In the last year I’ve gotten the ability to see visions, I almost died on multiple occasions, the boy I love is a vampire, and I lost my mother. Well, I thought I lost her until she showed up a year later as a vampire. So as you can see, my life is no cup of tea. Shall we continue where we left off?
I struggled against Anthony’s grasp, but we both knew it was useless. Tears formed in my eyes as I looked at the woman who used to be my mother, “How could you? You let me believe you were dead for an entire year. I spent months waking up with nightmares of the crash; reliving it over and over. Why didn’t you tell me?”
She turned around so our eyes met, “It wasn’t the right time. I needed to figure myself out and control my urges. I came to your brother first because I saw his pain. You had people to make you feel better, he didn’t. I should’ve told you, but I couldn’t.”
“So instead you wanted to torture me? Tell Aria and Nick to hurt me, hurt Sam, and all the innocent people they slaughtered. Anthony kidnapped my best friend and she almost died. Did you make them do all that?” I said with my anger rising. “Did you?!”
“Yes, but I didn’t think it would get this out of hand. I told them not to lay on hand on you, but they aren’t the best listeners.” Said Mom
“You aren’t my mother. Do you have any emotions at all? You hurt my friends and you hurt me. Why? Why did you have to cause me so much pain? I asked
My mom stood beside me and rested her hand on my cheek, “I will explain soon, but I have many things to get done first. Just know I did all of this for you, even if it seems like a terrible way to do it. I love you, Carly. I might be dead, but I still have feelings.”
“What’s your plan? Are you gonna turn me into a monster like Ethan?” I asked
“You little…” Began, Ethan, as my mom stopped him with her hand.
“Ethan is no monster. He wanted this life and I provided it for him. If you someday what that too, I’ll grant that wish.” Said Mom
“I will never ask you to turn me. I don’t want to be like you.” I said
“We’ll see what the future holds. But no, that is not my intention tonight, I am here to help.” Said Mom
“You have a funny way of showing it.” I said
She smiled to herself and looked me straight in the eyes, “I will give you the blood you need to heal Claire, Sam, and yourself back to full strength. I’ll get rid of the car, compel Claire’s family, and compel yours so it seems like nothing ever happened this evening.”
“Why are you suddenly wanting to save me when your minions tried to kill me earlier?” I asked
Mom sighed and ran a hand through her hair, “They took it a little rougher than I wanted, but it won’t happen again. I want you to trust me. Give me a chance and I might surprise you.”
“How can you expect me to trust you after everything you’ve done? I mean you turned your own son into a goddamn vampire. You took his life away.” I said
Ethan sighed, “Carly, it’s not like I didn’t want this. I’ve been in pain for the last year and now it’s all gone. I have mom back, I have the strength to defeat my bullies, and I can live forever. I’m not complaining.”
Then two figures approached the group, unsurprisingly it was Nick and Aria. The two looked good as new with Nick still wiping the blood from his lips. They were luminated by the streetlamp with two different emotions. Aria was furious, but made no movement toward me. While Nick was amused with my condition.
“I see I missed all the fun. Can I join?” Nick asked, reaching outward and digging a finger into my bleeding and broken leg.
He dug his fingernail deep into the cut across my leg as I screamed loudly. The only one who looked like they cared was Ethan with a flinch at my scream, but none of the others reacted. Even my mother didn’t react in a way that looked like she even cared. Before Nick could do any real damage my mother grabbed his hand and pushed him away. He tried to go for me again, but Aria held him back.
“Nick, you will keep your hands off of Carly from now on. Do you understand?” Mother warned
Nick wanted to go against what my mother said, but something made him cave. Maybe it was Aria or himself or maybe it was the look my Mother had on her face. Something about it made chills go up my back. Everything she had just said felt wrong, felt off. She was lying about something that I knew for sure.
“I will see you very soon, Carly.” Mother said as Anthony tucked two vials into my shirt pocket, “Until then I hope you can learn to understand why I did what I did.”
Before another word could escape my mouth, they were gone. Mom, Ethan, Anthony, Aria, and even Nick vanished. When Anthony’s grasp had disappeared I had nothing to keep me up so I fell straight on my broken leg. I pulled myself up so I could sit against the light pole as I stared down at the vials of blood.I wasn’t going to take my mother’s help. She didn’t deserve the satisfaction. The two vials were labeled Claire and Carly. I took mine and threw it as far into the woods as I could. When I heard the glass shatter on some rock, I sensed movement from within the car. I looked over and found Sam pulling himself out. His priority was to find me and when he noticed me under the light pole his eyes went wide.
Sam used his speed to appear next to me as he crouched down and began assessing my injuries. I quickly pushed him away as I handed him the vial of blood with Claire’s name on it. He was confused, but he knew what I was trying to say. Sam pulled Claire from the car and placed her onto the grass beside me. I exhaled the breath I didn’t know I was holding when I saw her chest rise.
Sam popped the cap off the vial and opened Claire’s mouth. He tipped the vial upside down and the blood came out like a fountain of Kool-Aid. Once the vial was empty, he closed Claire’s mouth and we watched her wounds heal. When she was taken care of he appeared next to me once again. The more he looked over my injuries, the more worried he had become.
When Sam got back to checking my injuries that is when the questioning started, “What happened when I was out? I know you didn’t just happen to land here in the crash and I know someone gave you that blood. Did anyone hurt you?”
“Anthony made the car crash and then he pulled me out of the car. He was about to end me when someone stopped him. When I saw her, I couldn’t believe my eyes. At first I thought she was a ghost, but then I realized what she really was. My mom is alive, Sam. Well, undead.” I explained
He grabbed my hand and squeezed, “Your mom’s a vampire?”
“Yeah and she turned my brother as well. She was the mastermind behind everything that has happened. She is the cause of the pain and suffering I have gone through. Before she vanished she handed me two vials of blood. That’s why I handed you a vial for Claire.” I said
“If there were two, why aren’t you healed?” Sam asked
“I threw mine across the road. I wasn’t going to give my mother the satisfaction. Claire was worse for wear than I am anyway. I would rather have her healed and ready to go then me. Besides, I’ll be fine.” I said
Sam tried to get me to allow him to use his blood to heal me, but I refused. He knew how stubborn I could be, so he let me have my way. He gave it one last shot, but I still denied the aid, “Let me heal you, Carly. I know you don’t want to give her satisfaction, but you have a broken leg and god knows what else. You need help.”
“I will get help later, but not until Claire is out of here. She is healed up, but needs her rest. Take her back to my house and then you can return for me. That way we aren’t in the middle of the road.” I said
“Are you sure it’s a good idea to go back to your house? They can get in without an invitation, you aren’t safe there.” Sam said with worry in his eyes, “We could go anywhere else and you’d have a shot at safety. Going back there would be suicidal.”
“They won’t try anything, especially if my mom wants my trust. Besides where else am I supposed to go? I still have school and my dad would be worried sick. As long as I have you by my side then I won’t have a problem.” I admitted
Sam reluctantly agreed and carefully pulled Claire from the car. He lifted her up bridal style and vanished down the road. A few minutes later he was back and did the same thing to me. Sadly the speed and wind did not make my leg feel the best. I wanted to scream, but that would make Sam feel guilty, which I would not allow. When we arrived at my house, it was as if nothing happened at all. Everyone was asleep, my room was spotless, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Once Claire was tucked in, Sam turned his attention to me. I was propped up against one of the walls as Sam looked over my injuries. His touch was as light as a feather so he wouldn’t hurt me any further. He tested the mobility in my legs and arms while I gritted my teeth.
Then it came to my chest injuries. He lightly poked my stomach and ribs and whenever I gasped he would apologize. I watched him work and noticed no bloodlust in eyes as he scanned my bloody body. He was determined and so very worried. From the faces he was making, I could tell my injuries were worse than I originally thought, “So what’s the diagnosis?”
Sam looked up from my leg with a frown, “Your leg is shattered, your wrist is badly sprained, a few of your ribs are cracked, and I think your shoulder popped out of place. You are a very strong woman to have this much disaster in your body and still keep a straight face. I’m surprised you’re even conscious.”
“Well, I’m stronger than I look.” I said repositioning myself with a gasp of pain.
Sam helped me return to the position I had been in. “Carly, I know you don’t want me to give you my blood, but I think it is our only option. Going to a hospital will bring more questions than answers and with the amount of damage, you can’t heal on your own. Just let me help you, please.”
I looked into his begging eyes for a long moment. I didn’t want to give my mother any satisfaction, but I also knew going to a hospital was not an option. Plus explaining my injuries to my family who remembers nothing, would just cause more issues. I took a deep breath and nodded.
Sam’s fangs extended as he bit into his wrist; hard. He dripped blood onto the cut in my leg and on my arm. He then put some on my stomach and hesitated when it came to my neck wound. I could see the guilt in his eyes when I made him look at me, “Sam, don’t blame yourself. I did this to save you. I don’t regret anything I did.”
“I hurt you in the worst way a vampire can hurt a human. I should’ve stayed strong and kept myself under control. If I were stronger, I wouldn’t have hurt you.” Sam said rubbing blood onto the bite; I would always have a scar.
Sam and I sat in silence for several minutes. I wanted to convince him this wasn’t his fault, but I knew it was no good. He would continue to blame himself when we both knew it wasn’t his doing. I was about to try and make him feel better when Sam interrupted me, “What are we gonna do with Claire? Do you want me to compel her?”
“No, I can’t hide this from her anymore.” I said looking down at her. “She is my best friend and if it weren’t for her we’d be dead. She deserves to know the truth.”
“What if she starts telling the town about what she saw? Many in this town will think she’s crazy, but there are a few who will believe her words. If Anthony and the others get even a whiff of it, then things could be a whole lot worse.” Sam explained
“I trust her, Sam. If she even begins to question or tell people, I’ll let you know. You can compel her and that will be that. But I want to give her the chance. I’ve been lying to everyone and having someone who I’ve known forever would help me stay away from insanity.” I said
Sam looked down at Claire and then over to me. He squeezed my shoulder and then turned toward the sliding glass door. I saw his movement and grabbed ahold of his hand, “Where are you going?”
“Claire, will be waking up soon. I think when she wakes up she’ll feel less scared seeing you. I’ll stay around to make sure no one gets in. If you need me, just call my name.” Sam said as he vanished from the room.
I felt the breeze hit my face and then Sam was gone. I walked over to the bed and sat down next to Claire. She looked so peaceful and safe from harm. It was all my fault she got brought into this mess. I was sure as hell not gonna let it happen again.
I moved some hair from Claire’s face, noticing all her wounds were gone. Her breathing was also steady which made my racing heart slow. I began to sit up when Claire’s hand shot out and grabbed my wrist. I looked down at her and Claire’s eyes were wide open. She pulled me back onto the bed as she pulled herself into a sitting position.
“It wasn’t a dream was it?” Claire asked
“No dream could ever be that unpleasant. It was more of a nightmare. But no. It wasn’t a dream. What do you remember?” I asked
“I remember getting taken from your room, you getting kidnapped, me getting bitten, I met Sam, I put holy water in the sprinkler system, I drove us out of there, and then I hit a man with a car.” Claire said as everything clicked into place, “Holy crap, I hit a man with a car! Is he okay? Did I kill him?!”
I grabbed hold of Claire’s hand and tried to calm her down, “You didn’t kill anyone. The man you hit was already dead. He jumped in front of the car on purpose so it isn’t your fault. He caused the car to crash.”
Relief filled her face and then drained just as fast, “Wait. If we crashed into that man, shouldn’t we be dead? The crash let alone should’ve killed us, but that man would’ve finished the job. How are we alive?”
“Long story short. The man was planning to kill us, but then my mother and brother stopped him. She gave me the blood to heal you and Sam.” I explained
“Wait, your mom’s alive?!” Claire asked with shock.
“She’s a vampire, has been since the crash. She let me and everyone else believe she was dead. I spent months in agony over that night when it all could’ve been avoided.” I said looking down at my feet, “What is even worse about all of this is that she turned Ethan. She didn’t just end her life, but his as well. Ethan is only 16 and now he will never get older. He’s cursed.”
“You know what I think?” Claire theorized as she placed a hand on mine, “I think your mom stayed away to avoid hurting you. When she saw the pain Ethan was in, she helped him escape. I might be new to this whole supernatural thing, but wouldn’t you want your family to live forever? She didn’t want to lose her son and he didn’t want to lose her again.”
“I guess.” I said
“How are we going to handle the aftermath of this?” Claire questioned as the worry returned to her face, “My parents are probably worried sick and your parents had to have heard something. What are we going to do?”
“No need to worry. My mo...Kelly said that she’d compel your family and mine to make sure no one remembered anything. She will get rid of the car and if you hadn’t noticed my room looks like nothing ever happened.” I said as Claire noticed I was right.
“Am I going to get compelled?” Asked Claire
“No, as long as you don’t tell anyone about what happened. If you start telling people of vampires, things will get ugly. Me, you, and Sam are the only ones who know aside from the bad guys. If you tell anyone else their life becomes at risk. You can not tell anyone, not your parents or our friends. Not one word.” I explained
“I won’t tell another soul, I promise.” Claire said squeezing my hand as we smiled at each other.
I woke up strewn out on my floor as Claire laid across the entire queen bed. In the middle of the night Claire had stolen the blanket and kicked me onto the floor. At that point I just dealt with the annoyance and slept on the carpet. I sat up and noticed Claire was still fast asleep, snoring to high heaven. I repositioned the blanket on top of Claire and headed into the bathroom
I quietly closed the door and got ready for the morning. I checked over my wounds and every wound was gone, aside from my scarred neck and sore limbs. I decided it was time for a shower since I still had blood caked on me from the day before. I got in the shower and let the hot water hit my sore back.
All I wanted to do was cry, but I had to stay strong for Claire and Sam, plus keep up an act around my family. They had to think everything was fine because I was not about to risk their lives again. I’ve already lost enough for a lifetime and I just couldn’t lose another. I just couldn’t.
After finishing in the bathroom, Claire woke up and did the same. Once we were both presentable, Amy yelled up the stairs to tell us breakfast was ready. I looked over at Claire and reminded her, “Do not say anything of what happened. They think we just had a normal sleep over and it has to stay that way.”
“No need to worry.” Claire said
“Alright, head on down. I’ll be down in a second.” I said as Claire got off the bed and quickly went down stairs. Once I knew the coast was clear I walked onto the balcony, Sam appeared by my side, “Claire, promised she wouldn’t tell.”
“Hopefully, she keeps the promise. If not, I’ll do the best I can to keep you both safe. I couldn’t live with myself if you had to lose even more person.” Said Sam
“Yeah, I don’t think I could handle it either. Thank you, Sam.” I said turning toward him. “Without you I would’ve fallen apart by now.”
“Carly, there’s something I need to tell you.” Sam announced
“What is it?” I asked becoming worried
“While I was watching your house last night, I saw someone. The person climbed through one of the house windows, but I didn’t want to worry you. I investigated and stayed in the shadows so the person wouldn’t see me. Luckily, he isn’t skilled enough to use his vampire abilities well.” Sam explained as my stomach dropped to the floor.
“Ethan came home, didn’t he?” I realized
“He compelled Amy to invite him in. It was weak, but strong enough to control her mind. He’s downstairs right now and I really think you should talk to him. Give Ethan a chance to explain.” Sam suggested
“Fine, but stay close. If anything happens…” I began
“I’ll be there.” Sam interrupted
I took a deep breath and headed for the door. When I turned to look back at the balcony, Sam was already gone. I slowly made my way downstairs to the dining room. Everyone greeted me kindly and the only open spot was next to Ethan.
I put on a fake smile and sat in the chair beside him. Claire looked nervous and Ethan looked hungry. I tried to keep everyone distracted and Amy helped out. None of them remembered the actual events of the last two days and I felt instant relief. That made things easier.
Amy dished out pancakes and everyone began to eat, except Ethan. We all chatted about the “sleepover” Claire and I had. Plus some other random topics I barely paid attention to. What concerned me was the way Ethan looked at me. During the entire meal he was staring and I knew what that stare meant.
When breakfast was over I got Claire out of there as fast as I could. We collected her belongings and I helped her to the door. Before leaving she turned toward me, “I thought Ethan was a vampire.”
“He is, Amy invited him in last night. That is why you need to leave. He is a new vampire and he’s not fully in control. Go home and don’t tell anyone of what happened. I will see you on Monday and we can talk then.” I said
“Carly, if he’s not fully in control then that means he could hurt you. I can’t just leave knowing you’re in a house with a newborn vampire. What if he hurts you, seriously hurts you?” Asked, Claire, with worry in her eyes.
“Sam is right outside. If Ethan tries anything, Sam will stop him. Don’t worry I’ll be fine. Now go home, please.” I said as Claire brought me in for a hug.
“Call me tonight so I know your okay.” Claire said putting her backpack over her shoulders.
I gave Claire one last look before the door was closed. I then glanced over at Ethan who still sat at the table. His eyes were locked on me and I knew he heard everything we just said. I nodded toward him and headed back up to my room.
Before I could close the door Ethan came in and closed it for me. I wasn’t surprised he followed me, so I turned around and faced him. He had his arms crossed and he did not look happy, “Do you not trust me?”
“Of course, I don’t.” I said crossing my arms as he was, “You are a newborn vampire and I’ve seen the movies. The new ones always have problems controlling themselves. Why did you come back here when you knew you weren’t ready?”
Ethan began to walk toward me as I backed away. “I came back because I live here too. Mom has been slowly turning me for months so I am not new to the cravings. Mom said I should stay here for the time being because if not I would worry everyone. So here I am.”
“Ethan, you shouldn’t have come back.” I said backing into the wall as Ethan came face to face with me. “This might make everyone think you’re fine, but you aren’t. I can tell you are hungry and being around them will only make it worse. Do you want to take the chance of attacking Dad or Amy?”
“I don’t plan to kill them, but if it came down to it I wouldn’t be opposed. That woman tainted Dad so if killing her solved that, then I would not mind in the slightest. Besides neither of them care about me anyway so removing one less shitty parent isn’t so bad.” Ethan said
“What about Saige?” I asked breaking some of Ethan’s cool. “She’s only 12 years old, Ethan. Do you really want to take the chance of killing her? Saige is your sister, do you really want to take that chance? Go back to mom and stay with her until you are sure you have a handle on your hunger. Please, Ethan.”
Ethan almost agreed with me, but then his face went cold. “I don’t take orders from you, Carly.”
“But you do from the woman who abandoned us?” I asked
“She did not abandon us.” Said, Ethan, grabbing ahold of my throat. I saw Sam in the corner of my eye, but I told him to wait. “She needed time to gain her strength. Mom loves us more than anything.”
“She made you into a vampire, Ethan. You will be stuck at 16 forever, don’t you get that? If she truly loved you she wouldn’t have took your life away. If she truly loved me, she wouldn’t have faked her death. Mom does not care for either of us, Ethan. She does not care.” I gasped
Ethan squeezed my throat harder, causing my face to turn red. Sam noticed my condition and used his speed to slam into Ethan. I fell onto the floor gasping for air as Sam and Ethan tumbled around on the floor. When Ethan tried to go for me again, Sam held him back.
“Ethan, you need to calm down. You are not in control of yourself and if you get too close you could kill someone. Look at Carly.” Said, Sam, forcing Ethan to look at me. “If I hadn’t arrived you would’ve killed her. You would’ve killed your own sister. You need to realize the problems your new life has.”
Ethan looked down at me with no love in his eyes. He broke out of Sam’s grasp, wiped the invisible dirt from his clothes, and stormed out of the room. Once Ethan was out of sight, Sam helped me up and checked my throat for damage.
“Are you sure you want to stay here? It’s bad enough the others can get in, but now your brother is staying here. What if he tries to hurt you and I’m not here to protect you?” Asked Sam
“Sam, I can’t hide from this. Even if I stayed with you they’d find me. I can’t waste my life because I could be in danger. I am going to live each day to the fullest and if I am in trouble then I am. But I can’t just sit around until that moment comes.” I said
