Jason threw me to the floor but I barely noticed, I was too caught up in the sight of Asher. He looked horrible with his black eye, bruised body, and terrified expression, but I was relieved to see him alive.
“Liza.” He whispered in a broken, raspy voice. I saw guilt and regret written all over his face.
“Asher.” I whispered back, tears welling up in my eyes. I forgot all about where we were and who we were with. Everything just disappeared until all that was left was Asher and I.
Even though we were in a dangerous situation I noticed the hole in my heart fill now that I was reunited with my mate, and a little jolt of happiness shot through me.
But in an instant I was brought back to reality when the person I hated most spoke.
“This isn’t some happy reunion you stupid kids.”
Leave it to Jason to point out the obvious.
As if he had heard my thoughts, his head snapped in my direction and in the blink of an eye his fist was connecting with my face.
I yelped out in pain as the crack of my jaw echoed through the small basement, and Asher let out a deep, deathly growl that made me shiver in fear. He was urgently fighting against his restrains but he was too weak to shift or beak free.
I desperately scanned the room for anything to use as a weapon to fight back, and my eyes landed on something I didn't expect.
Madison wasn’t smirking like she usually did when I was getting beat. This time she was actually cowering away from Jason in fear. What changed?
My thoughts were cut short when Jason pounced on me, pinning me to the ground while he began punching me in the stomach.
My first thought was that he was just trying to hurt me, but when he didn’t target any other part of my body I realized that he was purposely punching only my stomach.
He was trying to kill the baby.
I tried to push him off, but he wouldn't budge so I instinctively covered my stomach in an attempt to protect the life growing inside of it.
“Stop! Get off of her!” Asher kept yelling, but it didn’t do anything. Jason just kept beating me until I was on the brink of passing out from the pain.
Everything around me was unfocused and my whole body began to go numb until he was suddenly ripped off of me.
At first I thought Asher had broken out of his restraints, but I was proven wrong when I saw Madison holding Jason down.
“You’re going to kill her!” She screamed as she roughly pushed his shoulders to the floor.
“What the hell are you doing Madison?” Jason yelled right back.
“I’m doing the right thing.” She told him, her voice strong.
While they were arguing I crawled over to Asher and unchained him. He instantly scrambled out of the chair and picked me up, whispering a desperate apology in my ear over and over.
Suddenly there was a loud bang as the chair Asher had previously been in was thrown across the room by Jason.
I looked over and saw Madison crying and crawling over to the old wooden stairs. She was running away from Jason for once.
But he didn’t seem to notice because he was too busy storming over to Asher and I.
Naturally Ash put me down and protectively stepped in front of me, ready to protect me with his life, and Jason just smirked, knowing Asher was too weak to protect himself, let alone me.
Even though my stomach was killing me and I could barely stand, I mustered up all the energy I had and pushed it into my hands before willing the energy out of me and shooting it through the air as quick as lightning, right into Jason.
He was thrown back into the wall by the force and slumped down to the floor in a heap of unconsciousness.
With no more energy in me my legs gave out and I fell to the floor as well.
Slowly, all the sound in the room faded away until I couldn’t hear anything. I closed my eyes and the last thing I remember before blacking out was someone tightly gripping my hand.
Beep beep beep.
What is that annoying noise?
Beep beep beep.
Okay someone needs to turn that thing off.
Beep beep beep.
I opened my mouth to protest against the loud beeping but nothing except a hoarse whisper left my mouth, my throat felt like sandpaper.
I took a second to gain some energy, and then tried again.
“Will someone turn off that horrible beeping sound? I’m trying to sleep.” I whispered roughly, but at least I got the words out.
I heard someone chuckle and another person let out a long sigh.
I wonder who those people were.
I was exhausted so I tried to ignore everything and go back to sleep, but curiosity got the best of me and I ended up blinking my eyes opened.
A bright white light shone directly into my eyes and I quickly snapped them shut, hissing in pain.
After a few moments I slowly and cautiously opened my eyes again and let them adjust to the light before looking around.
I was in a room with white walls, white furniture, and a white bed that I was currently using.
This certainly wasn't my room.
Someone cleared their throat and I snapped my head in their direction. I forgot that I wasn’t alone.
My eyes landed on Becca, my mom, and finally Asher.
Becca and mom were standing at the foot of my bed while Ash was sitting on a chair right beside me.
As I studied him, he grabbed my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze.
I noticed that he didn’t have a black eye anymore but he still had that exhausted look he wore when I first saw him in Jason’s basement.
He was looking at me but he wouldn’t meet my eyes, he looked really guilty.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him.
His eyes widened in surprise, like he didn’t think I would talk to him. After a few moments he shook his head and muttered “Nothing.” Still refusing to meet my eyes.
I pulled my hand out of his and lifted it to grab his chin and turn his head so his gaze had to meet mine, but even then his eyes darted in every direction.
“What did I do to make you hate me so much?” I asked, my voice hurt and confused as I dropped my hand from his face.
I tried to think of anything that I could have possibly done to make him hate me so much that he couldn't even look me in the eyes.
He frantically searched my face, then finally met my eyes. Guilt, regret, and confusion were the emotions that stuck out the most.
“What are you talking about Liza? I could never hate you.” He reassured me in a soft voice.
I rolled my eyes, “Why are you acting like this then?”
He opened his mouth like he was about to respond but then quickly snapped it shut, changing his mind.
He repeated this a couple more times before he sighed and said “I made an unforgivable mistake.”
What did he do?
“I sure it’s not that bad.” I tried to reassure him but he quickly shook his head.
“You’re wrong.” He stated, turning away so I couldn’t see his face.
“It couldn’t have been that bad. What did you do?” I asked.
“I abandoned you, I didn’t let you explain, I didn’t trust that you stayed loyal to me, and worst of all I put you in danger and almost got you killed!” He listed, getting more worked up as he spoke.
I shook my head “This isn’t your fault, I chose to step right into Jason’s trap. I was the stupid one that didn’t tell anyone what was going on -”
I was cut off by Asher rising his hand as if to say enough.
“I don’t want to hear any of that, this isn’t your fault.” He stated in a stern voice, leaving me no room to argue.
I grumpily nodded my head and crossed my arms over my chest childishly.
“You forgot to pout too.” He teased, cracking half a smile.
“I missed you.” I whispered, my eyes brimming with tears but I quickly blinked them away. I'd only make him feel worse if he knew how much of a mess I was without him.
“I missed you too. I’m so sorry.” His whispered back, his voice cracking.
He brought my hand, that was still clasped in his, up to his lips and kissed my knuckles before gently lying it back down on the bed, this time letting it go.
Then he stood up and looked down at me, guilt still all over him.
“I have to go take care of some business, I’ll be back in a while.” He told me softly before leaving the room without another word.
Why did it feel like he was saying goodbye?
I didn’t have too much time to dwell on that though because someone came up beside me and pulled me into a bone crushing hug.
I immediately knew it was Becca when she squealed “I’m so glad you’re okay!”
Next my mom came up beside me and gave me a much gentler embrace.
“I was so worried about you. I thought I lost you for good this time.” She whispered in my ear before kissing my cheek and letting go.
I flashed them both a smile, “Thanks guys, but I’m alrig-”
The door flew open before I could finish my sentence and Jay rushed in.
“You’re alive!” He exclaimed, running over to me and pulling me into one of his famous bear hugs, or should I call them wolf hugs?
“Yes Jay, we’ve already established that.” I told him, rolling my eyes, but I couldn’t keep the amused smile off my face.
Jay might look like the hulk but he was really a marshmallow on the inside.
“By the look Asher had on his face when he left the room, I thought something terrible had happened to you.” Jay explained.
My face twisted in confusion but I nodded like I understood.
I looked at the three people surrounding my bed and smiled for the millionth time since I woke up. I was so lucky to have people that truly cared about me.
But my smile soon faded when a nagging question popped into my head.
“What happened?” I finally asked.
All three of them looked at me in confusion but after a moment realization dawned on them.
They all looked over at each other like they were having a silent conversation, and then Jay nodded and mom and Becca left while He sat down on the end of my bed.
“Okay so what do you remember?” He asked.
I thought for a moment before replying “I got a call from Jason saying that if I didn’t come to his house, he would kill Asher. So I did as I was told and rushed over to his house without a second thought.
"When I got there Madison answered the door and ushered me in. Then Jason took over and made me go to the basement with them.
“When we got there I saw Ash all beat up and chained to a chair, Jason said some stuff and then started beating me. He tried to kill the baby. I guess he somehow found out that it was his.
“Then out of nowhere Madison fought him off long enough for me to untie Ash. And the last thing I remember before passing out was using my powers to take out Jason."
Jay didn’t say anything throughout my explanation, and when I was done he sat back and took in what I said before he started talking.
“You probably think Madison ran away because she didn’t want to get hurt from Jason right?” He began, pausing for me to nod before he continued.
“Madison was really going to get help. She ran over to the pack house and started begging for someone to come with her. When no one took her serious she explained that you and Ash were in danger. Becca and I rushed over to Jason’s house.
“When we arrived Jason was already unconscious, and Asher was carrying you out the door.”
Jay paused again so I could process what he was saying.
Why did Madison help? What did they do to Jason? And better yet, what happened to my baby?
"What happened when you got there?" I asked after taking a moment to compose myself.
“We finished Jason off and brought you and Ash back to the pack house. You don’t need to worry about him ever again.” He answered calmly.
“You killed him?” I shouted.
When Jay nodded I felt a weight lift off my shoulder, but at the same time my chest felt tight. Jason was the only parent I ever had, even if he was horrible to me.
I’m glad I don’t have to deal with him anymore but it also hurt that he was dead all because of me.
“It was for the best, don’t feel guilty.” Jay reassured me when he caught on to what I was feeling.
I nodded. He was right, the world was a better place without Jason in it.
After a few moment of silence Jay spoke up, “Do you have any more questions?”
I took a deep breath before asking the question that had been bothering me the most.
“Is my baby okay?”
