Chapter 1

I distinctly remember that there was a lot of screaming.

Screams of panic and fear as I thrashed around on the stainless steel table, as scientists with stark white coats blemished by the blossoms of my blood, circled around like over eager vultures, armed with syringes and scalpels, ready to pick my body apart. Shouts in a tongue I didn’t understand as the rough handed general clothed in darkness barked commands which resulted in my hair being yanked back whilst he delivered blows to my face, my torso, my neck. Somebody close to me had been wailing, a high desperate sound, but I never found out who. Murmurs filled the dimly lit chamber. They strapped me down.

Needles were one by one pressed into my veins and muscles. Ghostly substances burnt their way into my system, delving deeper and deeper until each heartbeat seared. All the while the white robed men and women asked me questions, what does it feel like? Are you in pain? Yes, I wanted to say, yes it burns. But I couldn’t find the words. My mind had whited out, had abandoned me in a situation in which it hadn’t been able to cope. I didn’t understand why this was happening, but I didn’t beg, or even ask. These people didn’t respond kindly to weakness.
These people didn’t respond kindly to anything.

The whole thing was terrifying and disorientating. The strobe lights above me flared violently in and out of existence without warning, rendering me blind. Blood from a slice on my forehead was pooling in my mouth hindering my already frantic breathing. There was a rain that I could periodically feel slipping across my already blood slicked chest before that too disappeared, only to be replaced by the roar of a flame, then the dry hiss of a sandstorm. Walls began to close in on me, entombing me forever in my nightmares, my heart undergoing self destruction in my chest, a pressure building agonisingly in my ears as I screamed and screamed and screamed. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t escape, I could only wait for the end.

Then the walls snap shut, my bones shatter and I wake up.
