Chapter Five

The day of the party had finally arrived. All week the whole school was buzzing about it and there was non stop costume planning. I didn’t see Aria or my mother either; things almost seemed normal. I couldn’t think of any good costume ideas that wasn’t stupid. I wanted to be creative, but suddenly my creative genes died out.

My first idea was a vampire, but I already knew too many of those. A zombie could work, but I didn’t have the talent to make it look good. Being a witch was also on the table, but I didn’t want to paint my skin green. So my final idea was a Victorian woman; dress and all. I have always been interested in the era and I knew Sam would love it as well.

Lucky for me I lived near a vintage store which had the perfect dress. The straps hung from my shoulders as the dress flowed downward. The hoop skirt was about medium size and a belt of lace hung around my waist. It was a beautiful shade of blue with accents of white and purple. Bows scattered the bottom of the skirt with lace work on the sleeves. It was perfect and something I could actually afford.

I was halfway into the dress when I heard a knock at my sliding glass door. I peaked my head out to find Sam dressed in a tailcoat. I motioned for him to come in as I slid the dress on, “What’s your costume, Sam?”

“I am dressed as a vampire, of course. I even have fake fangs.” Sam said plopping in the plastic fangs you could get for 50 cents at any store, “It was the best choice for a costume, don’t you think?”

“You could’ve just showed off your real fangs instead of wasting money on that piece of plastic.” I said peaking my head out the door.

“I don’t want anyone to get suspicious. Besides, I think the fangs suit me.” Sam said with a fangy smile.

I scuffed at him and slipped back into the bathroom. I began to zip the dress when I realized I couldn’t zip it all the way to the top. Having short arms had it’s disadvantages. I peaked my head back out, catching Sam’s attention, “Can you zip up my dress and pin the bow in place?”

“Of course.” Sam said getting off the bed.

I held the dress in place, walking out into my room and turning around so my back was to him. Sam grabbed ahold of the zipper and slowly pulled upward. His hand grazed my back, causing me to shiver. He smiled to himself as he zipped the dress up and pinned the bow in place.

“What do you think?” I asked turning toward him. He looked the dress over as I spun around in a circle. As I came to a stop I curtseyed with a smile.

Sam bowed and smiled widely, “I think you look lovely, Ms. Carlisle. As beautiful as a star shining in the nighttime sky. One of a kind, indeed.”

“Why thank you, Samuel. I appreciate the kindness given. You are quite the gentlemen.” I said as we both laughed aloud.

Sam took hold of my hands and looked down into my eyes. One of hands slid up to my face and he bent down to give me a kiss. My hands wrapped around his back and his hands cupped my face. I could feel the electricity between us and I loved every second of it. Sadly, my sister had to walk in and ruin it

“You guys are so cute together.” Saige said as Sam and I jumped. I quickly scooted away from Sam as he wiped his lips. She held her hands up with a smile, “You don’t have to stop on my account.”

“You really need to learn to knock.” I said

“And you really need to learn to lock the door.” Saige replied

“Are you gonna tell, Dad?” I asked

“No, I’ll keep your secret. This is the happiest I have seen you in a long time and I am not going to ruin that for you.” Saige said sticking her hand out toward Sam, “Nice to officially meet you, I’m Saige.”

“Hello, Saige. My name’s Sam.” Sam said shaking Saige’s hand.

Saige smiled up at him, but there was something sinister about it. She always had another motive and sadly we had to find out what it was, “You better treat my sister right or else I’ll hurt you. I might be only 13, but I know a lot of pressure points in the human body. Don’t make me use them.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Sam said

“Good.” Saige said heading for the door. She turned around and gave us a quick smile, “Have fun you two.”

“We will.” I said as Saige closed the door on her way out. I sat down on the bed and huffed aloud. I looked over at Sam and shrugged, “Sorry, she is quite nosey.”

“Don’t worry, I don’t mind. She’s a brave little girl and confident at that. I think it’s cute the way she protects you.” Sam said

“Ever since Mom ‘died’ she has been like that. It hit me the hardest and she could see that. I am the older sister, but she acts like one better than I do. Sometimes it feels like we should be switched.” I said

Sam sat down beside me and clutched my hand, “Having family care about you is a good thing. I was the older brother and I did anything to protect Aria. Sometimes she would act older and it just made me love her more. She knew how to handle herself and be someone to be proud of. But that was a long time ago.”

“I think that same Aria is still alive. Aria might act tough, but I can see right through it. She still cares, which scares her to death. She wants to be a monster and push everyone away, but part of her still feels something.” I said

“You think so?” Sam asked

“I know so.”

I held back a smile as I got off the bed and collected my belongings. Sam sat on the bed and watched as I scurried around. Once I knew I had everything I turned back toward Sam, “Are you ready to go?”

“Yes, I am. Meet you around front.” Sam said vanishing out of thin air.

I made my way through the house and out the door as fast as I could walk. Amy tried to snap a picture, but I made sure she couldn’t. She didn’t need pictures of everything I did and I wanted to enjoy tonight. This was the first time in a long time where I could be a normal teen and I needed this. I truly needed this.

Sam was waiting at the edge of the driveway. I got in and we started toward the party. I maneuvered Sam in the correct direction and it was smooth sailing from there. We arrived in good time and walked up to the door together. Before I could knock Phoua had opened the door.

She smiled at me as we scanned each other’s outfits. Phoua was dressed as Pocahontas and her boyfriend as John Smith. They were cute together and she clearly thought the same of Sam and I. At least by her sudden excitement and wide eyes made it seem that way, “You guys look so adorable!”

“You guys are cute as well.” I said as Phoua looked up at her boyfriend and he looked down at her. Her boyfriend turned his attention back to us and smiled.

“My name is Henry.” Henry said as he shook our hands, “It’s nice to finally meet Phoua’s friends. Since I go to a different school it’s hard to meet people she cares about. You all seem lovely.”

“Nice to meet you too, Henry. Phoua has talked a lot about you. You seem just as kind as she describes. My name is Carly.” I said as I turned toward Sam, “And this is my boyfriend, Sam.”

“Well, I welcome you both into my house and I hope you guys have a wonderful time. We have drinks, food, and lots of music. I hope you have a spooktacular time. Mwahhaa.” Henry cackled with a big smile.

Sam and I laughed and then headed inside. Phoua waved towards me and then followed her boyfriend into another room. Sam and I walked into the main room and it was jam packed. There were people everywhere and the music was deafening. I personally wanted to sit for awhile, but Sam had other ideas.

“Would you like to dance with me?” Sam asked

“I don’t know how to dance.” I said awkwardly staring at my feet.

Sam grabbed hold of my chin and pulled my head up so I looked him in the eye, “Then I’ll teach you. Trust me. You’ll love it.”

He wrapped his hand around my wrist and pulled me onto the dance floor. As our feet landed in the middle of the floor a slow song began to play. Couples around us got in formation, which I didn’t know about. I saw slow dancing in movies, but I had never actually tried it. Sam grabbed my arms and wrapped them around his neck then he slid his hands down to my waist. He said to just do the opposite of him and tried to. Sam would move his foot forward and I was supposed to move my foot back, but I kept accidently stepping on his toes.

I kept apologizing and his smile just got bigger, “Carly, I have a better idea.”

“What stopping and taking a break? Even though you heal, me stepping on your feet has got to hurt. Maybe you can recover and after more practice we can try this again.” I suggested

“I am not giving up that easily. I don’t want to stop, I have a different idea.” Sam said clutching my waist and lifting me up so my feet were directly on top of his. We were so close I could feel his breath on my face, “That’s better.

“Wouldn’t this hurt your feet even more?” I asked

“It doesn’t hurt at all. Besides, this way you can get the dance down pact without apologizing every 5 seconds. I saw this in a movie once and she reminded me a lot of you.” Sam said

The next song played and this is how we danced. A lot of people either looked at us like we were weirdos or that we were being really cute. I ignored the stares and laid my head on Sam’s shoulder. It was nice to just be with him and not worry about what happens next. It was peaceful.

“I wish we could do this more often.” I said snuggling into the nook of his shoulder, “Just relax and let the world go by.”

“I’m sorry that it can’t be that way. I wish it was and I am so sorry I can’t give that to you.” Sam said

“It’s not your fault, Sam. This is just how my life turned out to be and nothing could have changed that. You are the one good thing I have and I can’t lose you.” I said

“I feel exactly the same way.” Sam said

We continued to dance for some time until both of us were out of breath. Sam and I separated and decided it was time for a break. I asked if he could get me a drink and he strode off down the hall. I found my way to a table to find Christina sitting beside me. I didn’t even notice her until she spoke up, “You and Sam are really cute together.”

“Jesus Christ! You scared the crap out of me!” I yelled jumping in my seat, “When did you get there?”

Christina laughed to herself and then looked over at me, “I saw you sitting by yourself and decided to snoop. Besides, Sam is getting you a drink and it looks like you need the company. Now spill the tea. What is he like now that you are official?”

I looked down at my feet and then back up at her, “He’s even sweeter. Sam is perfect. He treats me like I’m his world and everytime we touch it feels like an electric shock.”

“You really love him, don’t you?” Christina asked

“Yeah, I do. He is the one thing in my life that I cherish the most. He fills the empty space I have had in my heart since I can remember. Without him I wouldn’t be the same. I couldn’t imagine my life without him.” I said

“If you’re happy then that is all that matters.” Christina said with a smile.

I suddenly felt eyes on my back and I knew someone was watching me. I looked around and spotted Anthony in the corner of the room; his eyes drilling holes into my soul. If I stayed in a populated area, he couldn’t hurt me. But then again, he might just plow through anyone who gets in his way. I don’t know if he was here to hurt me, but I also didn’t really want to find out.

“Carly, are you okay?” Christina asked noticing that I was staring across the room.

“Yeah.” I said not taking my eyes off Anthony for a second, “I’m fine.”

If he was my mother’s lap dog as Aria stated then he wouldn’t kill me. He might break me, but he wouldn’t kill me. It wasn’t comforting in the slightest because if my mother changed her mind, I’d be dead. I just wanted tonight to be normal, but you don’t always get what you wish for.

“Would you excuse me?” I asked

I got up from the table and walked into the crowd. Christina looked around to try and follow me, but she couldn’t spot me. I made my way back to the middle of the dance floor and caught sight of Anthony again. It was as if he were a statue in a sea of people. Something about it gave me the chills.

Sam returned with my drink and followed my gaze. When he looked over at where I was looking, no one was there. He waved a hand in front of my face to try and get my attention. I blinked and excused myself to the bathroom. Sam asked if I was okay and I lied.

He looked doubtful, but Sam tried to believe me. I curtseyed and headed toward the nearest bathroom. When I was about an inch from turning the doorknob, someone pulled me through the door to the backyard. I was yanked into the darkness and slammed against the side of the house. A hand went over my mouth and the owner of the hand was the one and only Anthony.

He lifted his other hand and put his finger in front of his lips, shushing me. I quickly nodded and he lifted the hand he had over my mouth. Taking this opportunity, I asked the question I had on my mind, “Did my mother send you?”

He laughed to himself, “She knew you would be attending this party, but your mother does not know I am here. She wants to gain your trust and be your friend. She wants to protect you. I will follow her lead, but I don’t agree with her ideals.”

“What’s your plan then?” I asked looking at him with a brave face, “Are you going to kill me? Kill me before my mother gets too attached?”

“Killing you would be going against what your mother wants. I care for her deeply, even If I don’t agree with how she does things. I didn’t come here to kill you, but hurting you is still an option.” Anthony said squeezing my arms.

“Hurting me isn’t going to solve anything. You want my mother’s love then hurting me will go against her. She wants me alive and if you do anything else, she won’t be happy.” I said

“I do love her dearly, but she isn’t thinking clearly. Pissing her off is worth the pain I can cause you.” Anthony said twisting a curl of my hair, “You know you look beautiful in this dress. You look just like a girl from the era. Perfect to a point.”

“Born in the wrong era, I guess.”

“Maybe, you were. It’s sad I’ll have to ruin it. Maybe, I’ll cut you until your dress is stained red or I rip into that pretty neck of yours; have a taste for myself.” Anthony threatened with a sadistic smile.

“Sam is right inside and he will...” I began

“He will what? He has never been strong enough to kill me and I think we both know that. Sam is weak because he doesn’t drink straight from the vein like he should. If he did, then I might be worried. He’s a weakling among weaklings and I am not afraid of him.” Anthony said

“He’s stronger than you think.” I said

“Then where is he? If he loves you so much, where is he? Sam should be here protecting you, but instead he’s in that party. He is weak and he can’t even use his abilities correctly. Sam is not strong.” Anthony said

“Maybe, he isn’t. But there is something he has that you don’t.” I said

“And what’s that?” Anthony questioned

“The ability to sneak up on his enemy.” I said

Anthony barely turned his head before Sam was on him. He grabbed Anthony’s arms and threw him across the yard. Anthony skid down the grass, slamming into a tree. Sam quickly turned toward me, checking for injuries, “Are you okay?”

“You don’t need to worry about me, I’m fine. Go get’em, Tiger.” I said as Sam turned away from me and ran at Anthony. Anthony got up only to get tackled by Sam. They rolled around on the ground for several moments before Anthony got the upper hand.

Anthony quickly got to his feet and drop kicked Sam in the stomach. He then continued to kick him until Sam grasped hold of Anthony’s other foot. Sam yanked and Anthony collapsed onto the grass. They went at it for what felt like forever until Anthony was getting fed up. Anthony knocked Sam onto ground again and appeared before me. Sam noticed this closeness and tried to push him away. Anthony’s hand shoutout and clasped onto Sam’s throat.

Anthony began to squeeze as he offered his hand to me, “Your mother has been asking for you. Come with me now and I’ll let Sam go. No catches or secret plans. Do we have a deal?”

“Carly, no.” Sam gasped as he tried to rip Anthony’s hand away.

I looked over at Sam and then down at Anthony’s hand. I knew either way this was going to end badly, but I didn’t have a choice. I placed my hand in Anthony’s as my body erupted with pain. Both of them noticed my sudden expression as I clutched onto Anthony’s hand. I looked up at Anthony as everything faded to black. I could hear Sam yelling my name as Anthony stood still in my grasp. When the pain eased I was shown a new picture; something I didn’t care to see.
