Chapter14: Death To Traitors

I hung sprawled over Brady’s shoulder as he stubbornly took me away from the apex away from the battle waged by witches who levitated over and threw fire bolts at the were-people who were fighting back on all fours.

I searched the crowd for Dani first and when I couldn’t find her I fell in a state of panic. I begged for Brady to put me down, he didn’t comply as he fought witches through the Luna quarters.

I saw my family’s werewolf forms fighting in the crowd without Dani in sight eventually surprising Brady and myself I scram loudly as I maneuvered around his neck and freed myself from him

“How did you do that?” Brady asked astonished

I felt my claws coming out and gums itching right where my fangs should be “I’m going back I have to save Dani”

“She’s safe I made sure of it.”

That halted my next step “What do you mean, how?”

“I have Tyler keeping her safe” Brady’s expression was stupidly convinced that his friend would keep Dani safe but this was Tyler he hated me. Always had and even more so now that’d I’d wronged his best friend. I genuinely couldn’t picture him keeping Dani safe.

Not in this lifetime

“Tyler? Are you serious, he’ll kill her he hates me and he’s your best friend” I itched to punch him on his pectoral muscles, but i managed to turn and take my itch to punch something-someone-the fields.

“I’ll take him to safety at the heart of the Luna floor. Alpha” I turned to see Mr. Hannez behind me bowing to Brady, referring to him as Alpha when he wasn’t even coronated yet.

Brady heaved a sigh of relief. He then pulled my face up close and lay a kiss in between my eyes even as I pushed him off me, he pulled me in a tight hug.

A warm hug that somehow calmed my erratically beating heart, a hug so warm it magnetically pulled my arms to wrap around him as I sobbed into his neck begging him to check on Dani.

“I have to go now” he whispered into my ear.

Mr. Hannez pulled me away by my arm “I’ll take care of him”

The Luna quarters were highly guarded with impregnable walls that wouldn’t tar down to the will of fire bolts thrown by witches. Guards were divided at every entry way so no intruders would slip in.

Our pack was the greatest and grandest in might, wealth, military forces and that was clear in the way I saw military men fighting against the witches who had somehow slipped in the corridor.

Once on the heart of the Luna floor and inside the Luna bedroom Mr. Hannez stared at me with an amused smile tugged on his lips I could see him from my peripheral as I tried to wage who was winning the fight outside on the balcony.

“If you lean any lower Mr. Larkatos you’re gonna fall.” he eventually neared me and spoke.

“I can’t believe witches exist” I said still not believing what my eyes were showing me, not believing a lot of other things.

“What do you know about witches?” he asked

I sensed an unreadable tone in his question “I don’t know what I know or don’t know.”

“You should let Brady put his mark on you an Alpha’s scent will burn witches ill intend away from you” he suggested as he turned around removing the locket with the deadly flower from his neck.

“I care more about keeping him away from me.” I snorted leaning down on the balcony watching our warriors slaying the witches.

“So say there was a way to break the bond would you be interested?” he raised one eyebrow simultaneously as he raised a brandy glass to his lips.

I swear it’s not a lie when I say I felt my heart slow, constrict in and out in that moment at the prospect of losing Brady. I tried to speak but I couldn’t get my voice out I was lost on what to say, on what it is exactly I wanted and internally I cursed myself when my lips formed words of agreement.

Agreeing to break the romantic bond the gods had put on Brady and I.

I cursed, cringed, felt the darkness looming internally I swear I could taste the distaste of my vileness on my tongue but I’d already declared my so called wish to Mr. Hannez who now was smiling to himself as he tapped on his android phone to someone he’d called a friend. Or to be more specific a ‘witch who owed him a favor’ and they were set to break it as soon as possible for a reason i didn’t even think to ask about.

I couldn’t take it back, truth is I couldn’t see Brady getting past the way I’d sinned against him, humiliated him and almost killed him. I suppose in some ways i had. His friends hated me and everyone knows the story of birds of a feather.

I swallowed the lump of instant regret in my throat, reached and gulped a glass of neat whiskey ignoring my conscience and sent a prayer to the gods to please forgive me.

Four shots and I was tipsy as fuck just as the loud knock on the door vibrated throughout the rest of the room. “She’s here” Mr. Hannez wasted no time at all getting up and haughtily opened the door.

However it wasn’t a stranger at the door, it was my best friend Danielle?

I was stunned, but it made sense; the way she was bad ass in how she’d stand up to Brad and his goons in school hell one time she even punched Tyler, the great Tyler into a nose job when we were only 16 and Tyler was like 18 and amongst other things I remembered the stoic stature she had at her execution.

“You’re the witch?” I whispered to her as I gazed between both of them

Mr. Hannez coughed into his fist “Who did you come with?”

Dani ignored him as she strode into my arms talking into my neck “I’m so glad you’re alive, its hell on earth out there I almost died babe.”

“Yes Brady almost killed you and it’s my entire fault.” I said as I examined her hands and face “oh my God Dani, I feel so bad, I ...”

She outstretched herself from my grasp and cut my apology as she placed her hand on my left shoulder “No he assured me on the mind link, he wasn’t going to do anything to me...the witches...they got to him though.” She said her voice a decibel at lower the last of her sentence

Mr. Hannez stepped closer a smile threatening to tug on his lips “got to him?” he asked a question I was just about to ask

“Malik it’s obvious you didn’t tie the bond with him..” she stated narrowing her eyes at me “people are going to blame you for this” she finished shaking her head “They will kill him...oh my! The pack!”

Brady had kissed me but that wasn’t enough-the way a mate bond tie works is that both beings must willingly kiss. The one kiss that Brady had taken from me was temporary and so was the agility and sense of sight he gained back since I wasn’t exactly willing. Thereby I was to blame.

I could only hope he’d live long enough for me to break the bond so I could run away from the stigma and have him live free from my childish acts and vile petty vendetta that truthfully didn’t make sense any longer.

“Who says tie the bond?” I mocked “Why are you talking like an old person?”

She tugged her sweater sleeves down her bloody wrists she’d always done that since ...forever when she felt insecure “ugh it’s this place, it always does this to me”

“Is he dead?” Mr. Hannez inquired with a vibrating urgency in his tone.

“If he were I’d be able to feel my own nephew” a woman’s impassionate smug voice rang from the door. She was welcomed in by Mr. Hannez who proceeded to give her a welcome that’s for the most part culturally reserved for the Alpha bloodline.

“Tell us exactly how they got to him?” she commanded an answer from Dani

“He lost his sight and balance on the fields then suffered third degree burns he’s still healing from. B-but...” she trailed off looking at me “...but to heal right for once and for all he needs to be completed.”

“Did you see which one of the witches hit him?” the witch asked

Dani shook her head speaking with a voice that creaked like the hinges of an iron gate “I-I don’t know I wasn’t on the field.”

The woman stepped forward blocking my view of Mr. Hannez as she spoke with a voice that tallied that of a mother’s murmur “He’ll be fine as long as we break the bond now” she pulled a knife from her bosom line, cut her palm and easily disposed of her own blood that trickled down her arm before it vanished by a flare of fire by the snap of her fingers.

Her irises dilated with swirling specks of red and silver, on me “The moon will accept the sacrifice after the Ares star” she lowered her normal gaze on me “Let go”

Dani used her body to block the witch’s line of vision “NO! you’re a liar a matebond can’t be broken its impossible. C’mon”she pulled my hand in hers “we must get to Brady soon.”

The witch let loose a derisive laugh “Malik understands self preservation, he’s staying with me superstar.”

She teased a speck of fire at Dani’s hand on mine.

“Ouch!” Dani’s hand sizzled before it started slowly regenerating

Our hands parted.

“Stay with me.” the monstrous witch offered me her palm to take.

To my right Dani stood with a similarly extended burnt hand, her tone warning...pleading.
