Under the Stars and the Ceiling

I stared what I presumed was Iago who was now close to me. He grabbed my hips and pulled me close. Taking a deep breath and seeming to relax. I did the same to him relishing in his scent. He smelled like freshly brewed coffee and a warm fireplace. Alright, that last part didn’t make to much sense but there was no other way to describe than that. I was then reminded that there were other people in the room when I heard a loud cough and turned to see everyone staring at me. Danny had his head tilted and I watched as his ears twitched for a second. That was the only warning I got before, instead of a panther, there stood a man.

“Congrats!” Danny whispered before suddenly shifting back into panther form. He laid back down and he placed his head in between his paws seem to fall asleep.

Yassie came over to me excited and try to pull me out of Iago’s arm into a hug which earned a growl from him but once he saw the glare on Yassie face he grumbled something about her being too nice to stare and be scary like she did. It was the first time I had heard his voice and it honestly made me want to ask him a whole bunch of random questions just so that I could hear his voice again. Not only that but I wanted to know everything about him. We had time for that but first I was pretty sure he was hungry and Yassie was also extremely excited for me it seemed. In fact, I should probably really pay attention to what she was saying.

“I remember when I found Ash. I was so excited to have my own Assassins just like all the other healers. Although he was an ass at first he got around once he realized that his bad attitude did not scare me. Iago doesn’t be a dick to Siren or I’ll cut yours off. Got me? Moving on what kind of dress do you think you would want for your wedding. How about your-”

This girl was talking a mile a minute and I had to cut her off. Especially because she had mentioned a wedding. I had just met this person, I was only twenty-one, way too young to get married, and I had never thought about being married. I was not the type of person that envisioned a dress and color and that type of thing. I wouldn’t even know where to start.

“Yassie. Yassie you gotta breathe. Take a deep breath and come back down here with me. We can have a chat later tonight. Okay” I turned to look at Amathea, “You too. You both come down to my room tonight”.

Amathea nodded and so did Yassie. I then turned my attention to Iago who I realized was now sitting down with a plate in front of him shoving mash potatoes in his mouth. I guess he really was hungry. I stared at him for a couple seconds too long because mid-bite he looked up at me and gave me a small smile. He went back to eating his food but not before pulling me into his lap. I let out a surprised gasp but find the position quite comfortable. I felt eyes boring into me and I looked to see that it was Ferrutius staring at me or more precisely at us. I gave him a quick smile and he gave me one in return. He then started off looking like he was deep in thought.

Once Iago was done eating and everything was clear we all sat around the table seems to take each other in. We were a complete team now. Although most of them knew each other or knew of each other. For some reason sitting with the team, our team, it made me feel so happy.

Finally, Ferrutius spoke out saying, “I don’t want to give the same speech I did yesterday. Starting today you are an official team. In three weeks you will go out on a mission as an official team. I expect you all to be ready by then and be working together like you have been a team all your lives”. As he spoke he had stood up and was now standing at the door.

“As of now, you are dismissed for the night. Head back to your rooms and I expect you guys to be training in the morning” he spoke with authority as he left the room. We said our goodbyes and everyone left the room until it was just me and Iago. We stared at each other and although the silence was not uncomfortable I felt the need to speak.

“Do you want to go one of the outside areas?” he asked looking down for a moment before looking back at me. He was nervous it seemed and I found it really cute. It made me giggle and nod my head at him. He took my hand and we walked out of the room as he guided me through the hallway. I enjoyed this a lot and it seemed to really sink into me that I have a mate. Someone that I would be spending the rest of my life with. That gave me pause for a moment. Our mates were picked by the Goddess and usually, it was shifters that had mates to help balance their animal counterparts. The Goddess put us together for a reason and I had to trust that we would work out no matter how nervous I might be a bit the situation. We finally stopped somewhere that I did not recognize. It was similar to the same glass doors that I went through before but the inside looked different. It looked like a rose garden and the top was glass so that you could see in the sky. It was beautiful from what I could see. The stars were shining brightly and the smell of the flowers was calming.

He took me to the middle and pulled out a blanket from one of the benches. This made me pause and want to growl out.

“You bring people here often?” I tried to ask without sounding upset.

“No. I just come here often. Not many people like this outdoor room because it is not very big and not as fun as the other ones. Most of the other ones have pools or parks” he said laying the blanket. He turned around to look at flashing me a smile before holding out his hand for me to grab. I moved and he pulled me down on the blanket with him and we laid down looking up at the stars. I was cuddled by his side but that didn’t really last long. I didn’t really like cuddling and I also wanted to ask him some questions.

“I want you to tell me something random and in return, I will tell you something about myself” I grinned at him.

“How about I tell you my powers and my favorite thing to eat?”

“I said anything random”.

“Alright, my name is Iago. I am a Dark Elemental and a Wolf Shifter and my favorite thing to eat currently is tacos”.

That made sense. His powers I mean. I could sense that he had powers and I figured that he was some type of shifter. It would also explain why he was a leader on most of his teams. He was most likely an alpha.

“Okay. My name is Siren. I grew up in a wolf pack and my father is the alpha. I have Goddess powers”.

“It is nice to meet you, Siren”.

“It is nice to meet you as well Iago”.

We stayed in the garden for most of the night and talked. I was quite a quiet person so the opposite of me. I wonder if that would annoy him quickly or if we would get used to it. We only talked about simple things night diving too deeply into our past. I knew a little about his past from what Yassie told me earlier. I don’t know how much he knew about me from besides what I had told him.

I wasn’t ready to tell him certain things yet which made sense we have just met. Mates or not I did not share openly all the time and he would not either and I was okay with that. It was late at night now and I knew we had to leave soon and go to bed.

“We should head back the girls are probably in my room waiting” I whispered to him.

He nodded his head at me and got up holding out his hand for me to get up as well. I grabbed his head and let him pull me up. I folded the blanket up for him and he put it away.

We began to walk back to my room holding hands and knowing me I had a silly little grin on my face. I know that some meetings don’t always start off so well but I think that we were doing well. Hopefully, I won’t be eating my words anytime soon. - Check for updates on chapters. You can also find it in my profile.
