Perils of Wishing - Carl
I’m Carl Michaelson, fourteen, and I know that wishes come true. No, that isn’t a fantasy. I gave up fantasies long ago. It’s the literal truth, whether you like it or not. I don’t. When anything you wish for can be granted literally, you need to be careful what you wish for.
All I wanted was some silence. Well, that sort of got granted. No one could make a sound for twenty-four hours. During which time, the imps decided to recolonize the school. Imps are very annoying.
Then, of course, there was the time Susie wished to see a unicorn. She was five at the time. What did you expect? Five-year-olds do that. The results weren’t pretty.
Angel claims that when she wished to stay here forever, she entered a loop of June Tenths, the next-to-last day before summer break. According to her, she lived that day nine times. Now, this might be true, but Angel is a compulsive liar. Guess that’s what it takes to be a Senator’s daughter.Frankly, the list of incidents where wishing screwed up “normal” life here is probably longer than this. However, as Al says, “Weird shit happens on Roanoke Island”. It’s hard to tell with most of the other reality-bends what caused them. Still, wishing where strange things can happen - and generally do - is not a smart idea.
