Chapter 22

Why did I ever think this was a good idea? The stares haven’t stopped since I walked in this morning, and the rumors were wild.

“I heard she ran off to marry this guy, but at the last minute his other wife came in and stopped the wedding.” A girl whispered two seats away from me. Really?

“Really? I was told she had a drug problem and went looking for more. That would explain her purple hair.” Her friend replied. Purple hair means you have a drug problem? They were bad at whispering, or maybe they wanted me to hear. I ignored them just as I had with the others. They can think what they want. The truth is far worse than whatever they came up with. Although drug problem was a little close. You had to be on some type of drug to think you’re hanging out with gods, right?

I was happy when class finally ended. I haven’t seen Jeremy all day and I was hoping to run into him in the hallway. Sydney was here and acting as my bodyguard. I don’t know exactly what all Erebus told her, but she has gotten way more protective of me. Glued to my side between classes glaring at anyone who dared look at me funny. She was more upset about the rumors than I was. The last time she heard one of the rumors she went up and gave that person a piece of her mind, and a slap to the face.

“Isabel hey.” I cringed as I heard a voice next to me. What does he want? To make fun of me like everyone else? Shouldn’t he be off sucking faces with Crystal? “I love the new look.” He continued.

“Can I help you Duff?” I turned frowning at him. He was looking good as always. Too bad he was ugly on the inside. What a heartless jerk.

“I just wanted to say hi.” Wanted to say hi? He could’ve said hi instead of standing me up on our date and cheating.

“Well now you have, so leave.” I was not in the mood for his presence, or any guy presence. Besides the rumors, guys have been throwing me lustful looks all day. Even now Duff is looking at me like I’m the last piece of meat on earth. I’m trying not to pay much attention to it, but it’s starting to make me uncomfortable. Must be something they drank?

“Why are you being like this? I thought maybe we could be friends. I miss you.” I scoffed at this. Was he on something? I could never be friends with someone that cheated on me.

“Really? Didn’t seem to miss me three days ago.” He scrunched his eyebrows up in confusion. “When you were making out with Crystal.”

“She means nothing to me.” He sighed. Yeah she only means enough to ditch your girlfriend to go have sex with her. I opened my mouth to dismiss him but was interrupted by someone else.

“And she means nothing to you.” A dark voice stated calmly behind me. After Thor so rudely refused to accompany me to school Thanatos decided he would send Erebus and Logan, his Penumbra. I haven’t seen Erebus since I drove us all here this morning. Sydney told me he had some classes with her and that we all have lunch together. Most of the girls have also been talking about the sexy new boy. It’s like they have their own fan clubs now. You were either team Erebus the sweet one or team Logan the dark moody one.

“You’re dating this tool now?” Duff asked me. Takes one to know one.

“That’s none of your business.” Logan glared down at him. Duff was pretty tall for a guy, but Logan literally being a shadow for a god means he was taller, and much more intimidating. I still didn’t understand the whole Penumbra thing and hopefully while Logan’s here he’ll explain it more. I had a flashback from when he and Logan first fought. We do not want a repeat of that.

“Just go away Duff, go find your whore.”

“She’s not my whore Isabel. I dumped her right after you left that day.” he was talking about the day Logan killed me, freezing everybody in the cafeteria. Dumped her? I guess they were actually together.

“I don’t know why.”

“We’re done with this conversation, it’s wasting my time.” Logan grabbed my arm.

“Can we talk later Isabel?” Duff called after us. This guy just doesn’t stop.

“No,” Logan answered for me. I let him drag me around the corner before I finally pulled my arm out of his hand. “Don’t start Isabel,” he turned to glare at me. What was his problem today?

“Have you been avoiding me?”

“What?” I stepped closer to him so no one around us could here.

“I’ve been wanting to talk to you about what happened that day.”

He sighed. “Nothing happened Isabel. Some guy tried to rob you, that’s it.”

“That’s not true! He had black eyes.” I knew he was lying, but why was he?

“And you have purple eyes, must be something in the water around here.”

“Stop lying! Was he a demon? Does Thanatos know?” I asked

“Why were you talking to him?” That question threw me off. I wasn’t expecting him to randomly change the subject.

“What?” I asked stupidly.

“Don’t play dumb Isabel.” He growled.

“I’m not playing dumb Logan.” He walked up to me.

“Thanatos gave me strict orders to keep him away from you. It doesn’t help my job when you’re throwing yourself at him.”

I was about to respond when I saw the back of Jeremy’s head pass at the end of the hall. “Hold that thought,” I took off after him. I ran until I ran into him, and I mean literally ran into him. I smacked into his back. “Jeremy!” He slowly turned around to face me and I flinched. I was not expecting the cold vacant look in his eyes.

“What?” his voice was anything but friendly. This is not the Jeremy I know.

“I haven’t seen you in a while.” I took a step closer to him, he took one back.

“Well now you’ve seen me.” And with that he turned and walked away. What was that? Should I chase after him, demand he explain his behavior?

“Aww trouble in paradise?” Logan’s mocking voice was right behind me.

“What did you do?” I turned glaring. Being mad helped the tears not fall. Why was he being so cold to me?

“Me? What makes you think I have anything to do with it?” he smiled innocently.

“Why can’t you both just leave me alone!” I yelled. There were still people in the hallway, but I didn’t care. The most they’d do is spread more rumors.

“Listen here you nagging bug,” he was in front of me before I could blink. He gripped the front of my shirt bringing me to him. “I had nothing to do with your little angel and neither did Thanatos, keep disrespecting him and I’ll make you wish you never stepped a foot on that bridge.” He growled lowly.

I stared at him unflinching. “Too late,”

“Logan calm down,” Erebus walked up behind him out of nowhere. A crowd had started to gather. I didn’t mind the small crowd before but now this is just embarrassing. Everybody seeing the moody new boy man handle me. As I stared at him, I couldn’t help but notice the slight flickering. From afar it wasn’t noticeable, but since he had me pulled so close to him, I definitely noticed. He was flickering back and forth from Logan to Thanatos. Was Thanatos watching right now? Could he see through his Penumbra? Wow this is just too creepy.

“Stay out of this Erebus,” he continued glaring into my eyes.

“Let me down Logan.” I glared right back.

“Why don’t you dig for a piece of that power I heard so much about and make me?” He smirked. I didn’t like the taunting look in his eyes. If Thanatos told him about my powers, then he knew I had no control over them.

As if his words triggered something within me, I felt myself become empowered. The slight buzz flowing through me caused an evil smirk to slip on my lips. “Release me,” my voice was as smooth as velvet. It wasn’t a request, it was a demand.

I watched as his body twitched, and he slowly started putting me down. When my feet were firmly placed on the ground, I ripped his hands off me. “I just made you,” turning on my heel I headed the other way. The crowd parting as I made my way through. He and Thanatos can shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.

I stalked angrily through the halls going to my locker. I should just ditch the rest of the day. I’m sick of everyone thinking I needed a babysitter, it was ridiculous. I sat on the floor in front of my locker bringing my knees up to my chest. Why was this happening to me? Why did I have to go through all these changes? People I never met wanting to kill me.

I groaned loudly, slamming my head back against the locker. I jumped when something landed in my lap. I picked up the piece of paper sighing. Great another death note, just what I needed.

I’m coming for you.

Unlike before the note didn’t fill me with fear. “Come for me then! What are you waiting for!” I yelled out into the hallway.

“Why are you talking to yourself?” I looked up as Sydney came and sat next to me.

“Shouldn’t you be in class?”

“Shouldn’t you?” Touché. “What’s that?” she pointed to the note in my hand. I gave it to her. “whose coming for you? what is this?”

I leaned back against the locker. “I don’t know, someone keeps leaving me threatening notes.”

She frowned. “And you didn’t think to tell anyone? Does Thanatos know about this?”

I snatched the note from her hand. “No, he doesn’t, and I plan to keep it that way.”

“Isabel this is serious. What if they’re from Hades?”

“If they were from Hades then that would mean he knows my location. Which I’m sure he doesn’t. Plus, I’ve been getting them before he knew about me.” That automatically canceled him out as a suspect.

“How long have you been getting them?”

“Since that day we went to the club.” It felt nice to talk about this with someone. It was a burden to keep such a heavy secret with everything that’s been going on. “You have to promise me you won’t tell Thanatos or Erebus.” I faced her to show how serious I was.

“Isabel, I don-“

“Promise me Sydney! If he knew about this, I’d never be able to leave the house.”

“Maybe that’s what’s best! Isabel there’s someone after you.”

“I know that.” I sighed. I wish I never told her. Now she’s going to run to Thanatos with the news.

“How about we make a deal? I’ll keep quiet only if you promise to tell him.”

I smiled at her. “You got yourself a deal.” We linked our pinkies together grinning.

“Now let’s get to class. This floor is hurting my butt bone.” I agreed with her, getting up from the floor.
