"He was murdered by the Blood Fang pack. Our biggest enemies."
Nova's beautiful hazel eyes grew wide. The same reaction I get from everyone I've told about my birth father.
"So on the right we have the gym, and the pool is directly across the hallway." I told her as we got to the athletics area.
She nodded, twirling a piece of her straight, medium length brown hair around her finger.
I shrugged off her sudden quietness and continued on with the tour, showing her the library and computer lab before the bell rang.
"I should get to class." Nova finally spoke, jutting her thumb over her shoulder.
"I can walk you." I offered, anything to spend just a little more time with my mate. Unfortunately we don't have any other classes together.
Nova shook her head, "It's fine, I can walk myself."
My heart dropped and my wolf howled sadly, she doesn't want to spend any more time with me?
"Bye." She muttered, not waiting for me to reply before turning and making her way down the hallway.
I watched her until she disappeared from my line of sight, confusion running through my mind. Why wouldn't my mate want to spend time with me? I thought we were having fun? Maybe I shouldn't have brought up all that stuff about my parents.
I began walking in the opposite direction from the one Nova went, not in the mood for class but also not in the mood to get a lecture for skipping class from dad. Being the alphas son, and next in line for alpha, has its downside. I have to set a good example for the rest of the pack, which means no skipping school.
All I wanted to do was hold Nova and never let her go, but she doesn't even want to spend time with me anymore.
"Why are you looking so glum?" Mason, my best friend and future beta asked, seemingly materializing out of thin air and scaring the crap out of me.
"I'm just tired." I lied.
I was so excited to tell the pack that I found my mate, but now that she might not even want me, I couldn't tell anyone. I'd never live it down if my own mate rejected me.
"I feel you man, I was up all night with Nicky." Mason gloated.
I rolled my eyes, that guy is such a man whore. Last week he was with a girl named Tiffany, and the week before that it was a Jessica. I can't wait until he finds his mate and realizes how great commitment can be. But what would I know about mates? Mine doesn't want me. The only thing keeping me going was the fact that I could possibly see her in the hallway between classes, at lunch, and every day in English.
"We better get our asses to gym before coach chews us out." Mason suggested, nudging me before speed walking in the direction of the doors leading out to the football field.
I rolled my eyes but followed close behind. Coach lecturing us was the least of my concerns right now, but I also didn't have the patience for it today.
Just as we reached the door, Mason stopped dead in his tracks and cursed under his breath.
"We forgot to change into our gym clothes." He explained, huffing out a frustrated breath.
Great, we're either going to get yelled at for not changing, or being late because we changed. It's a lose-lose situation for us.
"Well let's go get changed." I mumbled, turning on my heels and starting for the changing rooms right beside the door to the field.
We both opened our lockers and changed in record time, and just as we reached the door leading to the field, for the second time, the bell rang.
Mason and I cursed in unison before walking out onto the football turf.
"Ladies, so nice of you to join us." Coach yelled.
We joined the other guys who stood in a line facing coach, and I held my breath in anticipation for the lecture.
"How many times do I have to-"
I quickly tuned Coach Douglass out and looked around for something to entertain me. By the way he was pacing angrily in front of us, he was going to rant for quite some time.
My eyes were drawn to the window looking into a science classroom and that's when I saw her. Nova's hair shone in the sunlight pooling in from the window, and she twirled a piece around her finger. She does that a lot, I noticed her doing it in English class and during the tour too. I smiled at the cute habit my mate has. I bet she doesn't even know she's doing it.
All of a sudden my vision was taken over by the angry face of Coach Douglass and I couldn't see Nova anymore.
"Five laps Harris! Next time maybe you'll pay attention when I'm speaking!" Coach yelled, getting so close to my face that I could see every wrinkle engraved into his forehead.
"Yes coach." I muttered between clenched teeth. I wasn't mad because I had to do laps, I could easily run five laps. No, I was mad because he was blocking the view of my mate.
"Get going!" Coach yelled and I started jogging around the field without another word. Does that guy know how to speak normally? I don't think I've ever heard him use his indoor voice.
I was lost in my thoughts as I did the laps. The only time I actually focused on what was going on around me was when I snuck glances at Nova. Her concentration face was so adorable, it made my heart swell with affection. She's already so important to me and I just met her.
"Dude, you've done eleven laps, I think you're done." Mason suddenly said from beside me. I didn't even notice him come over.
"Really?" I asked skeptically. There's no way I've done that many laps without noticing.
Mason nodded, "Yeah man. Somethings got you really distracted today, care to share?"
I sighed and stopped jogging. I really don't think it would be a good idea to tell Mason about Nova.
"Like I said, I'm just tired." I repeated the lie, walking back to the rest of the class with Mason beside me.
He gave me a doubtful look but didn't push.
"Took you long enough, now get in line!" Coach yelled just as the bell for lunch rang. Talk about saved by the bell, I don't think I could stand one more second of that guy yelling.
"What crawled up his ass and died?" Josh, another member of the pack and a close friend of mine, joked.
I smiled and Mason added his own insult about coach, which I didn't quite catch because I saw a flash of shiny chestnut hair disappear into the crowd of students going towards the lunch room.
I wanted to go after her but she might not like that. Besides, I have to change and shower, I don't want to repulse her further by smelling bad.
I took the quickest shower I've ever taken, and was on my way to the cafeteria in under ten minutes. The guys complained about me leaving without them but that didn't matter right now. I just wanted to see Nova.
Once I entered the cafeteria I scanned the sea of students and smiled when I saw Nova sitting at my table. It seems as though she made friends with Kenzie, Josh's mate.
I started towards them, but thought better of it when I realized that I didn't have anything to eat. One glance at the food line was enough to tell me I wasn't getting pizza today, so I decided on going into the convenience store to get some snacks instead. That's better than nothing.
Thankfully there wasn't a line up in there and within a few minutes I'd picked out a red, cherry flavoured slushy, Hershey Kisses, and a pack of skittles.
After I paid for the food I grabbed my stuff and rushed out of the store, only to find some guy sitting next to my mate.
I marched up to the table and glared down at a guy I didn't recognize very well, he defiantly wasn't a wolf.
"You're in my spot." I spat.
The guy looked up at me, startled, and without a word he got up and left. Damn right, and he better stay away.
"Hey Kenzie." I greeted the blonde as I sat down, before focusing my attention on the beautiful girl beside me.
The way her name rolled off my tongue was amazing, it felt so right saying her it. We really are meant to be together.
She smiled up at me before training her eyes on the snacks I got for lunch.
"Want a kiss?" I offered as I ripped open the package of Hershey Kisses. I noticed her eyes linger on that specific item.
Her eyes widened in shock as her cheeks warmed, and I chocked on my spit when I realized what I just said.
"The chocolate." I clarified, scratching the back of my knock sheepishly.
She opened her mouth to protest as her cheeks cooled, but closed it when I raised an eyebrow at her. Instead she stuck her hand out and muttered a quick "Thanks." when I poured a few wrapped chocolates for her.
I smiled down at her and took a sip of my slushy.
"Who's your friend?" Josh asked Kenzie when him and Mason got to the table.
"This is Nova." She told them, and then introduced my mate to the guys.
Nova smiled politely but I noticed her tense ever so slightly, and she started twirling a lock of hair around her finger. A nervous habit, not just a regular one. Does that mean she was nervous earlier today too?
After that lunch passed quickly to my dismay, I wish I could just freeze time and be around Nova forever.
"We have drama now. Love you." Kenzie told Josh as the bell rang.
"Watch where you're going freak." A high pitch voice screeched, drawing everyone's attention.
Chantel, a popular girl with a bad attitude, was the owner of the voice. She stood in front of my pack's omega, Linsey, and glared down at the text books on the floor.
"I'm so sorry." Linsey apologized, scrambling to pick up the books and hand them to Chantel.
"Ew I don't want these now, they're covered in freak germs." Chantel whined, scrunching up her nose in disgust and gaining snickers from her friends.
"Leave her alone." A new voice spoke up, one that sent sparks shooting through my whole body.
Nova walked up to Chantel and stood in between her and Linsey.
Chantel scoffed, "And who are you?"
My amazing mate rolled her eyes as she replied, "I'm someone you don't want to mess with."
Chantel didn't reply so Nova kept going, "You know, bullying people isn't cool, it's actually really ugly and disgusting. Next time you think about putting someone down, remember that the face you make while doing it is really unattractive."
Chantel gasped and stormed away with her minions in tow. My mate actually shut her up. That's a first.
"Are you okay?" Nova asked, turning to face Linsey, who nodded yes.
"We should get to class." Kenzie suggested and all of us agreed.
Nova gave Linsey one last smile and the group all filed out of the cafeteria.
"Can I talk to you for a second?" I asked, gently grabbing my mates arm to get her attention. Sparks shot through my body at the contact.
Without a word, Nova stopped walking and looked expectantly at me to say what I wanted to say.
"You're going to be a great Luna." I said softly, tucking her hair behind her right ear.
She leaned into my touch before suddenly pulling away like I burnt her, and I scrunched my brows in confusion. I thought she'd be happy to know that I'm the future alpha of my pack. It's an honour to be a Luna.
"I'm not a Luna, Aj, my dad is the alpha of my pack which makes me next in line. I'm going to be the first alpha female in my pack's history."
I stared at her in shock and awe. She’s so amazing, but how would that work? Am I a male Luna? Is she a Luna? Or are we both alphas?
"I have to get to class." She muttered, spinning around to leave, and something behind her right ear caught my attention.
I squinted as she walked away and my blood ran cold when I finally made out what it was. A small red tattoo of a single drop of blood. She lied about where she came from and why she's here.
She's the enemy.
