Chapter IV

โ€œI think thereโ€™s something wrong with you.โ€

Maddie paced up and down the length of the floor in front of the sofa. A deep frown marred her beautiful face while she nibbled on her bottom lip.

โ€œMaddie. .โ€ I groaned, shaking my head. I lay my head back down on the arm rest of the sofa.

โ€œThink about it Kaitlyn!โ€ she turned sharply toward me, halting in her steps as her intense gaze locked on me.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been sleeping longer than usual, not to mention you have been eating a lot.โ€ she gestured toward the three big bags of Cheetos, Ruffles, and Lays.

I slowly sat up and grin sheepishly at her. โ€œWell, okay, whatโ€™s your point then?โ€ I ask, scratching my head.

A sudden knowing glint shone in her eyes. โ€œWhen was your last period?โ€ she countered.

โ€œUh, last month.โ€

โ€œOkay, and it still hasnโ€™t come on yet, right!?โ€ she says a little too excitingly.

โ€œYes,โ€ I answer, a frown sporting my face.

โ€œAnd youโ€™ve been throwinโ€™ up too?โ€

I nodded, slowly leaning up into a sitting position, swinging my feet around and placing them on the ground.

She suddenly gasps, raising a hand to her mouth to cover the smile that was only spreading across her mouth.

โ€œOh dios mรญo. .โ€ she mutters, in her language.

โ€œWhat? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ I question, my eyes sweeping over her face, my heart pounding against my ribcage.

โ€œYouโ€™re pregnant.โ€

That was the moment my stomach decided to twist and churn, within me. Covering my mouth, I hop up and bolt towards the bathroom Maddie hot on my heels; I fall to my knees, a position Iโ€™m familiar with, and vomit. I feel fingertips softly graze against my cheeks pulling my hair from my face as my back arches forward.

โ€œLet it out. .โ€ I hear Maddie whisper through the haze I fell into, โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€

A gurgled cry manages to escape my mouth before Iโ€™m back at it again, small tears gather at the edge of my eyes. A few seconds later, Iโ€™m breathing heavily while leaning against the base of the shower tub with my eyes closed in exhaustion. I feel rough material rubbing the corners of my mouth and the sound of the toilet going.

โ€œI canโ€™t. . be. . . pregnant.โ€ I say between breaths, parting my eyes to look through my wet lashes at her.

She shakes her head, settling in on her ankles. โ€œItโ€™s the only explanation, how do you know if the man you lost your virginity to was wearing a condom or not?โ€ she softly tells me, pulling me up by my wrist so I that sat on the toilet lid.

She dabbed the hand cloth over my forehead and down my neck. I press my lips tightly together as I try to think back to that night.

โ€œExactly,โ€ she says, pulling back and looks at me seriously. โ€œYou wonโ€™t know โ€™til you take a pregnancy test.โ€

I sigh, running a hand through my before giving a small night.

โ€œAll right.โ€ I agree, smacking my hand on my thigh. โ€œIโ€™ll take the test.โ€

She grins, I was just about to get up when she pushed me back down. โ€œNo no! wait here!โ€

Maddie darts up and speed walk out the bathroom, I hear her shuffling around in the living room before I hear her feet pattering against the wooden flooring.

โ€œHere,โ€ she says once sheโ€™s back, and hands me a slender pink box.

I reach out and grab it from her, a frown forming on my face for the second time today.

โ€œWhere did you get this?โ€ I ask.

โ€œMy purse.โ€

My frown deepens, โ€œUm, and why do youโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€”thatโ€™s not important right now!โ€ she suddenly cuts me off, her face a bright red color. โ€œJust take the damn test! Iโ€™ll be back to see if you did.โ€

And with that, she turns on her heels and leaves they are closing the door behind her, gently. I listen to her footsteps fade.

Releasing a breath, I began to read the instructions on the back of the box.

After I flush the toilet, I once again sit on top of the lid, placing the pregnancy stick on the sink counter at the same moment Maddie walks in.

โ€œYou finished?โ€ her eyes drift over to the slender stick that awaits to tell my life.

I bob my head, โ€œYeah. Just finished, gotta wait three minutes for the results to settle in.โ€ I mummer.

She strides in completely and comes to sit next to me, on the edge of the tub, her eyes staring at me while I focused my own on the tile floor.

โ€œHow you feeling?โ€ her hand rubbing soothing circles on my tense back.

I suddenly suck in a shuddering breath. โ€œNervous.โ€ I answer honestly, โ€œIโ€™m not ready to be a mother.โ€

She stops her movement. โ€œHey now! Even if you are or not, Iโ€™ll be here to help you, every step of the way.โ€ she tells me sincerely.

I kept quiet for a full minute, my head clouded with thoughts and questions. What if I am pregnant? What will I do? How will I raise the baby? How will it grow it without a father, one I donโ€™t even know? Am I even considering keeping him or her?

โ€™Thereโ€™s always an abortion. .โ€™

โ€œI think you should check it, now.โ€ says Maddie, snapping me away from my thoughts.

I nod, and with trembling hands I pick up the stick and gaze down at it, my breath instantly flowing from my lungs.

โ€œWell shรญt.โ€ I hear Maddie mutter, but Iโ€™m stuck in my own little world of complete shock.

โ€œNo, this canโ€™t be.โ€ I whisper to myself as I continue to shockingly stare down at the pink stick in my hand.

I shut my eyes tightly together, hoping and praying what I saw was an mistake. I force open my eyes after a second and itโ€™s still the same, those two straight lines mocking and taunting my being. Dread seeps into my system at each passing second as I openly stare at the thing that told me my future.

Iโ€™m pregnant. . . and I donโ€™t know who the father is.
