Jack stopped talking for a moment until the doctor was forced to ask.
“Is something wrong?”
“No. It’s just that the next part of my story is a little more...personal, let’s say. I have not spoken about it in a long time.” Jack said.
“You know you can tell me anything, but only if you feel comfortable doing so.” Emily said.
Jack nodded and thought for a moment.
She was giving him an out, but desperately hoping that he didn’t take it. In many cases pressing for details could cause some to shut down, and over the years Emily found that when she gave a patient an option they would usually continue.
This could be the crack in the armor Emily was hoping for. If he was serious and willing to share a very personal and meaningful event, it could be a breakthrough in his healing.
“Do you want to take a break?” She said.
“No. It’s better if I get through it now. In some aspects this was a turning point for me in several different ways. Lets continue”
Jack took a deep breath and his face became solemn. The doctor could tell that he was about to enter a painful area and she couldn’t help but feel a little excited. These were often the times when real progress was made. Emily was swelling with anticipation.
