Tithe: Another Reset

I wasn’t allowed to do anything until hades came back. I was stuck inside the main hall with Zeus, and that woman. They were all friendly enough, but the air just felt heavy. There was some form of relief when Hades finally came back, but not in the way I had hoped.

Hades entered the room and he had a perplexed expression. “I’ve found the information I was looking for, and punishment has been dealt out to those involved.”

The woman spoke up. “What does that mean?”

Hades answered. “The assistants involved decided it would’ve been easier to take a dragon egg and place an elven soul within it. They suppressed the dragon part during production inside the egg, and upon hatching the child was left in the woods to be found and raised by dryads.”

Zeus spoke up. “So, then the contract is null?”

Hades nodded. “Yes, that would appear to be the case. I will not bind someone to an impossible contract due to circumstances beyond their control.”

Zeus got up from his chair and stretched. “Well, then it would seem that this is very likely your daughter. What will you do now?”

The woman answered. “I’d like to take her with me.”

Don’t I get a say. “Don’t I get a choice here?!”

All three of them said it. “No!” that’s crushing!

I sunk into the chair I was in. I don’t get a choice, and I’m not strong enough or fast enough to get away from two gods and a dragon.

Hades said something. “Well I do have an idea. This is partially my fault, and I feel that I should try to pay you back for it. We can put her soul in a new egg, unfertile of course. This will allow you to raise her as your child, rather than have to try and build a relationship with someone who is essentially a stranger.”

The woman perked up, and Zeus’s interest was piqued. “What do you mean?” They said it simultaneously. I’m getting worried.

Hades answered. “Rebirth, but a little different. Think of it like a reset. Her life will restart, her memories will be wiped. She will be a hatchling again. It’s not very difficult to do, and I should apologize for what happened.”

Wait! “What happens to me!?”

Hades stared at me for a second. “Ah, I suppose I should tell you then. Even if you did just manage to be rid of a contract, and what you got out of me beforehand. This body will live on, with your memories. It will be a soulless husk, but will live. You will have your memories wiped, Zeus is here so our combine power can wipe the memories of being beyond the status of mortal.”

That’s not as bad as I thought it would be. “So, what happens if I ever meet myself?” Hades scratched his chin, but couldn’t find an answer. “You don’t know? I won’t fight back. It’s not like I’ll win anyways.”

The woman got up, and said something before she walked out. “I’ll be right back. Keep her here please.”

What’s she doing? We all waited, but I’m not really sure why the gods would be so involved. I guess I could see Hades. He did mess up, but why Zeus? Why is he here?

Would it be bad to ask? “How come you’re sitting around here Zeus?” He ignored me. I guess I only really matter to a god when it’s convenient then.

Some time passed before she came back, and she had an egg… I don’t even get to say goodbye to Miles then… Although, maybe I’m not really saying goodbye. Hades said I’ll be here, it just won’t be me.

Maybe I should be scared? I did come into this expecting it to be a throw away life anyways. This is a chance to truly live then. No contracts, no worries, and not much fear… I’m going to be a dragon, so I’ll be an immortal. Something like this has never even been a thought in my mind. I’m terrified, but relieved at the same time.

She walked up with egg. “We will not discuss this, but please hurry up.”

Hades moved his head to signal Zeus. “I’ll need your help with this.”

Zeus got up and clapped his hands. “Very well, let us be done with this so I can get back to work.”

Hades put his hand on the egg, and Zeus put his hand on my head… Sudden would describe what is happening. I could feel a sharp pain, and then nothing at all. I hope at some point I can meet myself. It’d be nice to hear about the adventures she would have without having to worry.

Warm, cold, unpleasant, upset… These are the first things that I could think of. I don’t know what’s going on. I was cold, and very upset about it. I couldn’t see, but I could hear. I remember crying out, then I started feeling warm. At some point I remember tasting, milk? I’m still confused, I was… What was I doing? I don’t, understand?

The milk taste was periodic, but I couldn’t say how far apart it was. I could see after some time passed. I don’t know how long, but the first thing I saw was a large dragon with black and red scales. It was staring at me. It said something, I couldn’t understand it; but it sounded very happy. It backed up, and I felt like I needed to move to it. I tried walking, but just felt over. I cried out, the noise was high pitched but short. The dragon nudged me back up with its nose. I shook my legs, and that’s when I felt four of them… This all feels weird. I did manage to make my way towards them, but I was doing a strange waddle.

I got to this dragon and I felt like I accomplished something. It said something else, while I couldn’t understand. I liked the way it sounded. I sat on my hind legs and looked around. I was in a cave. There was an entrance, and by it was a tall man. His hair was dark and he had a large beard. He nodded and then vanished in a puff of black smoke. Who was he?

The dragon barked a noise at me and started walking deeper into the cave. I felt the need to follow, and I waddled after it. Stumbling and slipping all the way.
