“Sir, we’ve found her,” Aleks informed me, emotionless. He was always well-rehearsed with a stoic poker face and monogamous tone.
“Excellent,” my eyes lit up with excitement; we’d been searching for her for far too long. I swiveled to face him from the leather office chair behind my desk.
“Now how do you suggest we go about apprehending her... I would like to use as less force as possible?” The thought of my delicate little treasure being in harm’s way wrinkled my brow; she would have no awareness of what I am, or of this part of the world. This matter must be handled with utmost care.
Aleks pondered for a moment, his wrought iron hand resting on the tip of his chin. “It would be much easier to send some of our men to... acquire her; however, I understand your discretion at using force. Let me go over her files and see what the boys and I can come up with. I will meet you back here in an hour, tops.”
I nodded, trying to keep my expression neutral, “Alright, you’re dismissed.”
“Sir,” he partially bowed and exited the room, shutting the door behind him. I couldn’t help but smirk once I was alone... I’ve finally found her. The search has gone on for years; once her parents found out that she was destined to be mine, they fled the country with her in tow. Every time my men would come close to finding them, they would disappear without a trace, and we would have to start the hunt again from square one. I was starting to believe we would not find her.
My tensed muscles could finally begin to relax.
Oh, the things I will do to her sweet little body once she’s here... Ideas coursed through my mind, sending blood and adrenaline to places it should not dwell. Some of the men had managed to snap pictures of her, before reporting back to me. And let’s just say I am thoroughly pleased with whom the fates have chosen for me.
My hands tightened around the armrests of the brown leather chair, and my heart thudded rapidly as visions of her invaded my thoughts.
Wild, silk-spun blonde hair paired with mesmerizing green eyes. Pale, moon-kissed skin and soft rosy cheeks aside pink petal lips. She was nothing less than perfection itself. A delicate flower to be treasured and kept safe. The thought of her smooth curves against my rigid body sent waves of friction over skin; igniting a dangerous fire in the pit of my groin.
“Shit,” I thought inwardly.
The sound of leather tearing brought me back to reality, and I quickly removed my hands-turned-claws from the punctured armrests of the newly ruined chair.
“I’m going to have to work on that before she’s here... If I can do that to leather just imagine what could happen to her flesh with a small lapse of control.” Frowning in dismay at my actions, I turned around and lifted the landline phone, dialing my assistant’s number. It rang just once before she picked up.
“Good evening, Lord Bauldergruff,” Sanska chirped happily. She was one of the few people I truly trusted in this world, and had proved very useful as my assistant. “Hello, Sanska. Listen, I need you to do a few things for me this evening. I want you to prepare the guest bedroom closest to mine; take one of my cards and go shopping. Decorate it to suit a female’s tastes, and fill the wardrobes as well. Spare no expense.”
Without falter she replied, “Yes sir, I shall take care of it immediately.”
“Oh, and Sanska?”
“Buy me a new desk chair.”
To Ms. Jade Jenson,
Greetings, I hope this letter received you well.
Thanks to your college’s career program, which aids in finding newly graduated students suitable jobs, I have taken interest in you.
Your final portfolio pieces were posted to the program website, to which my staff directed me; and let me just say how impressed I and my entire team were with your work.
I believe your forward-thinking style of design will be a great asset to the current project we at Bauldergruff RE Industries have underway.
Our headquarters is located at 2001 Stonewall Dr., Helsinki, Finland. Should you be interested in pursuing a career with us, we will gladly pay for your travel and relocation expenses, as well as double the salary that any other company may have already offered you.
You can email your response to A.Bauldergruff@yahoo.com.
Hope to hear from you soon,
A. Bauldergruff, CEO of BREI.
I stared down at the letter with total disbelief. Double the salary!?! For someone fresh out of grad school?
Too good to be true.
Folding the letter and sticking it back inside the envelope, I reached for my laptop sitting adjacent to me on the glass topped coffee table, and quickly brought up Google.
Typing “Bauldergruff RE Industries, Helsinki” into the search bar and hitting go. Pages of websites linked with information relating to the company and CEO popped up.
“So, it’s legit,” I thought, still questioning the truth of the letter.
I clicked on some of the links, and read through several clientele’s reviews. Photos of the company’s work popped up as well.
They liked to use eco-friendly building materials and technologies, including solar panels, and recyclables which were turned into home decor. The projects directed by Mr. Bauldergruff were truly sensational. This was my dream job.
“Hell, this would be any designer’s dream job,” I thought aloud, nonchalantly bringing my coffee mug to my lips and sipping the warm liquid while scrolling over more information. I clicked on the link to their company website, which listed the same address mentioned in the letter.
Centered at the bottom of the page was a photo of the headquarters. It was massive. Built from chiseled stone; it looked like a take on a modern day castle.
The landscaping was gorgeous; loads of rose gardens surrounding the exterior of the building and scattered throughout the yard. Tall fir trees lined the driveway, leading to the front entrance.
“Should I go for it?”
I frowned, closed the laptop and sat it back in its original spot on the table. Standing and running a hand through my hair with uncertainty, I headed to the bathroom. A hot shower always helped sort my thoughts.
Stripping my clothes off and tossing them in the hamper, I stepped into the shower and pulled the knob; emitting warm water from the nozzle. Beads of soothing water cascaded from head to toe. Instant relief washed over me.
Why shouldn’t I go for it? Considering how things have been around here lately... I would be stupid not to take the opportunity. After the breakup with Lamar, things have just kept going in a downward spiral. We were together all throughout college... having met at a dorm party and becoming an item not too long after.
But, things between us were starting to fizzle out recently, and I knew it was then end when I caught him in bed with another woman.
“Fucking prick,” I grumbled aloud, reaching for the orange and vanilla scented shampoo, then scrubbing it viciously into my hair. After a thorough wash and rinse I shut the water off and grabbed the plush white towel; wrapping it around my figure.
Finished with my shower and feeling a bit better, I went to scour the cabinets for something to eat.
“God, I’m starving,” I mumbled, my belly growling in agreement.
“Oh, this is pathetic.”
Two packs of chicken flavored ramen and a half eaten bag of chips made for a pretty shit meal. If I eat one more pack of noodles I might just go ahead and die.
I stood for a moment, taking in the emptiness of the cabinets and my entire living situation at the moment. Rent was already past due, I had no real food, and thirty bucks left over from school loans (which would have to start being paid back in 3 months), to my name.
“Fuck it, what have I got to lose?” Slamming the cabinet doors closed, I walked over to my laptop to send Mr. Bauldergruff an acceptance email.
A few clicks and taps later, my response was sent.
“Looks like I'm going to Finland.”
