After my fight with Ethan, everyone in the house had been quiet. Ethan stayed in his room for the rest of the day, Amy just kept cleaning, and Saige never left the living room TV. With my Dad at work it was like the house was consumed with silence. Sam had left soon after, either going home or hiding just out of my sight.
I tried getting my homework done so when I returned the teachers wouldn’t be yelling. While I focused on the writing everything seemed so normal, even if it was just for a few minutes. After that I ate, cleaned up, finished up my assignments, and then went to bed. I was surprised that Ethan didn’t try to kill me again or that none of my mother’s goons appeared. After Sam burned them with holy water I was sure Aria or Nick would pop up, but there was no bump in the night.
The next morning the same silence ensued. Everyone was acting so weird and I did not like the feeling. They barely spoke and all of them seemed in a trance. I knew it was my Mom’s doing and unless I could find her there was nothing I could do. Ethan never appeared at breakfast and when I left for school he was nowhere to be found.
I felt bad for the kid, but it was his doing. If he hadn’t given in to the she devil this wouldn’t be happening. I know he was in pain, but he shouldn’t have let her win; even if she was our mom. After shaking the thoughts away I got into my car and drove to school.
The drive to school was only five minutes, but the way the roads swerved it felt so much longer. The swaying willows billowed in the wind as cars strode past. Wisconsin has two seasons: winter and construction. When there isn’t snow on the ground then construction crews are ripping it up. The weather switches from warm to cold within hours. Sometimes in summer it feels like winter and vice versa.
Winter was coming to an end so the construction would soon fill the city with loud noises. Wisconsin is a beautiful place, but when you have lived here your whole life it wears down on you. I finally arrived at the school, parking my car, and heading toward the building.
A few feet from the door Sam appeared out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at him and he looked back at me. We came up to the door and Sam held the door open. I thanked him as we headed to our lockers. I grabbed my notebooks and papers for class and then slammed the locker door shut. Sam waited for me and then we headed to class together.
Sam and I arrived at the door and he allowed me to go in first. Christina’s face lit up like a Christmas tree when she saw how close we were standing beside each other. She could barely keep her excitement contained when we sat down in our seats. I looked back at Sam and smiled as he did the same. When I turned back toward Christina she got real close and whispered, “Are you official yet?”
I leaned forward with a look of confusion. “Official? What do you mean?”
“You know exactly what I mean. Official, as in you and Sam. Have you two made it official?” Christina asked with real interest in her eyes.
“I’m still confused.” I said as Christina sighed in annoyance
“Are you and Sam boyfriend and girlfriend yet? An official relationship? I see the way you two look at each other. I also know there is something between you that is more than just a friend thing. I can sense it. You can deny it all you want, but it’s there.” Christina implied
“We aren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. I’ll be talking to him after school so if something happens, I’ll let you know.” I said
“You better.” Christina warned as the bell rang for class to begin.
Mrs. Lindell walked in with a look of disappointment as usual and began her lesson. I tried to follow along, but with everything that has happened the last few days I couldn’t think straight. My mom was back as a vampire, she turned my brother, I almost died again, and now Claire knows everything.
Sometimes I wish I was just some normal teenage girl. The only worries I would have would be tests, my social life, and boys. But instead I have to deal with vampires, visions, and the fact that my life could be taken from me. This is my life and there is nothing I can do to change it.
I sat stuck in my thoughts until the bell rang. I nodded to Christina and Sam then I headed to second period. From then on the periods went by in a blur. I went to class, took notes, started my assignment, and then left for the next period. I didn’t really notice how much time had passed until the bell rang for lunch.
It was like being woken up from a dream. I walked into the cafeteria and got in line for whatever was being served today. I got to the front as a lunch woman put a sloppy joe, mashed potatoes, french fries, and a roll on my tray. I nodded in thanks and quickly got out of line.
Ketchup was a necessity and luckily, the dispenser was full to the brim. I slathered my fries with the tomato goodness as a tray plopped down next to mine. I looked up at the owner of the tray and my smile widened, “Trying to pretend to eat human food?”
“I have to keep an act up, people would get suspicious if I didn’t get food.” Sam said getting butter on his potatoes.
“If you actually ate the food, what would happen? Would you immediately puke it back up? Would you feel nothing or would your insides explode? What would actually happen?” I asked as Sam gave me a smile.
“If I consumed the food it would taste like nothing and I would have to puke it back up. Not immediate, but I would get a stomach ache later on. If you want to pretend to be normal you sometimes have to do awful things.” Sam explained
“Well, Mr. Human Being, where are you going to sit?” I asked as Sam scanned the cafeteria.
“Probably over there.” Sam said pointing to an empty table near the exit. Nobody ever sat there, except the nerds and loners. If you sat there, you were instantly labeled and getting rid of the label was not an easy feat. I wasn’t about to let Sam get labeled as the loner, even if he didn’t mind labels.
I shook my head and made him look at me, “You are not sitting at the loner table. You are going to be sitting with me and my friends. We always have an open spot anyway.”
“Are you sure you want me to sit there? Last time you brought me along we were swarmed with questions.”Sam said in an unsure tone of voice.
“I don’t care about that. You have saved my life more times than I can count, you aren’t gonna sit by yourself. Come on, our table is right over here.” I said grabbing hold of his hand and pulling him toward our table.
The minute my hand touched his I felt a spark of electricity. I tried to not to make a reaction, but I could tell he felt it too. His smile widened even more as I shook my head. I ignored him and pulled Sam to the table. I set my tray down and sat down at the exact same moment as he did.
The second his butt hit the seat my friends eyes went wide. I could tell they were all brimming with questions, except Phoua who was being polite and Claire who was abnormally quiet. Before they could speak up I explained, “Guys, Sam is going to be sitting with us today. I didn’t want him to sit all by himself and I knew you guys wouldn’t mind.”
“Oh, we definitely don’t mind. You are welcome anytime, Sam. We always have an open seat.” Christina said as she looked toward me and winked. I rolled my eyes and laughed to myself.
Silence ensued for only a moment and then Phoua became a protective mother, “Sam, you have been spending quite a lot of time with Carly recently. I see the way you look at each other and I am glad you two are happy. But I don’t want to see Carly get hurt. Is there an ulterior motive? If you get what I’m saying?”
“Phoua, don’t.” I said
“Carly, it’s fine. She’s just worried about you.” Sam said as he gave Phoua a smile, “I have no ulterior motive, Phoua. I like hanging around Carly and she means a lot to me. I would never hurt her. You have my word on that.”Claire even chimed in, “I second that. Sam, is a great guy. He has done nothing to hurt Carly and I trust him. He wouldn’t lay a hand on her, no need to worry.”
The others all turned their heads toward Claire and stared at her. All surprised at her sudden liking to Sam. A few days ago she was jealous of him liking me and now she was all for it. Anna was the first to question her, “I thought you didn’t like Sam. You said you had a bad feeling about him and all that crap. What suddenly changed?”
Claire looked over at Sam and then back at Anna. “I changed my mind because I met him. He’s a good person and I truly believe that. As long as he treats Carly right, I see no problem.”
I mouthed thank you in Claire’s direction and she responded with a nod. The others were surprised at Claire’s sudden change, but they didn’t really notice. After a few moments of awkward silence, Phoua decided to break the quiet. “Sorry about what I said. I am just very protective of my friends. I don’t like seeing them hurt and I was just worried. Sorry.”
“Let’s talk about something else. We don’t want to scare Sam away with all this fighting.” Christina said turning her attention to Sam, “What do you do, Sam? Outside of school I mean.”
“Nothing much. Just exercising, watching TV, reading books, and cooking my own meals. Nothing exciting.” Said Sam
“There is nothing wrong with not being exciting. Sometimes you just need time to unwind.” Claire said looking over at Sam and I.
“I second that.” Christina said literally lifting her hand into the air. The whole table began to laugh and the group was brought out of the awkwardness.
For the rest of the lunch period we just talked about random stuff. I noticed Claire barely talked at all and it was far from her normal talkativeness. I tried to get her to join in, but she just wasn’t feeling it. I would have to ask her about it later, but before I could take a breath Anna butted in.
Anna cleared her throat and caught everyone’s attention, “Let’s change the subject to something a little more interesting. Sam and Carly, are you guys official yet?”
Everyone turned their heads toward us and looked with anticipation. My face turned into a tomato and Sam loved every minute of it. Luckily, before either of us could answer the bell rang and relief spread through me.
“We’ll get the answer out of you, mark my words.” Anna said with a huge smile. She looked over at Sam and I while walking toward the doors. Phoua waved and tried to catch up with Anna, Claire gave me a hug then ran off, and Christina got closer.
“Go get em, Tiger.” Christina encouraged as she squeezed my shoulder and quickly vanished.
Sam looked down at me and I just shrugged. We set our trays on the counter and headed toward the doors side by side. He followed me to my locker and Sam finally asked the question he had since we left the cafeteria, “This is the second time one of your friends have asked if we were official. I have been a teen for a long time, but I don’t think I’ve heard that one. What do they mean by ‘Official’?”
I grabbed my notebooks from my locker and ran a hand through my hair. After a deep breath I explained, “Meet me at my house after school. I’ll explain to you what it means then.”
I closed my locker door and said goodbye. I strode down the hallway and went to class; feeling his eyes on my back the whole way. It was just like the first day of class all over again. I could think of nothing, but Sam. Once I explained what official meant things were either going to go well or I’d scare him off.
I was pretty much in a daze the rest of the day. I sat in class, doing what I was told, but not really remembering what happened. The last two classes dragged on as I watched the clock tick by. I was tortured to just sit because all I wanted to do was get home and talk to Sam.
When the final bell rang I slowly walked out of class, grabbed my belongings, and heading to my car. My heart was loud in my ears when I arrived in the driveway. I was so nervous and excited I could barely contain it. This was like nothing I had ever felt before.
When I arrived, Amy was doing laundry and she waved towards me. I waved back and headed upstairs. Saige was doing her homework and when I walked up to Ethan’s room, everything was silent. I slowly opened the door and found no one inside. I hadn’t seen him since he attacked me and I just hoped he wasn’t doing something stupid.
I straightened my shirt and headed into my room. I threw my backpack onto the floor and turned to lock the door. As the lock clicked into place I felt a breeze through my hair. I smiled and turned around to find Sam sitting on my bed.
“That was fast.” I said walking over and awkwardly sitting next to him.
“Well, this seemed important and I had nowhere else to be. What does official mean?” Asked Sam
I played with my hands and looked up at him, “Official means official relationship. They were wondering if we were boyfriend and girlfriend yet. I was hoping to talk to you before my friends got all invested, but I guess I wasn’t fast enough.”
“Oh, that’s what it means.” Sam said as his head lowered.
I could see this bothered him and I didn’t want things to get complicated. I quickly stood up and blurted out, “It’s just my friends being noisy. If you don’t want to be in a relationship then that’s fine. I’ll just tell my friends to leave it alone.”
Sam stood up from the bed and ran a hand through his hair. We liked each other and that kiss the other day proved it, but being that close was dangerous and Sam knew it, “I’m just not sure. This could put your life in more danger than it already is. If they know how close we truly are, they might come for you. Maybe, we should just be friends.”
Sam began to head toward balcony, most likely leaving. I couldn’t let him walk away without saying what I had wanted to say all day. Something in me snapped and I just couldn’t keep it in. I knew Sam thought this was for the best, but I just didn’t agree, “I don’t want to be friends!”
“You don’t want to be friends?” Sam asked with a look of confusion. He thought we were good friends and he didn’t understand my sudden change. He remembered the kiss we shared, but he also knows the consequences of moving forward.
I bit my lip, squeezed my eyes tight, and took a deep breath. When I opened my eyes I took a step forward, “Sam, I like you. I like you more than friends should. I have since the day I met you.”
“Carly…” Sam began as I silenced him.
“When we kissed, it was like nothing I had ever felt. Whenever you touch me that same electricity goes throughout my body. I don’t care if it’s dangerous because I don’t think I could survive without you. Sam, you are the one thing in my life that makes sense.” I said as my eyes filled with tears.
“Carly, do you know the consequences?” Sam asked getting only a few steps from me, “If we do this that puts you in more danger. Us being close to one another is bad enough, but if they learn how close it could bite us in the butt. I don’t want to risk your life.”
“I don’t care about the consequences. I know they might come to get us, but as long as I am with you that doesn’t matter. Sam, I need you.” I said as a tear rolled down my cheek.
Sam suddenly grabbed my shoulders and slammed my back into the wall, “It’s not just them that could hurt you. If we get too close and I lose control I would never forgive myself. I hurt you once and I will never do it again. Doing this is like a lamb dating a lion. It’s dangerous for both of us.”
I knew he was doing this to scare me, but I wasn’t scared of him. He might be a vampire, but he wasn’t like the others. He would never scare me away, not in a heartbeat, “Don’t you get it? I love you, Sam. No matter the danger I will always love you.”
Sam’s stance faltered and he backed away from me. His eyes were wet with tears just as mine were. He wanted to believe we could be together, but he also knew that if he lost control he could seriously hurt me. If I had to die, I would rather die in his arms then without him. I grabbed his hand and he looked down at it with blurry vision.
“You have done so much for me and I love you. I love how your eyes sparkle in the moonlight. I love your perfect smile and funny laugh. I love everything about you and even though there is danger around every corner, I don’t care. I love you, Sam.” I confessed
Sam stared at me for several moments. He turned around and began walking toward the door again. He stopped a few feet from the door and swore at himself. Sam bit his lip and walked back over to me. He shook his head and looked at me with loving eyes.
“I love you too, Carly. I love you with everything I have.” Sam confessed stepping in front of me and grabbing hold of my face.
His lips were on mine and that same electricity appeared once again. Sam’s lips glided over mine with a featherly touch. His hands slid down to my waist and mind found its way around his neck. For only a moment, it was just him and I. My room vanished around us and it was just shadows. I wanted to stay in this moment forever, but sadly it had to end.
He pulled away with our arms still around each other. I looked up into his bright blue eyes and he looked down into my green ones. I decided it was time to ask the most important question, “Does that mean you want to be my boyfriend?”
“More than anything in this world.” Sam said giving me another peck on the lips.
“Sam, I was thinking.” I said with a smile, “The last few weeks have been hazardous to our health. I want to do something normal and I think we deserve as much. Would you like to go on a date with me? Somewhere quiet where we can just talk and enjoy each other’s company. Would you like to?”
“I think that would be a lovely idea.” Sam said
As of right now everything is okay. Claire is alive, Sam is my boyfriend, and I haven’t had a vision in four days. Aside from my mother and brother being vampires, my mom’s minions waiting to end my human life, and that I have to lie to my friends and family, everything is just fine. There is bad stuff going on in my life right now and there is nothing I can really do to change it.
Because of who I am I will always be in danger. All I can do is live in the moment and hope to make it to tomorrow. Besides I have Sam by my side and I trust him with my life. As long as he is by my side, I feel safe. I finally have someone that I truly trust and that cares about me as much as I care about them. Even with everything else going, I think this is the first time, in a long time, I am truly happy.
