Chapter 34: Awake Again
Tyson straightened up in his seat and gave an enormous yawn. He turned to his father sitting next to him and frowned. “Is the show over? I must have dozed off.”
Onstage, the magician flailed his arms, unsuccessfully attempting to conjure something out of the air. Though he still wore his more impressive clothes, he had returned to being hack magician Markus Zauber instead of the dangerous Sir Daemon Nickeltwist. Tyson wasn’t sure how he knew that.
His dad grunted, his face hardening into a scowl. “It is for us,” Neil said. “This poor sap is not worth our time. But you know what’s always worth it? Nachos. What do you say?”
Tyson’s eyes widened and he licked his lips. “That sounds great!”
He and his dad stood to go, when they caught sight of Matt standing in the doorway. The second they had reached him, he took them both in an enormous bear hug.
“Uh, hi, Matt. Good to see you too. The magician wasn’t very good. So bad, that I even fell asleep. It was kind of crazy. You would not believe the dream I had just now.”
Neil and Matt laughed in unison. “Actually, son,” Neil said with a smirk, “I think we can.”
Tyson’s face wrinkled in a puzzled expression. “You can? What do you mean?”
“I think that’s something we can talk about over the nachos,” Neil replied.
Matt placed a hand on Tyson’s shoulder as they walked. “We always knew you were cool, Ty. Today, we just found out how cool.”
“Over there!” cried dad. “Nachos!”
They ordered the biggest, gooiest mountain of nachos that Tyson had ever seen. They found a nearby picnic table and each selected a battle strategy. It took all three of their concerted efforts to even make a dent in the mountain of savory tastes.
“Mm,” said Neil. “These are almost as good as the new and improved nachos.”
“The what?” asked Tyson his mouth dripping with melted cheese.
“We should start at the beginning,” Matt said, wiping at the corners of his mouth with a napkin. “But I think we can say everything is going to be different from now on.”
Tyson finished the bite he was working on and grinned. ”I can only imagine.”
