could do was to glare back. Before I could say something to him for that, he left the cabin without a word. I looked at my lap where the thing he threw laid and saw they were clothes. It was a white cotton shirt with a V neck that was at least 3 sizes bigger and blue cotton pants that will probably fall instantly when I put them. It wasn’t too difficult to figure out they were man clothes. I sighed and started changing. I put the shirt first, which I had to fold both sleeves a couple of times. Then I remembered I had to get up to put the pants. I tried to get up, but my right leg was still numb and I couldn’t move it.

I sighed and started cursing under my breath. When it seemed impossible and 10 minutes had passed without any success, I used my last resort.

“Cassius! I need your help!” I shouted, wishing he had heard me and that he hadn’t left. No answer came after that and I waited for 20 seconds for an answer. No answer after the 20 seconds and I decided to shout again.

“Cassius could you come please!” I shouted a little louder. I waited a whole minute this time and there was no answer.

“Damn him.” I muttered. So that left me with changing on the floor. I started lowering my shorts with my hands and with one leg I pushed my body up the floor to push the shorts to pass my butt. When I succeeded I grinned at my expertise and with one hand I took them out of my legs. Just when I reached for the blue pants, all hell broke loose.

“What do you n-” he said opening the door and stopped when he looked at me with wide eyes. I looked down and realized I was in my panties and nothing else. My whole face started burning and the only thing I wished was for the floor to open and swallow me whole.

“GET OUT!” I said shouting like crazy. If this was a neighborhood at night, I would have probably wakened everybody up. Like he had been threatened for his life, he got out and closed the door in a blink of an eye.

Everything was silence after that. I could hear his heavy breathing from behind the door and I was with my eyes shut without making a move.

“Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck” That was the only thing in my mind for at least 3 minutes. I shook my head to get out of the moment and started to put the pants on. “Holy hell he just saw me like no man has seen me in my entire life.” I groaned in annoyance. “You know him for less than a day and he already saw you in your underwear... and it looks you are staying for a while with him.” My subconscious reminded me, which made me groan again. Nothing else can happen. NOTHING.

When I had my pants on, I reached for the elastic that was supposed to tight my hair bun, but half of my hair was out with all the walking and “little adventures” I had for the last 48 hours. I took it out, letting all my hair fall. With the elastic, I tied up the excess of pants in my hips. The pants were secured and I was sure they were not going to fall in case I had to walk or even run. Still, they were too long so I had to fold them in each leg in the far end. When it seemed I was ready I cleared my throat.

“You can come in.” I said in a small voice that I was surprised he even listen from behind the door. The door slowly opened and he came in. My cheeks instantly blushed and I looked down. When I could finally look up, his cheeks were pink and he was biting his lip, looking anywhere besides me. “OMG, he is embarrassed! The tough, cocky and arrogant Cassius was embarrassed!” I thought while looking at him.

“I am so sorry.” he said when he could finally look at me.

I looked at him and nodded. “It’s fine, I guess...”

“That’s it? You are not going to shout or try to hit me?” he said with a confused face.

“Uhm, no.” I looked at him and then a smirk went to my lips. “I prefer to keep it for future events.”

“It does not surprise me.” he muttered.

I laughed. “I was just teasing!”

He chuckled and sat again next to me, this time a little bit further, which I appreciated silently.

“Thanks, for everything. It may seem like I’m an ungrateful bitch, but I’m really grateful. You saved my life.”

He nodded sternly.

“I apologize for treating you bad at first, no one with good intentions appears on this woods, generally.” He said eyeing me from the corner of his eye.

“So he knew how to apologize... ”

“So, what can I offer you in return? I feel bad staying here without doing something useful?” I said, expecting for him to make me work or something.

He snorted. “What could you possibly give me? I could not possibly need your help.” His ego was high in the clouds and made me internally roll my eyes.

“I did make you laugh, which I know just from looking at you is not something you do often.” I said looking at him directly in the eye. I couldn’t help it though, his eyes were truly beautiful.

He looked at me with a strange look and didn’t say anything, which gave me the pass to keep talking.

“See? We can make a deal. I stay here and have your hospitality and I make you laugh.” I said while elbowing him softly on his side.

“Seriously?” he said amused.

“Well...since there’s nothing else I can offer, then yes. I’m pretty serious.” I tried to put a serious face but just ended up in giggles.

“Deal.” he said with a laugh.

How we passed from being at first awkward, then embarrassed to be laughing like we had known each other for our entire lives? I don’t know. The only thing I had in mind was that I needed to know him better.

I had a lot of things to figure out.
