Pierce didn’t know what to make of it. Addison chose to stick by him. She wasn’t afraid of him nor was she afraid of Victor. It was brave of her. Most humans would be running for the hills about now. At that moment, he wanted to kiss her. He watched her stand up to Victor and it made his heart swell with so much love he thought it’d burst.
“Addison,” he whispered.
She glanced at him with those beautiful eyes of hers. She offered him a warm smile. Victor didn’t miss it and he scowled in frustration. He turned on his heel and walked away from them. Pierce followed him. He was eager to settle this now so he could take Addison back to the colony with him. Pierce went to the door to let Victor out. Victor stopped in the hall.
“Thanks for stopping by,” Pierce said.
“I’m not leaving this place without you,” Victor muttered.
“I won’t abandon Addison.”
The sooner the words left Pierce’s lips, Victor strolled back into the room where they left Addison. His fists were curled so tight; his knuckles were white. Pierce could feel a partial change coming from him. He ran in front of Victor and fell to his knees. Addison came to stand behind him.
“Victor, please,” Pierce said. “Please let me take care of her.”
He wasn’t in his wolf form but surrender was surrender all the same. Maybe Victor would see through this action how serious he was about Addison. Addison dropped to her knees too. Pierce knew it was because she didn’t want him to go through this alone. It only made him fall more in love with her.
Pierce bowed until his head touched the floor. “I can’t walk away from her. Don’t ask me to.”
Pierce cast a glance at her. She wasn’t looking at him. She gazed at Victor with a determined look on her face.
“If anyone should lower their head, it’s me,” she said. “I’m grateful to Pierce for a lot of things. I don’t want him to get in trouble because of me.”
“Addison…” Pierce whispered.
“Pierce shouldn’t have to lower himself because of me,” she said ignoring him.
“I’m glad you know that much.”
Pierce gasped at Victor’s hateful words. He could see the hurt in Addison’s eyes and it made him angry. There was nothing wrong with her standing up for him. If he had to lower himself for her, so be it. He couldn’t think of a cause nobler than standing up for love. He would do anything to keep her with him. Victor had no right to interfere.
“You said you wanted me to be happy,” Pierce argued. “You said you wanted me and Bryce to find mates for ourselves and be happy!”
“I didn’t mean with a wretched human,” Victor countered. “Don’t play games with me, Pierce! You knew I wouldn’t accept her! Don’t fuck with me on this!”
“I have every right to fuck with you on this!” Pierce got to his feet. “Because of your foolishness and ignorance, I must lose the best thing that’s ever happened to me! You have no right to interfere with my life when you’ve been seeing Hadria all this time! You only had eyes for Hadria! You didn’t give a damn about me when she came along! Now I’m in a happier place you want to interfere! That’s bullshit!”
Victor went silent. Pierce swiped a tear as it slid down his cheek. He didn’t cry much. Hell, he hadn’t cried since his dad died. He had to be strong for Bryce and in case, Victor didn’t survive his injuries. There was no room to cry. He had been loyal to Victor all this time. He sacrificed so much of himself and what he wanted for Victor and the colony.
It was something he didn’t mind doing. He knew in the future they’d remember all he did for them and when he wanted something, they’d understand. He was wrong. Victor didn’t understand. Maybe he spoiled him. He gave too much of himself and now he was paying for it. He wanted to be with Addison. Why couldn’t Victor let him have this one thing?
“I’m not going to budge on this, Pierce,” Victor said. “My decision remains the same.”
“You can’t,” Pierce whispered. “You can’t keep me away from her.”
Victor ignored him. “Addison, you said someone was after you. I don’t think it’s fair to get Pierce involved but if it’s the reason you’re staying; I’ll make sure whoever it is doesn’t come near you again. In the meantime, you are to leave this place and don't come back. You aren’t to ask Pierce for help ever again nor come near him. If you return, I will kill you.”
“NO,” Pierce cried. “Addison!”
He watched her get to her feet. Time seemed to stand still for him. She turned to him and offered him a kind smile. Tears stained her beautiful face. She nodded in agreement to what Victor said. A numb feeling came over Pierce in an instant. He tried to go to her as she moved toward the door but Victor held him back.
“Thank you for your hospitality,” she said. “I’ll never forget your kindness, Pierce Halton.”
Pierce didn’t know what happened next. He saw her leave the house. He didn’t understand how he wound up on the floor nor did he recognize his own voice. The screams. The terrible screams of agonizing pain were coming from him. Victor held on to him as he cried like he never cried before in his life.
“It’s for the best,” Victor said. “For her sake and yours.”
“I hate you,” Pierce screamed. “I hate you! I’ll never forgive you for taking her away from me!”
