Part I: When the Moon misses the Sun

One walks in the day, and the other by night.

One illuminates the darkness, and the other by daylight.

But for one moment. One fleeting moment .

Everything was right.

There was no reason for the Moon Princess to be lonely. She was surrounded be the brightest of stars and surrounded by so much beautiful tranquility in the moon. But the yearning gaze she had as she waits by her window didn't escape anyone's notice.

The people of the moon believed that no place could be more beautiful than their home. They lived in blissful peace and harmony, while ruled by a kind rulers.

The princess was always polite. Always kind and patient. But even as she smiled, her eyes never seemed to be really there. Her thoughts always somewhere else. Always distracted. Though their princess still worked with earnest and loyalty to her people, the Stars worry if she herself was happy.

One day, the bravest Star cme forward and asked their princess, “Are you happy?”

While taken by surprise, the princess did manage to respond. “Of course, I am,” she whispered. “I am doing something I love. My people are happy. Are you not happy?”

Star nodded. “I am happy.”

Pleased by the response placed a gentle kiss on the brave Star's forehead. “I am glad.”

The Star always loved the princess's voice. It was gentle and caring, but she also knew in the depths of her heart --- that this kind princess that would do anything for her people --- had told her a lie. It was a kind lie and told with such ease that Star knew that it was a lie she often told.

But one day. Something was different.

Star believed it to be any other day. Why would this day be different? But the other Stars knew better. The sun was at a closer distance than usual. The youngest Star thought that she would find their princess by the window again, with her gaze in melancholy.

Much to her surprise, the princess gazed at the approaching daylight with more happiness than she had ever seen her. “Finally,” she heard the princess mutter. “Finally, I can ----”

The princess never finished what she was going to say and instead turned and quickly ran towards the nearest exit. The youngest Star turned to the other Stars, who just smiled sadly at her shaking their heads. “Leave her be. It will just be a moment. She is off to meet her.”

“Who?” she asked.

“Her other half. A sister with a piece of her heart. That she was doomed never to see again.”

“Why?”

“Because one cannot be without the daylight and the other cannot leave the darkness.”

The Moon Princess ran. Her white dress getting in the way, but she paid no attention to the discomfort. She had to make it. After all, she didn't know when she would find this moment again. Finally, she reached it. The surface of the moon that would give her the most perfect view of a blue and green planet.

With a wave of her hand, a vision appeared in front of her. In the vision, the day was just about to come to an end. Just about. With the sun at the west and the moon at the east, the princess found the gaze she was looking for.

There she was. Her smile bright and tired from a day under the sun, a Fae of Daylight returned the princess's gaze knowingly. Neither could speak to one another. Both could only smile with happy tears in both their eyes. But the moment would only be fleeting. Since the magic could only stay up as long as the sun meets the moon.

As quickly as it came the moment was over. The vision was gone.

They were sisters in everywhere it mattered except blood. But many, many years ago … the princess made a difficult choice to return to the moon and accept the crown as its princess. The kingdom was in need of her light. And without it, the kingdom would slowly die.

It would mean she would leave behind her friend. Her friend, a fae princess that could never leave the sunlight lest she would perish.

For so long, they only had these moments. They were short, but they told themselves it would be enough to keep them going.

After the tears have dried, and it was time to return. There was always an anticipation that kept the princess smiling. Her friend didn't forget.

Neither aging, forever beautiful; however neither ever within reach. The cruelest torture of all.
