Chapter XVIII

I was given permission to roam freely around the household, and only to places, I was shown. So, of course, I immediately headed to the library to find a book to read and pass by time.

I push the heavy doors inward with a heave and walked inside, inhaling deeply the fine prints and padded deeper inside. The soft glow of the room gave off a warm feeling that settled in my chest, the smallest of smiles made its way upon my face as I gazed around, I knew for sure I was going to be spending a lot of time in here.

Now, I wondered, my eyes lingering over shelves of books near me and across the room; where do I start?

Sometimes while reading a romance novel, I dozed off laying horizontal on a soft cushioned sofa, the book on my chest and my hand resting on my stomach. I was barely conscious when I felt the presence of someone looming over me, the ghost touch of fingers drifted down the side of my face, curling around my ear; I subconsciously shiver and the touch disappears.

The feeling of weightlessness settles with the pressure of arms underneath my back and knees. My eyes flutter open to see the ceiling above, swaying as it moved, I blinked my mind too fogged up to realize it wasnโ€™t the ceiling moving but me.

Breathing in deeply, my eyes sluggishly move to the side colliding with intense blue eyes as they stare back at me. Exhaustion still makes itself known, weighing down my limbs as I lay limply in Delanoโ€™s arms.

โ€œWha. .?โ€ I try to speak, as my eyes flutter open and close.

He shushes me, โ€œSleep,โ€ he says, and for once his voice isnโ€™t hard and commanding yet soft and low.

I donโ€™t protest and simply fall back asleep, my head slumping back. Just before dreamland, I felt the hands around me tighten just a tad.

The next time I woke up it was to the rumbling of my stomach, and this time I was in bed the duvet pulled up over my shoulder. The room was drenched in darkness, the air cool and chilling now with the sunset, the door was parted open as I slowly sat up.

With my eyes trained on the door, I slip out of the bed, my toes meeting with the plush carpet. I wiggle my feet as I stalk towards the door, my goal set on getting to the kitchen and getting something quick to eat and snack on. The door opens with a loud creak and I freeze, waiting a few seconds then continuing out the door and to the steps that lead down the familiar path to the kitchen.

I walked quietly through the archway of the kitchen and to the fridge, popping the door open, the cool air immediately hits my exposed skin causing goosebumps to rise on my skin. My eyes scan up and down the clear shelves stocked with food, mostly somewhere just ingredients that one had to cook and honestly, I didnโ€™t have the time for that.

My gaze zeros in on a container of mixed fruits, I reach forward and grab the tasty goodness that had my mouth watering and didnโ€™t waste a second to clamp down on a pineapple biting into the juicy fruit. I moan out loud when the sweet fluid hits my taste buds and close the fridge with my hip.

I walk over toward the island counter and set the container of fruits on top before sliding on the stool and munching away at my midnight snack, it didnโ€™t take long for me to finish off the fruits. Sucking on the tips of my fingers, I wonder over to a smaller door beside the cabinets and find it to be a walk in pantry where food was stocked.

Again my tummy slightly rumbles and I look over the items inside, a second later my gaze zeros in on a bag of trail mix and I walk inside reaching for it when a sound comes from the kitchen. I whip around and peer out into the kitchen, the doorframe blocking my view of looking into the rest of the kitchen.

Waiting for a moment or two I grab the bag, and head back out, shutting the pantry door behind me, I turn around hand in the trail mix bag when a set of intense blue eyes collide with mine.

I scream, loud and high pitched, dropping the bag as the contents inside go spilling on the wooden floor.

โ€œHoly shit. .โ€ I breathe out, resting my hand on my chest as I leave back against the door behind me.

โ€œWhat are you doing down here?โ€ Delano asks, standing un-phased, by the island counter.

โ€œWhy do you keep doing that?โ€ I say, pointing at his form before dropping my hand to my side.

โ€œKaitlyn. .โ€

I try to suppress the shiver that rushed through me by coughing, still breathing heavy, I straighten up giving him a โ€˜reallyโ€™ glare.

โ€œWhat else would a pregnant lady being doing in a kitchen at midnight?โ€ I counter sarcastically.

The sound of footsteps grabs my attention to the entrance where both Abel and Eileesha appear, in comfortable attire.

โ€œI heard a scream,โ€ says Abel, โ€œSomething tells me it was due to Delanoโ€™s ugly mug?โ€ he jokes.

Eileesha elbowed him in the side causing him to chuckle before she faces forward again and her gaze flickered to me, her eyes devoid of any emotion. It sent a zap down my spine and I was the first to turn away, something in her aura always kept me on edge as if she was looking at me like a predator would his prey.

Delano sent Abel a chilling glare from the corner of his eye, and I began to wonder if the man had a death wish every time he fooled with Delano.

โ€œNo,โ€ came Delanoโ€™s deep response. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t.โ€

Abel crossed his arms, โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case then would you please keep it down,โ€ he looked over at him next, โ€œSome people are trying to sleep.โ€

And just as fast as they came they left, leaving me in a prison of silence with the brooding man just on the otter side of the island. Looking down at my feet, I see the contents of the trail mix still on the floor and I have the sudden urge to cry.

Blinking rapidly, I bend down, I start gathering the peanuts, m&mโ€™s, raisins and almonds in my; internally mourning of the loss of sweet goodness settling in my belly. The scuffing of shoes causes me to lift my head and spot Delano slowly making his way toward the exit.

I scramble to my feet, โ€œWait!โ€ I call out, dumping the treats back in the back and setting them down on the counter near me.

His body goes rigid at the sound of my voice and he pauses in his steps, staying silent and looks at me over his shoulder.

I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, suddenly nervous. It isnโ€™t easy asking your โ€˜kidnapperโ€™ for something.

โ€œUh. . I was wondering if you could set up an doctors appointment for me, somewhere.โ€

He turns his torso and slowly whirls around to face me fully. โ€œWhy?โ€ his deep voice rumbled through me.

I place both my hands on my stomach, and tilt my head to the side, the corner of my lips tilting upwards. I donโ€™t say anything more as my hand to my belly speak volumes. His eyes drift down, lighting a flame in its wake as he stares at the slight bump seen through the thin shirt.

Delanoโ€™s eyes held an an intense and dark look when they met more once more, rather than making me shake with fear, the look caused liquid heat to pool between my legs and throughout my body.

โ€™Damn hormones.โ€™ I bit my bottom lip, my face blowing up red while shifting on my feet.

His nostrils flared.

โ€œOkay,โ€ he says, tone deeper than before. โ€œIโ€™ll set one but it will be a month from now until I have some things cleared.โ€

Not waiting for my response, he spins around and walks out, leaving me to stand alone. I release a shuddering breath, rubbing my thighs together. I was in need of new underwear.
