The warm feeling of lips pressed onto the back of my hand is the first thing I notice as I come to consciousness. The quiet murmur of a voice is the next thing I notice as I begin to pry my eyelids-heavy, like a ton of bricks-open.
“Mae?” I hear him call my name.
“Where am I?” I ask, my voice gravelly.
“I need to stop waking up in hospitals,” I say with a smile.
“Yeah,” Rolan says with a chuckle, “It’s a pretty bad habit you’ve picked up. I let out a strained laugh. My throat feels like I’ve been swallowing sand and my lungs burn and ache with the effort of breathing.
Eric walks in, a clipboard in hand. “Princess Mae, it’s good to see you finally awake.” He says as he flicks through a couple of papers.
“What happened?” I ask. Rolan squeezes my hand tightly and it’s only now that I see all the bandages wrapped around his arms.
“You were out with Vrey, at the mall, there was, there was a fire.”
Of-course the fire, my arm, being paralysed, Lycurgus! I push myself up suddenly. Both Rolan and Eric rush to help me.
“Mae, be careful.” Rolan scolds.
“I need to tell you something.” I say, a hint of urgency in my voice.
“Eric needs to do some tests-” I interrupt.
“It’s really important Rolan and your dad may need to know as well.”
“I’ll call him, but as we’re waiting Eric can do the test. I need to make sure you’re okay.” I nod my agreement.
It seems like hours before Rolan tells me his dad has arrived. Angela, Vrey and Vrey’s mother,Carlia, arrive as well. They file into the room, the air becoming thick and heavy as they do so. It takes a second before anyone begins to talk and it’s Vrey who breaks the awful silence.
“I’m sorry,” Vrey says as she bites her lip nervously, ” I thought once you’d heard the alarm. You would have gotten out but I couldn’t find you anywhere.” A small sob falls from her chest.
“It’s fine.” I say, ” It wasn’t your fault.” I say.
“I should have checked up on you. We could have avoided this.”
“It’s not your fault... but I think I know whose fault it is.”
“What do you mean, dear?” Mrs Clarke asks.
“I well, uh... I’m sorry, I don’t know how to start.” I say, looking down at the sheets covering my body.
“It’s fone, take your time, you’ve been through a lot. Try to start from the beginning, Mae. Any detail will be very useful in catching the culprit of these atrocious crimes.” Carlia speaks this time.
I take a deep breath, ” A couple, maybe weeks ago, a man came into my room and told me that I should keep away from you guys. He said that your weren’t the right company for me to be keeping and uh, um, a little later he visits me in hospital and left this on my arm, a couple days before the incident at the mall.” I show them my arm. The letters have slowly begun to fade but could still be seen.
“My sweet, did he give you a name?” Rolan asks, squeezing my hand reassuringly.
“Yes, he said his name was, Lycurgus.”
Mr Clarke’s head snaps towards me and his eyes squint slightly, “What did he look like?” He demands.
“Uh, he’s very thin and gaunt, quite tall with a white suit on. And he carries a black cane with him. And his eyes were, like, luminous green, like a glowing luminous green.”
All five people in the room give each other a worried glance. “That’s not good,” Vrey says.
“Why isn’t-” Mr Clarke interuppts me.
“And you didn’t think to mention this to anyone?” He asks with a hint of anger in his voice.
“He threatened to kill my family, I didn’t know what else to do.”
“Fool,” He says, “The man was bluffing.”
I look at Mr Clarke in disbelief. “He’s blown up two buildings, I don’t think he was bluffing.” I reply.
“Your refusal to speak.” He says as he points an accusing finger and takes a threatening step towards me. “Over a mere threat has cost the lives of my pack members. My son could have been badly injured because of you!”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for this to happen.” Mr Clarke’s eyes turn black and veins begin to protrude from his neck. Angela rushes to calm him down, taking his face between gentle hands, whispering to him quietly. He nods and then exits, slamming the door behind him.
There’s a moment before Carlin speaks up, asking, “Are you positive his eyes were luminous green.”
I nod, “Is that a problem.”
“Yes, a very big one.” Carlos replied, “When a wizards of witches eyes go that colour it means they’ve lost control of their magic, making them unpredictable and before turning to Angela. “And if the magic is feeding on a strong emotion like anger or jealousy that could be catastrophic.”
“Can someone please explain?” I ask.
Vrey speaks this time, “Magic is like a fuel and that fuel can affect things , one being your emotions. If you lose control of your magic whilst angry or jealous or wanting revenge the magic will consume you. It will fuel your emotions to the point where all logic goes out the window. Everything you’ll be focused on is the pain you feel, Why you feel it and getting revenge.”
“So Lycurgus is...angry?” I ask.
“But why?” I ask. Vrey shrugs.
“Can this man potentially take back control of his magic? Maybe then, after he is sane, we can reason with him.” Rolan asks.
“It’s very unlikely. Depending on how long he’s been like this, it may be impossible.” Vrey responds.
“I just don’t understand why he would come to me about you guys. I mean practically nothing to you.”
Angela, the queen, steps forward with a small, understanding smile. “Mae,” she says, “You mean more to us than you realise.”
“No I’m not.” I say.
“An alpha becomes significantly stronger when they meet their mates both mentally and physically. If suddenly they’re taken away from them, they become weak and unstable and without an alpha the pack crumble. It’d be absolute chaos.”
I never realised how much I meant, how significant my life is. People would become packless. Everything these people know, their homes, their culture would fall. They depend on Rolan and I coming together.
“I think Rolan and I need to talk.” I say.
“Yes,” Angela looks towards her son with a slight glare. “I believe a conversation is due between you and my son. Things need to be put right.” As Angela walks out she smacks Rolan upside the head. I almost burst out laughing when Rolan begins to rub the back of his neck with a slightly pained expression on his face. “Now come on ladies, we have stuff to be getting on with.”
There is a moment before either one of us speaks and it’s Rolan who breaks the silence first.
“I-uh-” Rolan runs a bandaged hand through his dishevelled hair. “I guess I should start off by saying, I’m sorry.”
“I know that ,Rolan, I know that your sorry but I want to know why you did it in the first place.”
“I thought that I didn’t need you, that I didn’t need a mate.” He starts, ” I thought that I could just fool around with whoever I wanted. I thought that I didn’t need any relationships because I would only let the person that I cared about down so I just kidded myself into thinking I didn’t need your love. I’m so sorry, Mae. I’m so fucking sorry. I can prove to you I can be everything you need, please I’m so sorry.”
“Yes, you can be everything I need.” I say, “ You can be caring and thoughtful and kind and loving and then you can be that fucking asshole who goes around thinking he’s the shit and that he can get everything without giving anything back. I don’t want to be with you if I don’t know who I’m gonna get. The guy who is willing to sacrifice his life with me and die with me or the guy who goes round fucking teachers, not giving a shit. I not gonna put myself through that.” I’m almost yelling at this point with tears streaming down my face. “How am I going to know?” I ask, voice barely a whisper. “
“I’ve let someone down before and I don’t want to let you down.” He whispers with a hoarse voice, shaking from his overwhelming emotions.
“What have you done that’s so bad, Rolan?Try to tell, make me understand. I want to make us work, I do, but I want to understand. I might be able to help you with whatever you’re going through. Why do you blame yourself so much? Why are you like this? Why?” I ask desperately.
“I was the reason my twin brother was kidnapped.”
I just wanted to tell you guys about my plans for the books updating schedule. In a couple weeks I will have mock exams (which sucks ) so a lot of my free time will be taken up with revision, meaning I won’t be able write a lot. I’m going to try and update every week but updates might come later than that.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
