Chapter Six

Darkness is all I could see. I was surrounded by it, smothered even. It was like being trapped in ink. I would try to move, but my limbs felt weighted. I couldn’t see anything, not even my hand in front of my face.

The darkness quickly faded as I was thrown out of the darkness into a grassy field. I looked around and only one house sat on the property. I slowed walked toward, bitter wind biting at my cheeks.

I walked up onto the old rotted porch, noticing the lights were on. I looked in one of the windows and saw a family having a dinner. Their at the table was Anthony, a woman, and two kids; a girl and boy. They looked so happy enjoying the meal prepared, but then I felt a breeze hit my back.

I turned around to find a man approaching the house with glowing eyes. I knew what I was about to see and I didn’t want to let it happen. I stood in front of the door to block the vampire from entering. But as usual he went right through me, kicking the door off its hinges. He walked through the doorway as I heard Anthony’s wife scream.

I followed after the man to find Anthony’s wife and kids bundled in the corner. Anthony was standing in front of them with a kitchen knife. The vampire looked at all of them like a predator does to prey. He looked more animalistic than human. He was a monster.

“You can not kill me with that little knife. I am no mortal. You can’t win against a monster without becoming one yourself. Are you willing to do that?” Said, the man, in a low growly tone.

Anthony twisted the knife in his hand but kept it pointed at the beast. “I know what you are, Hellbeast. I’ve heard rumors of what you have been doing to neighboring villages. I am no fool to your treacherous ways, my friend. But I will not let you take anyone I care about to hell with you.”

“How do you plan to stop me? You do not have the strength nor the will to win. There is no situation where you come out on top. It’s not possible, my friend. You can’t win.” Said the vampire

“I can with my belief.” Said, Anthony, pulling out his necklace. Attached to the chain was a small golden cross. Anthony outstretched the cross as the vampire hissed. Anthony got closer to the beast as It cringed back. Anthony got within inches and stabbed the vampire with his knife.

The vampire began to laugh as it’s hand shot out and grabbed ahold of Anthony’s throat. Anthony struggled against the man’s grasp as the vampire pulled the knife out of his chest. He looked down at it and then back up at Anthony as he plunged the knife deep into Anthony’s stomach. His family screamed as the vampire whispered in Anthony’s ear.

“Crosses don’t work and neither do knifes. If you wanted to kill me you should’ve gone for the heart with a wooden stake.” Said, the vampire, looked over at Anthony’s family and back to him. “I am going to make you watch as I slaughter your family. You will watch the life leave their eyes. When I am finished I’ll end your existence slowly. So you can wallow in pain.”

“Please, spare them.” Choked, Anthony, as pleading with all the strength he had left.

“You should’ve thought of that before you attacked me. I don’t take kindly when my meal fights me. Sit back and enjoy the show.” Said, the vampire, setting Anthony up against the stairs.

When he was distracted Anthony’s wife ushered the kids outside. The vampire caught her intentions instantly and appeared in front of her. The kids managed to squeeze through the door, but his wife wasn’t as lucky. The vampire slammed the door shut and grabbed a hold of the woman. She tried pushing him away but it was no use.

I tried to pull him off, but my hands went right through. I did everything in my power to try and save her, but I couldn’t. I was powerless and made to watch the gruesome sight. There was nothing I could do.

The vampire dragged her over to Anthony and laid her right in front of him. Anthony tried to save her, but he barely had the strength to keep his eyes open. The vampire looked Anthony directly in the eye as he sunk his fangs into her neck. She looked over at Anthony and held out her hand. He began to cry as he clutched her hand.

She held back her screams so he wouldn’t feel as guilty. She squeezed his hand and never looked away. When she was near death the vampire vanished so he could go find the kids. Anthony pulled her over to him so she could sit beside him. That way she didn’t have to spend her last moments alone.

Anthony had the strength to hold on a little longer, but his wife was fading fast. He squeezed her hand and brought it to his lips for a kiss. “I love you so much, Charlotte. I am so sorry I couldn’t save you.”

“You did as much as you could, Anthony. I love you so much.” Said, Charlotte, putting her hand on his cheek.

“I don’t want to lose you.” Said, Anthony, as tears streamed down his cheeks.

“You won’t lose me. We’ll be together again soon. We’ll be happy. I know it so.” Said, Charlotte, as she smiled.

Charlotte’s smile quickly faded as her life did. Her hand dropped from Anthony’s face into her lap and her head fell to his shoulder. Anthony squeezed his eyes shut as he heard his daughter scream in agony and his son soon after. Anthony could feel his life leaving him slowly as he lost feeling in his legs. He just wanted it to end.

A few seconds later, the vampire returned with Anthony’s daughter and son. He threw their lifeless bodies on the floor near the door and crouched down beside Anthony. “How does it feel to watch everything you hold dear ripped from you?”

“Please, end my anguish. I just want the pain to stop, please. I beg of you. End this torment.” Gasped, Anthony, as he began to sob.

“I was going to do that, but then I thought of something so much better. Letting you die in this house is too easy. I want you to suffer and living forever with the image of your family murdered is just that.” Said the vampire

“Why are you doing this?” Asked Anthony

“Because I think it’s fun. I love ruining lives and you are just the next house I found. It could’ve been anyone, but you were closest. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt for long. Just relax and sit still.” Said, the vampire, nearing Anthony’s neck.

That’s when everything went to black. My face was stained with tears and I could barely keep myself standing. That was awful, so awful. I couldn’t even imagine having to watch my family die. I just wanted to cry.

I wanted to come back to reality, but I wasn’t done just yet. I passed memories like him getting married, his kids being born, and other happy moments. I was thrown into a memory from right after Sam tried to kill him. I landed right beside Anthony’s still corpse.

Anthony looked so peaceful and calm, like a statue in a graveyard. I got closer to him and he sat straight up. The sudden movement scared me into falling on my butt. Anthony stood up and pulled the stake from his chest. He screamed and threw a chair into the opposite wall; shattering it.

He paced for a moment and then looked in my direction. “What are you doing here, seer? I am not in the mood for your petty talk. You should leave before I get angry.”

My eyes went wide with surprise. When I went in Nick’s head I was invisible and for most people I am. This is a memory, he shouldn’t be able to see or speak to me. “Um, my name is Carly. I am touching your future self and I got sucked into your memories. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“Carly is such an odd name. I have never heard of a Carly before. What time do you come from, seer?” Asked, Anthony, with curiosity.

“I come from 2019. My name didn’t become popular until the 1970’s.” I said

“How did you get here?” Asked Anthony

“I touched you and ended up here.” I said

“You haven’t learned to control your powers yet, have you? You shouldn’t be getting sucked in by a touch. With practice you can learn to control it.” Said, Anthony, wiping away the invisible dust from his jacket.

“How are we talking? I’m inside your head. This is a memory, you shouldn’t even be able to see me.” I said as Anthony laughed to himself.

“The stronger you get the more you can do. With more practice you can do things people thought impossible. You are a very special type of person, Carly.” Said Anthony

“What will I be able to do?” I asked

“When it comes to seeing people’s memories, you will be able to talk to the people in the memories, like you were actually there. Anything you do will get reversed the minute you leave, except anything that happens to you.” Said, Anthony, walking closer to me.

“What do you mean?” I asked backing up into the wall.

“What do you think I mean?” Asked, Anthony, appearing right in front of me. He scanned me up and down. Anthony grabbed a strand of my hair and twirled it around his finger. “Anything you do will get reversed, but if you were to get hurt then that sticks. You get hurt here, you get hurt in real life. Meaning if you die...”

“I die in real life.” I said

“Exactly.” Said, Anthony, moving my hair from my neck.

“Please, don’t kill me. I understand your pain. I just saw your family murdered and I know why you are cruel. But killing me isn’t the answer. Your family wouldn’t want to see you like this.” I said as I hit a chord in him.

Anthony looked at me with teary eyes, but he pushed his feelings away. “You have no idea how I feel, but I won’t kill you. Causing you pain will bring you back to reality and I want you to tell my future self to stop being the bad guy. If he isn’t happy then eventually everyone around him won’t be either.”

“What are you going to do?” I asked

“The only thing that will get you out.” Said, Anthony, as he wrapped his arms around me. His mouth was against my neck soon after. Pain radiated throughout my body as everything began fading away. I was thrown back to reality, waking up in the same position I was in when I left.

I looked over at Anthony and Sam who hadn’t moved since I got sucked in. My hand went up to my neck and back into my line of vision covered in blood. Sam pushed Anthony off him as he caught me before I collapsed onto the grass.

Sam ripped part of his shirt off and began cleaning up my neck. He searched for any other wounds and looked at me with confusion. “What just happened? One minute you’re in a vision and the next a bite appears on your neck out of nowhere. What happened in there?”

“The stronger seers get the more they can do. While I was in there Anthony’s past self told me if I get hurt in someone’s head it happens for real. He bit me so I would be brought back to reality.” I said

“What did you see?” Asked Anthony

Sam tried to get him to leave, but I shooed him away. He helped me to stand so I was able to look directly at Anthony. “I know why you push people away. You lost your family and you turned Sam and Aria to replace them. You wanted your family back, but you know that isn’t possible. You can’t bring them back, Anthony. I watched them die in front of you and I understand your pain.”

“You don’t understand anything.” Yelled, Anthony, as he grabbed the front of my shirt. Sam moved closer to try and remove his hand, but I told him to stay put.

“You’re wrong, Anthony. I know exactly how it feels. I have lost a lot in my life and I know pain. You’re part of the reason I am so damaged. But you don’t have to be the bad guy. If you aren’t happy then eventually everyone around you won’t be either.” I said

“Who gave you that piece of advice?” Asked Anthony

“You did. I got taken to the moment after Sam “killed” you. He told me that he doesn’t want you to be the bad guy anymore. He wants you to be happy, even if you can’t believe it yourself.” I said

Anthony face softened and he didn’t know how to respond. He looked at me and then down at his feet. Anthony then let me go and was about to counter but before he could respond three figures appeared from the darkness of the yard.

The fog cleared to reveal Aria, Nick, and my mother. Anthony took a few steps back as the group stopped. My mother noticed the wound on my neck and turned her attention to Anthony. He looked at her with sorry as she held back her anger.

That’s when Nick decided to butt in, “If I had known Anthony was coming to visit you, I would have come along. I love myself a party, you have no idea. We could’ve shared a dance together, maybe even more.”

I looked at Nick with disgust at his flirty behavior while Sam just eyed him down. We both knew Nick wouldn’t try anything as my Mother was around. She had this hold over Aria, Nick, and Anthony that I couldn’t explain. Anthony and Aria were so much older than my mother and yet they let her boss them around. It was bizarre and outright creepy.

Mother gritted her teeth and exhaled. She was furious at Anthony and the look she gave him made Anthony cringe. I don’t know what kind of power she had, but it wasn’t pretty. Mother kept her calm and turned her attention to me, “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” I said

“That’s good to hear. When I found out Anthony came to the party I left right away. I wanted to make sure you were okay.” Said, Mom, trying to give me a hug. I politely declined and moved closer to Sam. She had a look of frustration on her face but it quickly faded.

“You didn’t have to come rescue me. I can handle myself and I had Sam.” I said squeezing Sam’s hand.

My mom looked down at our hands and smiled a fake smile. “I can see that. Well, I had to make sure. You are my daughter and I had to make sure you were okay. I’ve been hoping we could talk; alone.”

“I don’t really have anything I want to say to you. All I want is for you to leave me alone. You don’t have me fooled, Mom. I know you are playing a game and I will not play a part of it. Thanks, but no thanks.” I said as I could see the anger building behind her green eyes. “Sam, would you please take me home?”

“That’s no way to talk to your mother.” Said, Mom, in scary calm voice.

“You’re not my mother. Not anymore.” I said

Aria tried to come at me, but my mother stopped her. I put on a fake smile and pulled Sam back toward the party. We maneuvered through the crowd so we could get to the front. I said goodbye to my friends and Sam drove me home. The car ride was silent and that was completely fine. I didn’t know what to say anyway.

When we arrived in the driveway I told Sam to take the car back and meet me in my room. He agreed and I waved goodbye as he drove off. I slowly walked up to the house and thankfully had no one try to bother me. I made it to my room and found Sam sitting on the bed.

I walked around the bed and sat down beside him. He slid down to a lying position and I laid my head on his chest. Sam wrapped his arm around me and began rubbing my back. “Sam, without you I think I’d have gone insane by now.”

“I feel the same way. For the first time since I became a vampire I want to keep living. I have something to fight for and someone to love. I haven’t felt like this in a very long time.” Said Sam

“You are my hero, Sam.” I said

“I’ll always be there when you need me, but you will have to deal with your mother at some point. Ignoring her isn’t going to last forever. She has power and people with power will do crazy things to get what they want. Pissing her off might not be the best move.” Said Sam

“I know I’ll have to deal with her, but it’s not that easy. She lied to me about everything. My mom became a vampire and left her family to grief. Forgiving is not easy for me.” I said

“You don’t know why she did what she did. Your mom should’ve done things differently, but she had some reason for it. Hear her out and you might be surprised.” Said, Sam, squeezing my shoulder.

“Maybe, but for now I just want to lay here with you. Can we do that?” I asked looked up at him.

“Yeah, we can definitely do that.” Said, Sam, leaning down to give me a kiss as we cuddled closer. I had seen a lot of horror that night, but right now I felt peaceful. I just wanted to stay in Sam’s arms forever, but I knew it wouldn’t last. Nothing ever does.
