I knew Thanatos was going to get me back for embarrassing Logan at school today. But I just didn’t know it would be this soon, “I’m sorry! But he deserved it!” I screamed. The blood was rushing to my head.
“That’s your apology? he deserved it?” He growled at me. My eyes shifted from his angry face glaring at me, then back to the rushing of cars below me. I didn’t know how my new powers worked but I’m sure one fall onto this highway would kill me.
“Thanatos is looking for you.” Erebus caught up with me after school. I groaned.
“You know why. You embarrassed Logan today, he wasn’t just going to let you get away with that. You must’ve forgotten that Logan is a part of him, meaning you embarrassed him as well.” I embarrassed him? He’s the one that started it. I was still curious how Logan was a part of him. This whole Penumbra thing was confusing.
“I was only defending myself though! He’s a bully.” I threw my arms up. Erebus shook his head.
“It doesn’t matter, you should know how Thanatos is by now.” I silently agreed as we walked out of the school building. I knew Thanatos was mad, but he wouldn’t do anything extreme right?
Boy how wrong was I. Soon as Erebus and I took a step outside the school doors Thanatos grabbed me. “Well he was being a jer...” I screamed as he jerked my body up and down. This is torture! All I did was make Logan put me down! I didn’t deserve this, “Fine I’m sorry! Please let me go!”
“Let you go? You sure you want me to do that?” he smirked at me. My vision was starting to get fuzzy from the amount of blood rushing to my head. I was one second away from seeing black spots.
“Thanatos please,” I begged. I’d put my pride to the side for now. Before I have permanent brain damage.
“That’s more like it,” I let out a breath of relief, which was shortly lived as he dropped me. I screamed throwing my hands in front of my face as I prepared for impact. “Stop screaming brat.” I peeked one eye open realizing I wasn’t dead. I was standing above the highway next to Thanatos. Deja vu much?
“Take me home.” I crossed my shaking arms avoiding eye contact with him. I could feel tears threatening to spill. How dare he treat me like this? Over something so small? I could’ve died from a heart attack!
“Aww come on, we were just having fun.” A stupid grin crossed his face.
“Fun? I don’t think you know the meaning of the word fun.” he shrugged. I started walking in the direction I thought my house was, not wanting to be around this lunatic and his ‘fun’ time anymore.
“You’re going the wrong way,” He called after me.
“I don’t care I’ll hitch hike.”
“You’ll get yourself kidnapped,” he said. I spun around giving him my most fierce glare.
“You kidnapped me!” I yelled. He rolled his eyes at me. People were driving by in their cars throwing us curious glances. Why can’t people mind their own business?
“I didn’t kidnap you, I just brought you here without your permission.”
“That’s kidnap!” Was this psycho serious? He shrugged. Suddenly I got an idea. Why didn’t I think of this before? I pulled my phone out scrolling through my contacts. I’m surprised it didn’t fall out while I was being held over the highway. The power of wearing tight jeans.
“Hello?” he answered on the first ring.
“Thor? Can you pick me up?” Thanatos raised an eyebrow at me. I watched as he pulled his phone out too.
“Isabel? Where are you? Hold on I got another call,” I waited as he clicked over.
“Don’t even think about picking her up.” My eyes widened as I realized he called too. I hung up the phone and dialed Sydney. I knew for sure he didn’t have her number. I waited through several rings before finally giving up. I can’t believe she didn’t answer.
“What is wrong with you?” I demanded. He ignored me as he typed away on his phone. I crossed my arms glaring at him. After a few minutes he slipped his phone back in his pocket and started walking towards me. On instinct I started backing away, “What do you think you’re doing?” he had a sinister grin on his face that I didn’t like.
“What?” He raised his arms up in a surrender gesture. As if I’d fall for that.
I continued moving back. When out of nowhere my left foot caught on a piece of rock sticking out of the pavement. I groaned as I lost my footing, landing right on my butt. Thanatos lunged for me and I had nowhere to run. He landed on top of me grabbing hold of my arms as I screamed.
Seconds later I felt myself land on something soft. I knew it was my bed, because I could see my room and the people in it. “What a lovely sight,” Thor smirked from next to my bedpost. “I was wondering what you guys were doing, now I know. Were you calling me for a threesome?” Did I forget to mention Thanatos was still on top of me?
I felt my cheeks heat up. I struggled underneath Thanatos until he finally got off. A smug look on his face. “We weren’t doing anything! He tried to murder me.”
“What part of you?” Erebus laughed. I frowned not getting the joke. When I did my cheeks got even hotter if that were possible.
“You pervert!” Everyone started laughing, including Sydney. Oh, she can laugh with them but not answer her phone? That traitor. I huffed getting off the bed, making my way to the door to get away from them.
Thanatos grabbed my arm before I could walk out. “We have things to discuss.” I looked over at Sydney.
“You’re the worst friend ever.” I glared at her.
“He threatened to kill me if I answered my phone!” she pointed accusingly at Thanatos. I should’ve known. I turned my glare on Thanatos, but it didn’t faze him. He was clearly used to it. How did he get to her before me though?
The doorbell rang downstairs and Erebus went to answer it. Can’t even answer the door in my own home now? What if it was Marie? Where has she been anyways? I don’t remember her mentioning anything about a vacation.
“I invited someone else here,” Thanatos looked pointedly at me.
My attention turned to the bedroom door as it opened. I was shocked to see Jeremy walk in. What was he doing here? After blowing me off at school today he decides to show up at my house? Did he come to apologize? Was there nothing in his training about giving his assignments the cold shoulder after they died?
“You have some nerve coming here! Ignore me then come to my house!” I was furious.
He glared at me. Jeremy glared at me. “I was forced to come here.”
“You can leave!”
“That’s not your decision to make,” Thanatos rolled his eyes. My eyes snapped to his.
“Have you forgotten this is my house? I say who can come in! You can leave too!”
“I can just leave.” Jeremy started walking towards the door. Good.
“Isabel’s life is in danger and as her guardian you need to help her.”
“I don’t need him!” I knew I was starting to sound like a brat but he hurt my feelings earlier. When something or someone hurts my feelings I usually respond with anger.
“Shut up Isabel!” Thanatos yelled at me. His voice was booming and scary, instantly shutting me up.
“Her guardian? She doesn’t need me she has all of you. She can disappear without telling me so I’m sure she can handle herself just fine.” Jeremy crossed his arms.
“I took her, she was with me against her will.” I saw Jeremys glare disappear and a look of guilt cover his face. Is that why he was so upset? Because I left without telling him? He could’ve just asked!
“I’m sorry Izzy,” I ran over and launched myself into his opened arms.
“It’s ok, just don’t ever treat me like that again.”
“I promise,” he placed me back down on the floor. “where did you take her?” He asked Thanatos.
Jeremy’s face went blank, “Why the hell would you take her there? It wasn’t her time!” he yelled. Wasn’t my time? Was I not supposed to die? Did Thanatos kill me ahead of schedule?
“Actually, it was. You just didn’t see it. Guess you warriors aren’t as powerful as you think you are with your little gifts.” He smirked.
“I knew her death date and it wasn’t for another week or so. Meaning you took her early. No wonder I couldn’t find her when I felt her soul leave. It all makes sense now.” He thought out loud to himself. He was looking for me? So that’s why he thought I just disappeared on him. Also, I was supposed to die sometime next week? Wow my life was short.
“Isabel died days ago. She committed suicide which means she’s no longer your problem guardian wise. That extra week you’re going on about was because I gave her more time from her original date.”
“Do you know what you’ve done? You’ve upset the balance.”
“Am I to pretend that I care about this balance?” he asked.
“How would me dying upset the balance if I was going to die either way?” I asked him.
“It’s not just you dying, we also factor in how you die. From the information given to me you were supposed to die peacefully in your sleep, not commit suicide. This changes everything. A darker death means going down a dark path.” he looked troubled and stressed out. I guess dying in my sleep would have been more peaceful than getting pushed off a bridge, twice.
“What does it change? What do you mean a darker path?”
He sighed, “I can’t tell you.”
“There are rules Isabel, rules I must follow. Therefore, I can’t tell you.”
“Good, this conversation was getting boring anyways. We have more urgent matters to discuss which is the reason I invited you here. If you care about Isabel at all outside of being her guardian, then you’ll stay and listen.” Thanatos said.
