Kendra woke up whimpering and crying. She was hurting so badly and felt like she was going to throw up too.
She slowly struggled to get out of bed. She was so weak it was hard to stand, so she had to crawl to the bathroom. Once there, she threw up everything she had eaten last night before almost passing out on the floor.
When she began to shake with cold, she knew she had to make it back to bed somehow. So, she pulled herself up onto her knees once more and crawled back into the bedroom. As she passed by the desk, she reached up and grabbed her cellphone which lay by her purse. She made it to the bed but had no energy to get back on it, so she just pulled the blanket down on to the floor and bundled up.
Thinking she should call someone because this wasn’t like any flu she had ever had, she unlocked her phone. Her finger shook as she hovered over Kimmy’s number, but she hesitated.
What if it is just the flu and I scare my sister for nothing?
Giving a shaky sigh, she lightly shook her head. “Oh Kendra, be honest with yourself. You want that hunky vampire by your side, cuddling you and making it all better. Yeah,” she snorted, “after the things he said to you the other night, do you really think that is going to happen?”
She knew it wouldn’t.
It didn’t stop the need she felt for him all the way to her soul. A need she didn’t understand because they were practically strangers!
She started to softly cry then as the pain in her body once more peaked.
“But it hu-hurts so ba-badly! I ju-just want him! I don’t kn-know why!” She wailed as she continued to cry from the pain.
After laying there for a long time, shivering and longing for her Angel with her very being, she made her decision.
So, lifting her phone in a shaking hand, she found his number. Kimberly had given her all the brothers numbers to her and hit call.
“What!” Tobias hissed into the phone. Probably from being woken up a three o’clock in the morning.
“To-Tobias, it’s me Ke-Kendra. I-I know I pr-probably shouldn’t have called y-yo-ou, but I need someone to stay with m-me. I’m s-so sick, h-hurt so b-bad, and I'm so c-cold,” she whispered.
There was nothing but silence.
“To-Tobias?” She whimpered.
“You’re right, you shouldn’t have called me. You should have called your sister,” he agreed.
“I just d-didn’t want to w-worry her,” she whispered. Then, with a sob, she hung up.
She decided right then and there he really didn’t care anything for her. Her heart was broken, and she began to sob once more. Wrapping herself in her blanket she cried herself back to sleep.
She was awakened up by a knocking on her door. Prying her eyes open she groaned as the pain once more hit her full force. Someone knocked again, then she heard voices.
“Are you sure this is her room?”
“Yes sir, this is the one we have her down as being in.”
“I didn’t see her car. Maybe she left.”
“I’m sure I saw her come in earlier. Don’t think she was feeling too well though.”
“Oh, and why do you say that?”
“The gentleman that was with her looked as if he was practically carrying her. Although, he only stayed a few moments.”
“Well, let us in and we’ll take it from here.”
She heard a key turn in the lock, and then a man’s footsteps.
“Kendra!” A man said.
Then a shadow fell over her where she lay on the floor. She squinted up. “Leo?”
“Yes Kendra, it’s me. Let’s get you back on the bed,” he murmured softly. “How are you feeling?”
“I hurt so bad Leo. It’s like someone tried to rip my body limb from limb. My eyes hurt, my head hurts and…and I think I’m gonna throw up now!”
Leo reached down to help her, grabbing hold of her shoulders to sit her up. Feeling the burning sensation on her skin had her screaming.
“What’s wrong?” Leo fretted. “Did I hurt you?”
“Touch… it hurts Leo!” She cried.
She watched as Leo stiffened, his face going blank.
“Kendra honey, what do you mean by touch hurts?” Leo asked her.
She whimpered, thinking he was mad at her.
“I-I don’t know. J-Jarod tried to pick me up in the alley and his touch hurt, so does yours. It feels like fire burning my skin,” she told him as she once more whimpered, scared now. “I-Is there something bad wrong with me Leo, am I d-dying?”
Leo looked up at someone behind him. “Maybe you should try picking her up but tell me something first. Did you bite her?”
Oh, I would know that voice anywhere. Kendra thought. Tobias is here.
“Well, you’re the only other one that I know of that has come into contact with her since she’s been here this time,” Leo said. “Well, except for the one she was hunting, so it has to be you.”
“Maybe it is the vampire she’s been out hunting,” Tobias hissed.
Leo turned back to her. “Kendra, have you caught the vampire you’re here after yet?”
“Yeah, earlier,” she told him. “It was rough work, feeling like I do.”
“If it had been him it would have stopped with his death because she’d human,” Leo turned to tell Tobias. “Now it’s back to you.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about! You’ve let Mutter and her matchmaking take your mind over,” Tobias hissed. “I don’t need this, I’m out of here!”
Suddenly Leo was gone from her side, and he had Tobias by the arm twisting it. They were both red-eyed, their fangs shining, their faces morphed into that of their vampire.
“You listen to me well Bruder,” Leo hissed, “she might be your Geliebte, (Beloved) and you will treat her as such if it is proven. If she can’t stand your touch either, then we will call Mutter for her help. Now, you will sit your butt down over there in that chair and hold her until she is better if she is!”
Tobias hissed as he twisted this way and that, trying to get loose and failing. “Nein! I will not! This isn’t right, you can’t force me!”
“Ja I can Bruder, and I will,” Leo told him in a cold tone.
Kendra whimpered again as nausea hit her once more. So, she began to quickly crawl toward the bathroom. Once there, she dry-heaved until her ribs felt like they were breaking. Finally, it was over, and she pulled herself up, brushed her teeth and staggered for the door.
“See Leo, she’s up and walking around. She’s perfectly fine, so I can leave,” Tobias hissed as he began to rise from the desk chair he now sat in.
Leo hissed back, and Tobias quickly sat back down
Leo then turned to Kendra. His eyes were now grayish looking, but his face was back to normal. He gave a sigh and straightened from where he had been propped against the wall to move closer to her.
“I want to try touching you again Kendra. Just to see if it will hurt, alright?” Leo said softly.
She gave him a nod okay.
He reached out and lay a finger on the back of her wrist.
Kendra barely held back a scream as pain moved through her hand. While everything else seemed to have mellowed, the touching thing seemed even worse than before.
When he removed his finger, she saw she now had a red mark where is finger had laid. It looked just like a burn.
Leo frowned down at the mark on her skin.
“Okay, that means nobody can touch you until…” Leo glanced over at Tobias.
Kendra followed his gaze.
Tobias sat facing the wall, a mutinous look on his face and his arms crossed over his chest.
Kendra would have laughed at how childish he looked if she hadn’t feared him being even more angry with her.
Leo cleared his throat, drawing her attention back to him, as he once more looked at Kendra. “I want you to try touching grumpy over there now. Let’s just see how that goes, okay?”
“Do I have to?” She whispered as she looked down. “He’s really mad at me right now.”
“I don’t think it’s you he’s mad at,” Leo reassured her. “I think it’s himself he’s mad at, but ja, you do.”
So, with a sigh, she very carefully made her way across the room on shaking legs to where Tobias sat looking at the wall. When she reached over and touched his hand he jerked, like she had been the one to burn him.
He then turned his head to look at her.
“Did it hurt Kendra?” Leo asked.
Kendra shook her head. In fact, the closer she got to Tobias the more her bad feelings went away, all of them.
“Good,” Leo said as he smiled. “Now, Tobias be a good boy and let her sit on your lap. I’ll go find her something to eat and drink.”
Tobias turned his head to frown at his brother.
“Why do I need to sit on his lap? Why can’t I just get into bed?” Kendra asked in an almost whining tone as she stared at Leo.
It's true that I would love to sit on Tobias’s lap, she thought, maybe even snuggle and kiss too, but he had to want those things too.
“Because the closer you are to him, the better you will begin to feel,” Leo explained. “Now sit!”
Kendra did as she was told and sat. She didn’t need two vampire males mad at her!
Kendra looked at Tobias and whispered, “How did you do that?”
“Do what?” He asked, still not looking at her.
“Make all the pain leave?
Tobias almost gave himself whiplash turning to look at her then. “What did you say?”
“I said the pain is gone, all of it,” she repeated. “My headache, the body aches, the pain in my eyes, even my nausea. How did you do it?”
He groaned as he wrapped his arms around her and buried his face in her hair.
She stiffened, wondering what was going on. Not that she was complaining, she loved the feel of him wrapped around her.
“It’s true, it’s all true. I didn’t want to believe it since you’re a hunter and because you’re human but it’s true,” he said as he groaned again. Then breathing deeply, his nose still buried in her hair, he murmured, “You smell so good!”
She couldn’t help it, she giggled as she told him, “Well, so do you.”
He raised up his head. “What do I smell like? Leo said that you told him and Falco that they smell like peppermint.”
“They do, and so do you, faintly. Mostly though, you smell like cinnamon, my most favorite thing in the world. Well, that and banana pudding.”
She giggled again. “Yeah, one of my most favorite things, not that you smell like banana pudding,” she said. Then she sighed, gazing into his eyes as she asked, “So, are you not mad at me anymore?”
“Nein, I’m not mad,” he said and her mind eased. “I was being stupid I suppose by trying to ignore what was right in front of me. I mean, I should have accepted the fact that you didn’t smell like a hunter to me. That should have been my first clue. Instead, I was being stupid and scared.”
“Ah… Angel, it’s okay to be scared. I was scared too because I was having all these weird feeling I had never had before, and it was for a vampire. Someone I have been taught to hate all my life. Yet I couldn’t find it in me to feel anything but…” she stopped and felt heat fill her face.
The motel room door opened. Never had she been so glad to see someone as she was to see Leo right then.
“So, have we kissed and made up yet?” Leo asked.
Tobias ignored him.
Leo looked at her and laughed. “Well, something obviously happened since Kendra is all red-faced. Anyway, it’s too early for anything much to be open. So, I bought you some water and snacks at the convenience store on the corner.”
Leo then lay the snacks on the table.
Kendra grabbed the water first. She almost chugged it, before picking up a pack of donuts. Opening the donuts, she said, “Thank you, Leo. How come you’re here though? I mean, I called Tobias…?”
“He called me,” Leo answered. “He said there was something wrong with you. Then he said I should go check on you because for some reason you must not want your sister to know since you didn’t call her.”
“Oh, yeah. Well… I didn’t want to worry her if it was just the flu, and I really thought that was all it was,” she told Leo. “Then yesterday, I became sicker and sicker and when Jarod touched my arms it burned. That’s when I began to think maybe it wasn’t flu after all. I called Tobias because I thought maybe I really did need a doctor. I didn’t want to worry Kimmy until I knew if there was something to worry about. I know it was a stupid reason, but there it is all the same.”
“So, why Tobias then,” Leo asked. “Since you seemed to think he was mad at you?”
Kendra gave a sigh and took another drink of water. “I just, I have this weird feeling when he’s around. I have this need to be closer, to…” she stopped, feeling another blush heat her cheeks. She then whispered, “Anyway, for some reason I just felt the need to have him with me I suppose.”
Leo didn’t say anything for a moment, then he stood up. “I think the two of you have a lot to talk about, so I’ll go now. Tobias, figure this out and then call Mutter, she has another girl for you to meet tonight.”
“What about that girl she has for you to meet?” Tobias asked.
Leo hissed. “Oh, I met her last night. Such a lovely girl, but never knows when to stop giggling.”
Kendra looked back and forth between the two of them. Feeling jealous, she fixed her gaze on Tobias as she asked, “What girl?”
Tobias frowned. “Since Falco found wedded bliss, Mutter wants us all “happily married and giving her grand-babies”. So, she’s practically kidnapping women off the streets to meet the four of us who aren’t taken.”
Kendra’s brain never had time to engage before her mouth opened and she exclaimed, “Well, she can stop looking for you a woman Angel because you are mine and I don’t share!”
When she realized what she’d said she covered her mouth with her hand.
Tobias stared at her wide-eyed.
“Have fun you two,” Leo said with a laugh.
Then he quickly made his way out the door.
“Yes, I am Kendra,” Tobias agreed. “Leo is right, we need to talk.”
